different. David Calhoun, 22, a kind and polite young
man who works with mentally and physically disabled
children, was facing disease and possible early death
before he got real with himself and decided to take
a stand against obesity and poor health habits. He'd
dieted down before during high school when he
was considered morbidly obese, but never had the
knowledge to maintain that weight loss.
Then David found Max Muscle, a personal trainer
who cared and a new strength in the form of his
newlywed wife. He decided it was time to stop giving
in to the twisted game of unhealthy living and make
a change for good. As a result, David became Max
Muscle's latest MaxForm Life Challenge Champion. You

I struggled with obesity

MY PASSION
Over the years I have struggled with my weight
to an extreme extent. When I was younger, I
was 5-foot-5, 248 lbs. and incredibly depressed
with myself for having so many issues with
eating habits and trying everything I could to
try to lose weight.
My frst encounter with nutrition
supplements was actually through the Max
Muscle store in La Mirada, Calif. in 2009. I was
amazed at how knowledgeable the staf was and
knew I needed to change my ways right there
and then.
Since then I've lost more than 107 lbs.
(down to about 140 at 5-foot-7). As I started to
build more muscle, I worked at 24 Hour Fitness
and also at GNC and Vitamin World to get my
foot into the door in the supplement industry.
Over time, I not only learned how to work
out but also how to eat right. Working out got
me great results but not what I wanted. Later
on, I learned how important dieting is for an
optimal physique and started incorporating
good nutrition with amazing results!
I switched my career feld entirely with so
many compliments and questions from people
trying to do and live the dream I have been able
to thanks to the Max Muscle staf. In return,
the only thing I could see myself doing is what
I love and know best, and that's being a part of
the Max Muscle team!
I saw an opening for a Max Muscle store in
Oregon online, which was over a 14-hour drive
from my home in La Habra, Calif. Te minute
I was able to score an interview, I did not
hesitate, as I am so passionate about this career
and lifestyle. I just knew it was for me.
So, I had my fance notify our families, we
packed our bags and moved over the weekend
to start our lives more than 900 miles away

My name is Christina Williams and I am a
mother, full-time business owner and a hard core
competitive tness enthusiast. My entire life I have
spent countless hours each week working out
with trainers, tness classes, college sports and
although I looked good in clothes, if you had
seen me in a bathing suit, you wouldnt have
thought I had ever stepped foot inside of a gym.
It wasnt until I was introduced to Kenny
Tali, one of bodybuilding's most respected
coaches, that my life all changed. He welcomed

TAKING FIRST PLACE
Ive always enjoyed working out and playing
sports. Over time I let myself get out of control
with the beer drinking and taco trucks. It saddens
my heart that I was a shell of my young athletic
self. I decided right then and there I was going to
change. That was a little less than a year ago.
I started to hit the cardio and core hard while
weight lifting and dieting. I used supplements like
Pro BCAA and Max Glutamine to help with muscle
recovery and to prevent muscle loss. In three
months I went from 200 pounds to 165
pounds. I felt better physically and had more
energy. Next I decided to compete in Physique
competitions. I added protein shakes and pre-
workout supplements to my diet. I competed in a
natural bodybuilding organization, entering three

and kept it natural. I went from 160 to 175 pounds
with less than 5 percent body fat in four months. I
took 1st place in physique 35 and over B class, 1st
place in open B class and overall winner in 35 and
over at the NPC Governors Cup. I couldnt have

I have been a tness nut since a
kid even with asthma I wouldnt
let that deter me. I was inspired
at a young age by Bruce Lee's
and Arnold Schwarzenegger's
aesthetics and drive and my uncle
Jerome Picot, who also stayed in
great shape with a mixed martial
arts background.
Ive been a personal trainer for
8 years and also a mixed martial
artist in Tae Kwon Do, Judo and
Jiu Jitsu for 9 years. Two years ago
I was introduced to Coach Kenny

