Armys Work Horse In OIF

Bottom Line: Aircraft is workhorse of OIF and OEF
280 Aircraft in Theater as of 5 Feb 07 Hours flown - 3X greater than peace time Harsh environment (sand/dust, FOD, heat, wind)

Combat Operations
17 accidental & combat losses in Theater since initiation of operations Issues - lack of situational awareness, power, survivability

As of 15 APRIL 2007 Fleet Cumulative Totals: 1,481,716 Hours Army Theater Cumulative Totals: 461,076 Hours MC: 87% OPTEMPO: 42.9 Army Theater Current Info: 214 of 223 ACFT reported 11,724 hours MC: 88% OPTEMPO: 54.7

Fleet is old (bulk of fleet is older than soldiers flying in them!)

Army Acquisition Objective (AAO) for UH60A-to-A RECAP aircraft: 193 Total UH-60A Inductions, to date: 95 of 193 Fully-Funded to RECAP 20 aircraft in FY2007 Adds 10 yrs of service life to the airframe; 20% reduction in maintenance

RESET
40% of Aircraft in Theater have been RESET at least once 892 aircraft completed to date at AVG Cost of $0.97M 561 a/c RESET once, 164 a/c twice, and 1 a/c three times A/C returning from OIF are to be RESET within 24 months

No Other Replacement Strategy exists

Current OPTEMPO about 3X more than Peacetime

ATEC Assessment
The UH-60M is Effective, Suitable, and Survivable:
All KPPs Met:
External lift: 4,500 lb, 135 km range NET Ready: JITC Certification (assessment of MYVII), IA Accreditation, demonstration of network connectivity in IOT. Survivability KPPs: CMWS integrated; meets fuel cell and crew protection requirements.

ORD reliability thresholds: MTBMA, MTBEMA and MTBMAF exceed requirement All mission types successful during three separate operationally realistic and tactically challenging OT events. Observations: Improved crew performance Digital map for navigation reduces workload Steeper learning curve in cockpit but yields big dividends.

ATEC Assessment
Recommended Improvements

Monitor and ensure AN/ARC-231 Encryption load devices receive Upgraded software to enable easier loading of radios. Enable warm reboot of individual radios and processors and improve overall reliability of radios and systems.

Improve ergonomics of crew chief seats and redesign harness system to improve ease of ingress and egress of crews.
Improve NVG lighting to include Red navigation light and IR searchlight. Improve Flight Management System to include more waypoints, routes, Flight plans and provide a one-button target store.
