FCS holding Pajama Jamboree Dec. 11

Festival City Symphony (FCS) will continue its season with Holiday Frosty & Friends, a free "Pajama Jamboree" concert on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Bradley Pavilion of the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, 123 E. State Street entrance. FCS welcomes special guests, Vocal Arts Academy of Milwaukee's youth choirs, for a concert of holiday favorites and a sing-along. Those who wish may bring a nonperishable food donation for Milwaukee's Hunger Task Force. All "Pajama Jamboree" concerts have free admission. Hosted by Education Director Jayne Perkins, these popular programs welcome children and their parents or grandparents to attend in casual dress or pajamas. The audience is invited to bring a blanket and sit on the floor, up close to "meet" the orchestra. Conventional seating is also available. Pajama Jamborees are best suited for children in K4 through fifth grade. Milwaukee's Festival City Symphony, the oldest performing symphony orchestra in the area, showcases area professional musicians. Its mission is to extend the reach of classical music in the community with reasonable pricing and informative formats that embrace people of all ages. Skylight Music Theatre brings Les Misrables to the Cabot Stage

Skylight Music Theatre is presenting a new production of the Tony Award-winning musical Les Misrables now through Dec. 29 in the Cabot Theatre at the Broadway Theatre Center, 158 N. Broadway, Milwaukee. Les Misrables is one of the most popular musicals every written. Based on the classic novel, Les Misrables by Victor Hugo, this musical is an epic and uplifting story about the survival of the human spirit. The musical's score includes the wellknown songs "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," "Do You Hear the People Sing?," and many more. Since its Broadway debut in 1987, Les Misrables has been seen by 65 million people worldwide, in 45 countries and in 22 languages. It has won over 100 international awards including the coveted Best Musical Tony in 1987. Skylight Music Theatre has taken on the daunting task of re-imagining this massive musical for the intimate Cabot Theatre. Under the direction of Molly Rhode, Scenic and Lighting Designer Peter Dean Beck has created a unit set for this production that transforms and surprises. Rhode's highly theatrical staging will be an actordriven event that celebrates the power and craft of the artists. Artistic Director Viswa Subbaraman assisted Rhode in assembling one of the most talented casts to ever perform on the Skylight stage. Broadway and opera talents such as Luke Grooms (Valjean), Andrew Varela (Javert), Kevin Massey (Marius) and Eric Mahlum (Thenardier) will be under the direction of Robert Linder as the production's music director. Christmas Carol at Pabst Theater through Dec. 24

Charles Dickens classic masterpiece A Christmas Carol celebrates its 38th year at Milwaukee Repertory Theater at the historic Pabst Theater. The playadapted by Joseph Hanreddy and Edward Morgan and directed by Aaron Posnerwill run through Dec. 24. Music Under Glass series continues

The Milwaukee County Parks has announced the concert schedule for Music Under Glass (MUG), the concert series at the Mitchell Park Domes, located at 524 S. Layton Blvd. Live performances and computer light shows will fill The Domes every Thursday night, Nov. 7April 3 (including Thanksgiving). "Music Under Glass celebrates area talent and brings music and culture to our residents," said Milwaukee County Executive, Chris Abele. "This is an amazing weekly event that transforms The Domes into a fall and winter 'getaway.'" The series opens with the WAMIaward-winning Tweed Funk and continues with a variety of musical formats. Concerts run from 6:30-9:30 p.m., with light shows at the break and following the performance. New this year is an area in the lobby with information tables staffed by community non-profit groups. Each week, a new group will be present to explain their mission and how the public can get involved. In addition to taking in great performances, seeing spectacular light shows, and exploring 'Milwaukee's Living Landmark,' the public can become aware of all the great opportunities the non-profits offer," said John Dargle, Interim Parks Director. "Concert-goers will be introduced to a variety of organizations and will learn how their involvement can make our community a better place." Music Under Glass is fully funded through generous partnerships with the Milwaukee County Parks Department. Funding partners include WaterStone Bank, VMP, Blue Moon Brewing Company, and Friends of The Domes. Funding partners will also have information booths in the lobby, where individuals can learn more about their services and products. Historic Milwaukee, Inc. releases Preservation Contractor Directory