Our bodies are truly amazing.
Each day we produce hair,
skin, muscle and bone. We also
constantly replenish and enrich our
blood with oxygen and nutrients
that literally keep us alive by the
minute!
To do all of these complex
functions, we must supply our
bodies with the proper nutrients.
Vitamins, minerals, protein and
other nutrients play vital roles in
this process.
Lets focus on vitamins today,
since many of our readers have
a very basic understanding of
vitamins. Vitamins are amazing
nutrients that perform hundreds
of roles in the body. One of the
most important roles they play is
that of helping our bodies repair
themselves. It can get a little
complicated trying to understand
each and every vitamin and how
it helps our bodies function. The
following information is a brief
summary to help you gather a basic
understanding of vitamins.
Vitamins are commonly referred
to as micronutrients. This is because
you only need very small amounts
of them as compared to other
nutrients such as proteins and
carbohydrates. Vitamins help us
avoid illnesses such as scurvy from
the lack of vitamin C. Folic acid has

the womb.
There are two types of vitamins:
fat soluble and water soluble. Water
soluble include all the B vitamins as
well as C as shown below:

Folic acid (folate, vitamin B9)
Niacin (vitamin B3)
Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5)
Ribohavin (vitamin B2)
Thiamin (vitamin B1)

Although water-soluble vitamins
perform many tasks within the body,
one of the most important is helping to
free the energy found in the food you
eat. Water-soluble vitamins help you
produce energy. Thiamin, ribohavin,
niacin, pantothenic acid and biotin play
a role in energy production. Vitamins
B6, B12 and folic acid metabolize
amino acids and help cells multiply.
Vitamins A, D, E, and K comprise
the fat-soluble vitamins. Fatty foods
and oils contain many of the four
fat-soluble vitamins. These vitamins
are then stored within the liver and
fat cells in your body. You can think
of these vitamins as time-released
micronutrients because they are slowly
metabolized from your liver and fat
cells.
Vitamins allow your body to grow
and develop. They also play important
roles in bodily functions such as
metabolism, immunity and digestion.
There are 13 essential vitamins,
including vitamins A, C, D, E, and K
and B vitamins, such as ribohavin and
folate. According to the U.S. National
Library of Medicine, the best way to
meet your vitamin needs is to eat a
balanced diet containing a variety of

Most of us know that ber is an
important part of the diet. Dietary
ber helps to keep the digestive system
healthy, and lowers the risk of heart
disease and obesity. But just how much
ber do we need? And more importantly,
are we getting enough? A new study published in The American Journal of Medicine
says that most of us arent getting enough ber for heart health.
The surveillance study, which looked at medical data from 23,168 people enrolled in
the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) over a 10-year period
of time, found that the average ber intake was about 16 grams per day. According to
the Institute of Medicine, men between the ages of 19 and 50 need 38 grams of ber
daily, while women of the same age need 25 grams each day. The study also found
that those who had the lowest intake of ber had the highest prevalence of metabolic
syndrome, cardiovascular inammation and obesity all risk factors for heart disease.
How to increase your ber intake? A plant-based diet is a good start. Consuming
plant foods like fruits and vegetables, beans and peas, whole grains and nuts,
and paying attention to the grams of ber in each serving will help you reach the
recommended goal. Some specic ber counts: one cup of oatmeal has 4 grams of ber,
a cup of raspberries 8 grams, and one cup of lentils a walloping 15!

But a new study that was
funded by the National Institute
of Neurological Disorders and
Stroke (part of the National
Institutes of Health), suggests
that a good nights rest may clear

The study, which was
performed on mice, showed
that sleep changes the cellular
structure of the brain, opening
the space between brain cells
and allowing a plumbing system
called the glymphatic system to

While the results havent
yet been replicated in human
studies, they point to another
possible function of sleep
cleaning up the brain.
While not everyone who gets migraine headaches experiences
depression, new research from the University of Toronto found
that the prevalence of depression among migraine sufferers is
approximately twice as high as for those without depression.
What is more, women under age 30 with migraines had
six times the risk for depression in comparison to
women migraine sufferers ages 65 and older.
While other factors entered the picture (such
as being unmarried, at a lower income level
or with activity limitations), the link between
migraines and depression is clear. As for
why its a stronger link among young
people: the study authors suggest
that those under 30 may not yet
have found adequate treatment for
their condition or have developed
coping skills to minimize pain.
The importance of the study,
according to the researchers,
is that it draws attention to the
need for routine screening and
targeted interventions among
young individuals who suffer from
migraines.

