What is a portfolio? A portfolio is a meaningful collection of selected artifacts or documents (Reynolds, Rice 1). What is a writing portfolio? A writing portfolio consists of artifacts, pieces, or entries that demonstrate a writers thinking and learning processes or that showcase a writers best work. Collected over time and across interests, a writing portfolio displays a writers talent and effort, and his or her ability to make thoughtful choices about content and presentation (Reynolds, Rice 1). How is this relevant to my life? A portfolio is the best way to illustrate your skills. Today, portfolios are highly appealing to employers and graduate program. For some college programs, you will be required to submit a portfolio to a panel of people who will use it to assess the program. You may have to submit a portfolio of your work before being accepted into a Masters or PhD program. With online technology, electronic portfolios can easily be attached to a CV or resume for potential employers to view with ease. Your portfolio proves that not only you know the material, but provides others with samples of what you could possibly bring to the table. Portfolios are great for opening doors but the most important audience for your portfolio is you. Keeping a portfolio will help you pay attention to both the processes and products of writing. It also will help you track the evolution of each writing project and your development as a writer (Reynolds, Rice 1). What will I need to know to complete this assignment? Each of the project question reflections from your three major projects. Your seven process journals. Each of your three major writing projects including 1st,2nd, and final drafts. The difference between revision and editing. How to construct an argumentative essay. The assigned readings you will receive on portfolios for the next few weeks Revisit all of the writing (in-class, online, and possibly other classes) that you have done this semester. Have a thorough understanding of the WPA Outcomes. Find examples of the skills and outcomes in your own writing. Use examples and explanations to show what you have learned in Composition I.
