What is the Patriot Act

According to Wikipedia page, the Patriot Act was a series of laws or and act of Congress signed by President George W. Bush(par. 1). It was designed for law enforcement to become better equipped in handling terrorism. There are many controversial topics and issues through out the law such as wire tapping and surveillance (par. 2).

Those for it
The Department of justice listed four significant

aspects of the Patriot Act. It allows investigators to use tools already available to investigate organized crime and drug trafficking(par. 1), The Patriot Act facilitates information sharing and cooperation between government agencies so that they may better connect the dots(Par. 6), The Patriot Act updated the law to reflect new technology and new threats(par. 8), and The Patriot Act increased the penalties for those who commit terrorist crimes(par. 11)

Criticisms
Ron Paul Senator of Texas claims in his 2005 brief article

Reconsidering the the Patriot Act waters down the fourth amendment by federal governments ability to use wiretaps with out judicial oversight(par. 3). He also thinks that politicians and bureaucrats will always seek to expand their power(par. 4).

History/Leading events
The history behind the Patriot Act is quite tragic. A

series of terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001 President George W. Bush said in his post 9/11 speech thousands of lives were ended by evil despicable acts of terror (Bush, 2001). The pictures of air planes flying into buildings, fires burning, and huge buildings collapsing have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness, and unyielding anger (Bush, 2001).

Personal analysis
Although the Patriot Act is very helpful to law

enforcement agencies and counter terror, I can not condone something that violates the any of the first ten amendments or any other American civil liberties. There is no clear cut definition of a terrorist, so that means years later criticizing the government could lead to arrest with out trial. I believe that security should never surpass liberty.