If you dont get a good enough look,
you may even call your partner or your
children, just to assure yourself that
theyre okay.
Sound familiar? Worry is a universal
emotion. We worry about work, our
health, our children, the bills, the state
of world affairs. And worrying can
even be productive in many instances,
because it spurs us into action. If
youre worried about a project due
at work, for example, youre more
likely to take it seriously and meet the
deadline rather than procrastinate.
But if youre constantly worrying
about worse case scenarios or what-
ifs, and you cant seem to distract
yourself from your worries, you may
actually have an anxiety condition,
said Michelle P. Maidenberg, Ph.D.,
MPH, a psychotherapist and adjunct
professor at New York University and
Baruch College. When the anxiety

PERSONALITY
While mental health professionals believe that there are a combination of
genetic and environmental factors that predispose a person to an anxiety
condition, there does seem to be a typical anxious personality, said Carolyn
Daitch, Ph.D., Director of the Center for the Treatment of Anxiety Disorders in
Farmington Hills, Michigan, and author of numerous books and CDs on anxiety
disorder. According to Dr. Daitch, three personality characteristics those with
anxiety usually have are:
Overestimating the potential for catastrophe, or overreacting to negative
events. A person who has anxiety expects the worst. A bit of turbulence during
air travel, for example, is perceived as an impending crash. A poor grade on a
test is translated as Im a failure.
Underestimating coping mechanisms. People with chronic anxiety rarely
evaluate a situation, come up with concrete steps to deal with it, then carry out
the plan. They assume theyll fall apart at the rst sign of trouble.
Intolerance for uncertainty. Nobody loves uncertainty. But chronic worriers
cant stand doubt or unpredictability. For these people, anxiety is used as a
method to predict what the future has in store and to control the outcome but
often through acting as a mind reader or a fortune teller, lling in the blanks by
jumping to conclusions, such as waiting for lab tests with the thought, I know
they will show I have cancer.

individual may begin to experience impairment in daily
functioning, she explained. This can be seen by avoidance
behaviors, such as not attending an important business

family, peers, employers and co-workers, she added.
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of
America (adaa.org), anxiety disorders, including generalized
anxiety, phobias and panic disorders, are the most common
mental illness in the United States, affecting some 18
percent of the American population. The cost of anxiety
disorders in this country is enormous, as much as $42 billion
each year, spent mainly on health care visits for physical
symptoms related to the anxiety. Women are more often
affected by anxiety than are men, although certain types
of anxiety conditions, such as social anxiety disorder, affect
both men and women equally.
How to tell if you should seek treatment for your
worries? It essentially has to do with the level of suffering
youre experiencing, and how long youve been suffering,
said Carolyn Daitch, Ph.D., Director of the Center for
the Treatment of Anxiety Disorders in Farmington Hills,
Michigan, and author of numerous books and CDs on
anxiety disorder. Many people react with anxiety to
something thats happened during the day, she elaborated.
If they can move along and forget about it, they probably

According to Amanda Burger, Ph.D.,
a licensed psychologist in private
practice and on faculty at Cedarville
University in Ohio, the best treatment
for any type of anxiety includes
cognitive behavioral therapy and,
sometimes, medications. Medications
dont cure the problem, but they can
help with symptom management,
said Dr. Burger. Cognitive behavioral
therapy is a type of treatment that
helps people to identify and change
thought patterns that are leading to
anxiety, and then begin to challenge
their fears by exposing themselves to
things they may have begun to avoid
due to anxiety.
For example, if youre anxious about
public speaking and have avoided
opportunities to make presentations
at work, you may learn to identify
negative or inaccurate thoughts that
cause your anxiety, such as, Im
going to make a fool of myself, or
Ill forget everything and freeze up.
These thoughts are replaced with
more realistic ones, such as I work
hard to prepare myself for speaking,
and Ill be using PowerPoint for the
presentation, so I wont forget what
I need to get across to my audience.
Then you may work with the
therapist to seek out public speaking
engagements and tackle them
successfully, rather than continuing to
avoid them.
The best news? While many people
with excessive worries or anxiety fail
to seek treatment for their condition,
the majority of those who do get
professional care can be treated.

