Annotated Bibliography The focus for this final exam research paper is infidelity.

This is a broad topic in the sexual community however; I will break it down sub sequentially. My main area of focus will be infidelity among heterosexual couples from a cross cultural perspective. Since infidelity is common among most cultures I have decided to pick a few different cultures and expand on the topic appropriately. Within the focus of infidelity I will also expand on views of monogamy and how monogamy affects extramarital affairs as well as how it can influence these affairs in context. Some of the cultures that I will focus on will be the American culture with in the United States, Italian culture also with in the United States, cultures of India and a few others that I have yet to make my final decision on. My sources ranges of dates are from 1970 to 2011 giving me a nice range of years of sexual interpretation and resources to work from. My organizing principle for this paper will be to give specific definitions of monogamy and infidelity. I will then move on to the key roles specific cultures play on infidelity and the results or even repercussions infidelity can cause. Moving forward I will then hone in on the specific cultures that I chose talking about extramarital affairs and what can cause them to occur. This is not a definite organization but it is the general idea for how the paper will progress. I will omit information about homosexual couples and infidelity among this group. I want to keep the focus solely on heterosexual couples and infidelity among that group of people. In conclusion I believe that I will discover a variety of information about how infidelity occurs and even conclusions as to why it occurs in certain cultures and not in others. I also conclude that most of the sources added to this bibliography will be included in my paper in some way due to the fact that they contain a great deal of valuable information for this research paper. Duncombe, Jean ed., Harrison, Kaeren ed., Allan, Graham ed., Marsden, Dennis ed. 2004 The State of Affairs Explorations in Infidelity and Commitment. Mahwah: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc. This book is a representation of a group of scholars trying to decipher the popular culture topics of affairs and infidelity. Topics such as communication between couples, jealously, passion, gossip, betrayal and lies are also touched on. Case studies are used to study affairs in order for the reader to understand the information presented. Since this book was published in 2004 it will provide me with up to date valuable information about infidelity today as well as other topics that play along with causing infidelity. I plan to use this source as a solid base to write my paper on; however, the editors of the book are not anthropologists so this is not an anthropological source. Eigen, Michael. 2006 Lust. Middletown: Wesleyan University Press. This source is a book that is written by an author that pushes the form of psychoanalytic discourse in many of his publications. This book focuses on lust and how it plays a key role in reproduction and sex in society. Lust is also looked at in a manner of being a sin and being that infidelity is also looked at in some ways in the same light I thought this source might be valuable

to use in my paper. I am still unsure if I will use this source but it has a possibility to be referenced. Edwards, John N ed. 1972 Sex and Society. Chicago: Markham Publishing Company. Sex and society is a book written about sex not only in America but in other countries as well. It provides a cross cultural prospective on sex and sex related issues such as sex norms, sexual codes, marital sexual and extra martial sex. Even though this book was written in 1972, I believe that some of the information in this text will help me to form the current position on extra martial sex today. This is not an anthropological source and I plan on using this source for a decent amount of background information. Overall though this source will provide me with some knowledge on how infidelity was seen during the 1970s society. Golden Holtz, Gale. 2009 In the Grip of Desire. New York: Routledge. This book is about a therapists work with sexual desires. There are many topics addressed in this text that can help with this paper. The author identifies what the legal definition of intercourse is and how it is looked at in the modern world. I believe that this source will benefit my paper being that it is relatively recent and provides real information from studies on actual people. I might use this source, I am unsure yet only because I need to figure out where all of this valuable information will fit in well with my topic. This is a source that is definitely pending approval for the paper. Kapur, Promilla. 1970 Love, Marriage and Sex. London: Vikas Publishing House. This source is a book written by a social scientist that focuses on the life and attitudes of women in India. This specific book however focuses on how marriage and similar topics including adultery and infidelity are viewed in India. This book will give me a good cross cultural comparison of how infidelity is seen in other cultures. I am still unsure if I plan on using this source, however I may use it for the sole purpose of examining another cultures perspectives. Wolfe, Linda. 1975 Playing Around Women and Extramarital Sex. New York: William Marrow and Company, Inc. The author Linda Wolfe has created a text that definitely hones in on what extra martial sex and infidelity really is to the core. This text completely focuses in on extra martial sex and the different kinds of affairs that occur during a monogamous relationship. Overall this is a good text

to use for a variety of information but the fact that it was published in 1975 is definitely a downfall. I will most likely use this text for whatever information is relevant to the current sexual times. Reinisch, June M. and Beasley, Ruth. 1990 The Kinsey Institute New Report on Sex: What You Must Know To Be Sexually Literate. New York: St. Martins Press. The Kinsey Institute is an organization that Americans call very frequently about information on sex. They compiled this book to address some of the topics about sex and sexuality that plague Americans. It is very informational being that it ranges from topics about the female orgasm to extramarital affairs and even to sexual transmitted diseases. This is a very well written book being that the general public will have an easy time understanding it. I would consider this an anthropological source though because it is written from an anthropological based view. I will use this source as a basis for background information and also for information about the American culture. Being that it was published in 1990 though may be a drawback being that there is probably more updated information about sex out there. Mark, Kristen., Janssen, Erik., and Mihausen, Robin. 2011 Infidelity in Heterosexual Couples: Demographic, Interpersonal, and PersonalityRelated Predictors of Extra dyadic Sex. Archives of Sexual Behavior Vol. 40 Issue 5. This source is an article from the Archives of Sexual behavior. It is a study the importance of demographic, interpersonal, and personality factors in determining infidelity in heterosexual couples. It shows the different patterns that came up with men and women. I feel that this study will be a good resource for my paper being that it will provide some statistical evidence for infidelity between heterosexual couples in the United States. It will also add to the points of difference of infidelity between men and women. Fisher, Helen. 1992 Anatomy of Love A Natural History of Mating, Marriage and Why We Stray. New York: The Random House Publishing Group. This text is written by anthropologist Helen Fisher and is an in depth discussion describing for the general public topics about sex, monogamy and human relationships. It is a very informative text that is culturally relevant. I plan on using this source for my paper for the information that Fisher uses to describe what monogamy is, how it is looked at cross culturally and as it says in her title why we stray?. I believe this book will be a great asset for research to my paper.