Historic Milwaukee, Inc. has recently published a preservation contractor directory. The non-profit educational and advocacy group created the directory as a resource for owners of historic homes and commercial buildings in the Milwaukee area. Though many people are attracted to older buildings, not all realize the work required for their upkeep and maintenance. This is where Historic Milwaukee's contractor directory can be useful. Much of the work required for a quality restoration can be fairly specialized. As such, some contractors may not know the proper techniques for working with historic materials or styles. By providing names of contractors and craftspeople that have experience working on preservation projects, the directory will be a starting point for owners of historic buildings. "This directory is a very exciting resource for Milwaukeeans who are looking to preserve and restore their historic homes or buildings," said Paul Jakubovich, who works for the city's Historic Preservation Office. The directory is made up of 103 contractors divided into 33 different categories based upon the services they provide. Those 33 categories cover a wide range of services including everything from roofing to custom woodworking to canvas ceiling repair. Most of the contractors listed are locally-based within the Milwaukee area. Some of the more highly-specialized contractors, though, do come from other parts of the Wisconsin or neighboring states. Historic Milwaukee will be regularly updating the contractor directory and welcomes any suggestions to help expand and improve this Milwaukee preservation resource. Add a little holiday sparkle to your landscape for you and your guests to enjoy. Holiday shapes made of energy rich birdseed and suet give the trees a holiday flare, while providing important food for birds to enjoy. Hang a few colorful and unique birdhouses in your backyard. They provide color and whimsy to the winter garden and will be ready for your feathered friends to move in this spring. Include a gingerbread house for the birds. Hang decorative birdseed houses from a shepherds crook or tree branch. Be sure to place it in an area where you and the birds can enjoy the decorative treat. Look for a sheltered, but open area where the birds can watch for predators while enjoying their winter feast. Move your holiday tree outdoors. Place your cut tree in a snow bank, vacant spot in the garden or make it part of your bird feeding station. The tree provides some extra greenery in the often drab winter landscape as well as shelter for the visiting birds. Then add a few of those birdseed ornaments for added food and winter decoration. Today's column is about oral cancer. One of our wonderful patients was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer and is undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation and we send our prayers for a speedy and full recovery! It is important to remind our readership about one of the many important reasons to see their dentist regularly. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation there will be 42,000 Americans that receive a diagnosis of oral or pharyngeal cancer this year and this will result in 8000 deaths. Oral cancer is a group of cancers that involve the head and neck and are found to be squamous cell carcinoma in 90% of cases. Squamous cell carcinomas have a much greater chance of spreading (or metastasizing) in comparison to basal cell carcinomas. The lesion is often asymptomatic which makes oral cancer screenings imperative. It most commonly appears as a reddish skin plaque or ulcer that grows slowly. A cancer cell is one that doesn't turn off and keeps multiplying as a result of a genetic mutation to genes. These cells cannot repair themselves. Where can oral cancer appear in my mouth? Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue. It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gums , the roof of one's mouth, or the lips. They may arise from many types of tissue in the mouth including salivary glands and lymph tissue. What should I look for? Keep your eye out for a skin lesion, lump, or ulcer that does not go away for around 2 weeks. This may be a small lesion on the tongue, lip, or other mouth areas. It is usually pale colored, but potentially could be dark or discolored. An early warning sign may be a white patch called a "leukoplakia" or a red patch known as an "erythroplakia" on the soft tissues of the mouth. These lesions are usually painless initially, however, it may develop a burning sensation or pain when the tumor is advanced. Other symptoms to look for are tongue problems, hard time swallowing, and mouth sores. Pain may be a late symptom but most often oral cancers are painless. How can a dentist tell if a lesion is cancerous or not? A dentist can identify a potentially cancerous lesion. However, a biopsy is the only way to know for sure. Benign and malignant lesions can look identical to the eye. A noninvasive brush biopsy can be performed to rule out the presence of cancerous cells. The only definitive method for determining if cancerous or precancerous cells are present is through biopsy. The cells will then undergo microscopic evaluation to determine if they are indeed cancerous. What will happen if a lesion in my mouth is determined to be cancerous? Often times, all that is necessary is for a small sugical

incision to be made to remove the lesion from the area in question. Radiation with or without chemotherapy can also be used in conjunction depending on the severity, stage, and size of the lesion. What puts you at a higher risk for developing cancer? People that are over 50 that drink heavily and smoke are at higher risk for oral cancer. Other risk factors are people that have been diagnosed with HPV or Human Papilloma Virus; which is a sexually transmitted disease which Michael Douglas recently associated with his throat cancer. Patients with poor diets or having had a higher exposure to radiation may also be at higher risk. We hope you will go to your dentist or come to us for your complimentary oral cancer screening.