TIPS TO HELP PUT
THE LID ON WORRYING
If you nd yourself chronically stressing about multiple things in life, here are some techniques from
the health experts that can help you to put the lid on your worries:
Make a time for worrying, rather than trying to banish it completely or allow it to take over, suggested Carolyn Daitch,
Ph.D., Director of the Center for the Treatment of Anxiety Disorders in Farmington Hills, Michigan. If you have an anxious
thought, write it down, put it in an envelope and put it away for a certain worry time, she explained. Then, if the worry
pops up again, she added, remind yourself that you can think about it later, so theres no need to worry about it now.
Dene the worry, advised Tina B. Tessina, Ph.D., psychotherapist and author of It Ends With You: Grow Up and Out of
Dysfunction. If youre feeling anxious or worried, or you cant stop thinking about some event that hasnt happened yet,
take a few moments to write down whatever is worrying you. If you cant write it down, think it through carefully until you
can clearly say what youre worrying about. Clarifying your worries will stop the free-oating sensation of anxiety with no
basis, she explained.
Take your worries to court, in order to test their reality, said Dr. Daitch. Worry is like that reel to reel tape it goes
round and round, she explained. Ask yourself: What is my worry? What is the evidence to support it? How would I
deal with it if it were true? Many times this type of an exercise helps to distinguish between a realistic or what-if worry
and also help to dene whether you can do something about the problem or prepare for the problem or whether it is out
of your control.
Take action to solve your worries. Sometimes worry is a way to procrastinate, said Dr. Tessina. If there is something
you can do, do it. Making a call to an ill friend or relative, getting an estimate of costs for a repair youre worrying about,
or making a doctors appointment to check out a worrisome symptom helps to decrease anxiety because youre taking
action to solve the problem.
Hone your skills in accepting uncertainty. Many things in life are out of your control, which can fuel a worriers intolerance
for uncertainty. But that doesnt mean that all uncertain events will turn out in a negative way. And even if they do, you will
be able to handle it. To test this theory, think about something in the past that you were uncertain about. Perhaps you failed
to call a friend when her mom died, and you were worried that she would be angry at you. When you nally called her,
how did it turn out? If she was happy to hear from you and accepted your condolences, however late the worry was
groundless. If she was hurt or angry and you apologized to her you were able to handle the situation.
Be mindful, advised Dr. Daitch. When your mind keeps focusing on worries, bring it back to the present. Pay attention to
your surroundings, the rhythm of your breathing, your changing emotions and thoughts. Acknowledge your anxious thoughts,
but dont get stuck on them.
Learn relaxation techniques. According to Dr. Daitch, its impossible to be relaxed and anxious at the same time. If your
body is revved up by the emotional part of your brain, you can relax your body with yoga, deep breathing or meditation,
which will calm your brain, too.

David Calhoun has proven that anything is
possible when you set your mind to it. The 22-year-
old conquered obesity a problem that plagues more
than one-third of U.S. adults, according to the Centers
for Disease Control to become the 2013 MaxForm
Life Challenge Champion.
When he started the challenge, David weighed 337
pounds and had been considered morbidly obese
since childhood. He suffered from low energy, had
a bad relationship with food and was threatened by
several health issues, including dangerously high
blood pressure.
Like many 20-somethings, David enjoyed regular
social gatherings that involved beer and burgers or
pizza. In other words, his lifestyle fostered weight
gain. Add to that the fact that David had always been
overweight, did not understand proper nutrition, and
did not like to exercise. A total turnaround seemed
impossible. Ive struggled with obesity my entire life,
David said. Doctors told me I was going to die if I
didn't hx this problem."
When he married his wife, Brittany, last year, David
felt it was time for a change. He started thinking more
about the future, about one day having children.

tell myself that the work is worth the
results, David said. I knew that no
matter what happens I am going to
do this.
One thing that continues to keep
David moving forward is that he
likes to visualize where he wants to
be. His goal is to achieve 4 percent
body fat, to have nice abs and to
one day compete in a bodybuilding
competition. David also wants to
become a personal trainer and

from his desire to help people.

and physically disabled children. He

Train Like A
CHAMPION
To win the 2013 MaxForm Life Challenge, I knew
I had my work cut out for me. I got my nutrition
dialed in thanks to my certied tness nutrition
coach at my local Max Muscle store. And I found
an incredible trainer who took me through some
brutal workouts, much how a football player would
train to be on top of his game. The exercises that I
did helped me lose fat, gain muscle and made me
stronger. My trainer would change sets as my skill
level and endurance increased. I started out doing
three sets with 10 reps per set (not maxing out but
pushing myself) going up in weight each set. Now
I am at 7 sets with 10 reps per set going up in
weight. The results have been amazing! Here is a
sample of some moves I used to help me become
Max Muscle's latest MaxForm Life Challenge
champion. I hope you like them as much as I do!
WARM UP/CARDIO
Before each workout, I usually do a
combination of drills such as burpees, battle
ropes, suicides and quick feet karaoke
for 30 minutes.

