I. Course Description:

Calculus A is a beginning calculus course for those students who have completed Pre-Calculus. This course is an in-depth study of elementary functions, limits, and differential calculus. Some topics of integration are also introduced. This course is required for Advanced Placement AP! Calculus A" and AP Calculus "C. primary aims of the course are to help students develop new problem solving and critical reasoning s#ills and to prepare them for further study in mathematics, the physical sciences, or engineering. "y the end of the course, students should acquire s#ills needed to compute limits by graphical, numerical, and analytical methods$ mechanically calculate derivatives of algebraic and trigonometric functions and combinations of functions$ use derivatives to s#etch graphs and solve applied problems$ and evaluate definite and indefinite integrals. %n addition to the specific s#ill-oriented ob&ectives above, students should

II. Course Objectives: This course provides an introduction to differential and integral calculus. The

have a better overall conceptual understanding of functions and their graphical, numerical, analytical, and verbal representations$ understand derivatives as rates of change$ understand definite integrals as accumulations of a rate of change and as 'iemann sums$ understand the relationship between derivatives and integrals$ understand the difference between definite and indefinite integrals$ have improved s#ills at problem solving and critical thin#ing( at dissecting a comple) problem, determining steps in its solution, finding the solution, and testing whether it is reasonable$ and be able to provide clear written e)planations of the ideas behind #ey concepts from the course.

Students should also gain an increased appreciation of mathematics as part of the language of science and as a study in itself. III. Classroom Expectations:
The academic misconduct policy of the school will be followed in this course. The attendance policy of the school will be followed in this course. All requests for accommodations, for this course or any school event, are welcomed from students and parents. Any student who receives failing grades during this course is urged to discuss this with the teacher.

IV. Laptop Policies:

*. +nder no circumstances are student laptops to be wired to the networ# or have print capabilities. ,. -o discs, flash drives, &ump drives, or other +S" devices will be allowed. .. -either the teacher, nor the school, is responsible for bro#en, stolen, or lost laptops. /. 0aptops will be used at the individual discretion of the teacher. 1-2 e)ams will be given during each 3-wee#s grading period. The e)am grades will account for 456 of the 3-wee#s grade, with the remaining ,56 being determined by qui78assignment grades. The grading scale is as follows( A 35*55!$ " 45-43!$ C 95-93!$ : 21-23!$ and ; below 21!. <a#e sure your absences are e)cused= >or# can be made up and graded for e)cused absences only. ?ach grade ta#en on a day with an une)cused absence will be recorded as a 7ero. +nless otherwise notified, ma#e-up tests for e)cused absences will be given on Tuesday mornings at 9(55 a.m. in the designated math testing room. Calculus of a Single @ariable, 9th edition. 'oland 0arson, 'obert Aostetler, and "ruce ?dwards, Aoughton <ifflin Company. Students are encouraged to bring graphing calculators to each class. Several T%4/B graphing calculators are provided for in-class use for those students not owning graphing calculators. Since the calculus AP e)ams now require graphing calculators for some questions, this technology has been e)tensively incorporated into the curriculum. %n-class tests will not require the use of a graphing calculator$ however, students will often be allowed to use graphing calculators on certain parts of the e)ams. The instructor will be using a T%-4.84/ graphing calculator and presentation software, and therefore will provide assistance with the operation of T%-4.84/ calculators. %f a student chooses to use a calculator other than the T%-4.84/, he8she is responsible for learning to operate that machine. %f you purchase a T% graphing calculator, please donate the proof of purchase to the school. ;or every .5 that we collect, T% will donate a calculator=