DUMBBELL CURLS SUPERSET WITH DUMBBELL
OVERHEAD TRICEP EXTENSIONS
Curls: Stand with feet hip-width apart, dumbbells in each hand, palms facing
inward. Slowly exhale as you lift up the dumbbells (your elbows remaining
locked and stable at your sides) higher than 90-degrees. Slowly return to the
starting position. After completing your reps, start doing the tricep extensions.
One set of curls plus one set of extensions completes one total set.
Tricep Extensions: Stand with feet hip-width apart, arms raised up with
elbows bent at 90-degree angles, a dumbbell in your hands behind your head.
Keeping your elbows in place, exhale as you lift the dumbbell high overhead,
then return to starting position. Repeat for reps.
Notes: Start with 20-pound dumbbells for your rst set and work your way up
to 45 pounds. Do 10 curls and 10 extensions per set. Do three sets.

Curls: Sit at a curl machine, feet at

Curls: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and slight knee
bend to relieve stress on your lower back. Grasp the EZ bar
with an underhand grip bar hanging straight down and

the biceps. Inhale as you return to start position. Repeat for 10
reps. Then move straight to lying tricep extensions.
Tricep Extensions: Lie on your back on a bench. Using a
close grip and with arms extended, hold the barbell straight
up above your head. Inhale as you lower the bar by bending
at the elbows until your arms are perpendicular to the oor.
Exhale as you return to start, contracting the triceps hard at
the top of the movement. Repeat for 10 reps. Do three sets.

you can do in less than 20 minutes in the
comfort of your own home.
High intensity interval training
(HIIT) involves workouts where you
perform at 100 percent effort for
a short time, followed by a short
and sometimes active recovery.
All out intensity efforts resulting
in shortness of breath require the
body to take in excess oxygen
post-exercise in order to recover,
says Eric Salvador, head instructor
at The Fhiiting Room studio in
New York City. This process,
commonly referred to as after
burn, boosts metabolism for hours
post-exercise. Get your burn on
with this HIIT workout. Repeat the
entire circuit twice.
Equipment Needed: Jump rope
Interval 1
s Jump rope for one minute (aim for
80-100 reps)
s Do 10 squat thrusts. How to do it:
Stand with your feet together, squat
down keeping your knees in line
with your ankles, place your hands
on the oor next to your feet. Jump
your feet backwards into a pushup
position. Then jump feet back in and
return to standing. Add intensity by
jumping after you stand up.
s Do 10 pushups. How to do it: Get
into plank position. Keeping your
elbows as close to your body as
possible, bend your elbows and
lower yourself down as close to the
ground as you can without touching
the ground. Push yourself back up.
Interval 2
s Jump rope for one minute (aim for
80-100 reps)
s Do 8 squat thrusts
s Do 8 pushups
Interval 3
s Jump rope for one minute (aim for
80-100 reps)

Vinyasa yoga, also known as ow, builds heat and focuses on getting your
heart rate up. These poses not only awaken and open the front and back
of the body, says Karen Kassover, certied yoga instructor at Sports Club/
LA and Reebok Sports Club/NY in New York City, They also strengthen your
core, arms and legs, energize your spine and center your mind. Find your
calm during this busy time of year by trying this sequence from Kassover.
1. Start in chair pose utkatasana, feet together, knees slightly bent, arms extended at 45 degrees in
front of you, abs engaged and back straight. Hold for 8 deep breaths, working the lower body, thighs
and quads.
2. Fold forward into a standing forward bend, arms hanging forward head relaxed.
3. From here step (beginner) or jump (advanced) back into chatarunga, hands on the ground, legs fully
position. Jump your feet back up to your
hands. Stand up and jump as high as your
can. Return to starting position. Repeat for
20 seconds.
Tabata 2: Alternating Reverse Lunge
Targets: lower body, quads, glutes,
adductors, calves, hamstrings
How To Do It: Stand tall, arms at your sides,
and take a step backwards with your
right leg. Lower down to a squat, bending
both knees to 90 degrees. Keep right hip
directly in line with your right knee, heel
lifted and left knee directly over your
left ankle. Continue to lower until your
right knee almost touches the hoor. Using
your legs, raise back up to start position.
Repeat stepping back with the left leg.
Tabata 3: Speed Skaters
Targets: cardio
How To Do It: Stand with your feet hip-
width apart, arms at your sides. Hop as
far as you can to your right and land on
your right foot, sweeping your left leg
diagonally behind you, while swinging your
left arm across your body and right arm
behind your back. Jump to the left and
repeat on the opposite side.
Tabata 4: Caterpillar Crawl to
Pushup
Targets: upper body, core, shoulders,
chest, arms, legs
How To Do It: Begin standing with feet
together. Bend over all the way, touching
your hands to the ground. Walk your
hands forward until your body is in a
pushup position. Perform a pushup.
Walk your hands back towards your feet
and stand up.
Tabata 5: V-Ups
Targets: core, abs
How To Do It: Lie down on your back on
the hoor, legs extended straight, arms
straight back overhead. Keeping your
legs straight and feet together, lift your
legs into the air as you simultaneously
raise your arms and upper body off the
ground. Slowly return back to starting
position.

6. Step right foot forward into Warrior 1 (virabhadrasana I), right knee bent directly over right ankle, left leg straight
with toe pointing towards the left wall, arms reach up, and overhead, back arched to lift chest upward. Hold 8
breaths.
7. Open to Warrior 2 (virabharasana II), twisting your upper body to the left, right arm extended straightforward, left
arm extended towards the back wall. Hold for 8 breaths.
8. Cartwheel hands to the oor and lower into chartangua.
9. Inhale into upward dog and exhale into downward dog. Hold 5 breaths.
10. Jump forward to the front of the mat and fold forward. Bend knees back into chair pose.
Repeat sequence 5 times from the beginning.
VINYASA YOGA
TABATA
PROTOCOL
Tabata is a particular form of high
intensity training that can help improve
not only aerobic systems but anaerobic
as well. And it can be done in four
minutes hat. Tabata is amazing
because in as little as four minutes you
can increase your aerobic capacity,
anaerobic capacity, vO2 max, resting
metabolic rate and burn more fat
than a traditional 60-minute aerobic
workout, says Caitlin McGowan, Group
Fitness Nanager at Equinox. As with
every tabata protocol, perform each
tabata below at maximum capacity for
20 seconds, then rest for 10 seconds.
Repeat each eight times for a total of
four minutes on each move.
Tabata 1: Burpee
Targets: full body, arms, chest, quads,
glutes, hamstrings
How To Do It: Get into a squat position.

BARRE WORKOUT
For those who want to lengthen their muscles, strengthen their
core and tone up overall, barre is for you. These workouts
combine ballet work with core conditioning focusing on both
alignment and balance. Beyond helping you channel your
inner ballerina, the barre is benecial when it comes to balance
and opposition, which will help you engage more deeply,
says Jill Dailey, ACSM, founder of the Dailey Method in San
Francisco. Its also a great component to improve exibility.
These elements come together to give you the long, lean
physique that many look for. Here is an at-home workout to try
created by Dailey that showcases moves from her method.
Spinal Extension
-Lie on the hoor, hands at your sides on your stomach
with your toenails, hipbones and palms of hands pressed
into the ground.
-Engaging your abs, slowly lift your chest off the ground
10 times, keeping hands and feet on the hoor.
-Layer on by lifting your chest, legs and arms as high as
possibly, and tap inner thighs towards the midline.
-Repeat for 25 reps.
Flat Back on the Floor
-Lay hat on your back on the hoor, knees bent so your
feet are on the hoor.
-Using your abs, press your low back into the hoor.
-Lift one leg at a time in the air over your hips, making
sure to keep your low ribs tight and low back on the hoor.
-Repeat for 10 to 20 reps with each leg.
Neutral Spine Plank
-Start on all fours, hands directly under your shoulders,
hngers spread wide, toes curled under.
-Focus on keeping a neutral spine as you pull in your
abdominal region and lift your knees half an inch off the
hoor.
-Repeat for 10 reps.
Seat Work on all Fours
-Start on all fours, hands directly under your shoulders,
hngers spread wide, toes curled under.
-Keep your chest open and tuck your pelvis forward to
lengthen out your low back.
-Reach your right leg up and straight out behind you,
rotating your hips down towards the hoor so your hips are
even.
-Keeping your left leg with toes curled under, abs engaged,
lift your left arm (opposite of leg lifted) straight out in front of
you.
-Pull both the arm and leg back in.
-Repeat for 10 reps on each side.
Lunge Thigh Work
-Start in a kneeling position facing and holding onto a stable
surface in front of you (counter top, chair, couch), arms fully
extended.
-Step your right leg forward so that your foot is directly
underneath your right knee and your left knee is underneath
your left hip.
-Keeping a neutral back, abs engaged, curl your left toes
under and left your back knee up just a few inches off the
ground.
-Return to start position.
-Repeat for 10 reps on each side. MS&F

I am honored to be the
winner of the 2013 MaxForm
Life Challenge. What an amazing
journey it has been so far, as my
life is now forever changed! Not
only has winning the MaxForm Life
Challenge helped me take control
of my life, but it has made me
realize that impossible is nothing
and that I never need to be afraid
to give something my all.
During my transformation, I
learned to eat clean (thanks to
Artie Quaranta at Max Muscle
Wilmington, NC), stay positive,
work hard and trust what my
personal trainer, Alex Croteau, was
telling me. This was no easy task
for me. I had to swallow my pride
and accept the fact that my way
of living was not working at all.
Once I learned to listen and stop
compromising, things began to
simply fall in to place. I had more
energy, I was happier than I have
ever been, I was making my wife
and family proud, and I felt like I
was on top of the world.
I have struggled with being
morbidly obese my entire life.
When I was in the 9th grade, I
weighed 289 pounds. I went to the
hospital for high blood pressure,
rapid weight gain (I put on 55
pounds in one year), irregular
heart beat and I was a borderline
diabetic. So my father got us a
gym membership and we worked
out every morning before school
(5 a.m. workouts were brutal).
I also took up boxing and mixed
martial arts at night. I worked out

to no understanding of diet and
nutrition; I would just eat like a
mad man during the day, cut
out sweets, soft drinks and
eat nothing after 7 p.m. I
somehow managed to get
down to 225 pounds. I was

year I gained back all the
weight plus more.
It was after I got
married in June 2012
and saw the wedding

In-Betweens these are the soy,
peanuts, quinoa, etc. Typically these
are classihed by what macro dominates
most example peanut butter is
about 6 grams of carbohydrates, 6
grams of protein and 16 grams of fat
so we consider it a fat!
And why do we need each of these?
What is their fundamental purpose?
CARBOHYDRATES they give us energy
for working out, for concentrating
at our job or in school; they provide
glucose to the central nervous system.
PROTEINS they form the basic building
blocks for the body: muscles, bones,
soft tissue
FATS important for providing energy
and cushioning for the body to prevent
injuries when we bump into something
or fall down
Understanding how these all go
together to build a nutrition plan
is where the science comes in. As
stated earlier every person's body is
different and will respond differently to
when and how much of these macros
are consumed, and the specihc times
that all of these are consumed at. The
body has needs.
Lets break down this information
into a little more detail. Bear with me,
this is important stuff and will help
you reach your goals! There are a few
simple rules we use at Max Muscle
when designing nutrition plans to help
clients get the best results.
Eat every 3-4 hours regardless if
you're hungry or not. This will keep
the body properly fed and hydrated
while keeping glucose levels steady.
Eat a protein every time you
have a carbohydrate. There is so
much talk about the glycemic index and
the proper number of this and that, and
it can really be as simple as keeping
things balanced by eating carbs with
proteins.
Avoid sugar! When choosing your
carbohydrates, pay attention to the
amount of sugar that is in your choice.
Too complicated? Make sure your carbs
contain hber. And more than 3 grams is
preferable.
If you count calories, know that
1 gram of carbohydrates has 4
calories same for protein; while 1
gram of fat has 9 calories. Our nutrition
plans make this part simple for you!

Ingredients
1 Tbsp extra light olive oil
1 Tbsp minced garlic
1 tsp horseradish
2 Tbsp 100 percent pure honey
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp fresh lime juice
1 tsp crushed red pepper akes
1 lb. raw, peeled, deveined shrimp
tsp lime zest
tsp lemon zest
1 Tbsp fresh chopped parsley
Directions
In a medium sized frying pan, saut olive oil, garlic,
horseradish, honey, lemon and lime juices and red pepper
akes for 2 minutes, stirring. Add shrimp in a at layer cooking
for 4 minutes, then ip, sprinkle with zests and parsley and
continue cooking for 3 minutes without stirring. Toss the shrimp
then put on a bed of your favorite veggies or quinoa or both!
Ingredients
1 banana
1 cup unsweetened vanilla
almond milk
1 scoop banana MaxPro
protein powder
cup walnuts
Directions
Cut the banana into thirds,
place in a lidded container and

Festive Fall Chicken Salad
Ingredients
2 boneless chicken breasts boiled in garlic and herbs and
chopped
zucchini sliced and chopped
2 boiled eggs chopped
1 cup reduced sugar craisins
cup chopped red onion
Dressing: cup plain greek yogurt mixed with 1 tsp truvia
and 2 tsp apple cider vinegar (mix dressing and set aside)
Directions
Boil chicken breasts in garlic and herbs for a couple hours.
Mix all these ingredients together and serve in a Josephs
mini ax whole grain pita. There are several substitutions for
this recipe: for example, use chopped grilled or blackened
chicken versus boiled. Use cucumber versus zucchini. Use
reduced fat mayo or miracle whip instead of greek dressing.
Ingredients
4 Tbsp curry powder
2 tsp crushed red pepper akes (you can
modify this to reduce heat)
tsp sea salt
1 cup water
1 Tbsp extra light olive oil
1 lb boneless turkey breast cutlets
6 baby bella mushrooms sliced thin
1 red bell pepper cut in to thin strips
cup chopped green onion
Directions
Mix curry powder, red pepper akes, sea salt
Spicy Curry Turkey
and water in a medium-large mixing bowl. Slice
the turkey cutlets into thin strips and add them to
the curry mix and make sure to coat well. Heat a
large skillet (that has a lid) with the olive oil and
pour in the turkey and curry marinade cooking
through approximately 10 minutes, stirring
to ensure even cooking. Turn heat to low and
evenly spread the sliced mushrooms across the
turkey, cover and let cook for 5 minutes. Remove
lid and evenly spread the bell peppers across the
mushrooms. Place the lid back on and let cook for
3 minutes. Remove lid and evenly spread the onion
over the bell pepper, place the lid back on and let
cook for 2 minutes. Serve over brown rice.

Ingredients
3 cups whole raw almonds
cup egg beaters
2 Tbsp Truvia baking blend
1 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1/8 tsp ground cloves
1/8 tsp allspice
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix the sugar and spices
together in a small bowl (you can also add cup dry oats to
this spice mixture). In small portions, dip the almonds in the egg
(to coat the most almonds at once, place the egg in a bowl
and have the almonds in a small colander that ts in that bowl
to drip back into the bowl), drip off excess and toss in the spice
mixture. Toss off excess spice and put the coated almonds on a
baking sheet that has been sprayed lightly with fat-free cooking
spray. Bake for 10-15 minutes (watch closely toward the end to
prevent burning). Allow to cool on the baking sheet, then store
in an air-tight container. One serving is approximately cup.
SPICED ALMONDS
Spiced Fruit Compote
Ingredients
1 cup fresh blueberries
6 fresh strawberries, chopped
1 pear, peeled, cored and chopped
1 Tbsp truvia
1 tsp cinnamon
tsp nutmeg
tsp allspice
tsp ground cloves
scoop Cinnamon Roll MaxPro protein
Directions
Put all the ingredients in a medium sauce pan stirring until
mixture starts to boil. Reduce ame to as low as possible
and allow to simmer a few minutes until mixture starts to
thicken. Stir occasionally just to make sure it isnt sticking
or burning. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Add a
half scoop of Cinnamon Roll MaxPro protein powder if
youd like. Spread over a slice of toasted P28 bread or
have on graham crackers. Use this in place of jelly!

Short-Term Soy and Whey
Protein Supplementation Does
Not Lead to Anti-Estrogenic
or Anti-Anabolic Effects

Many resistance-trained males are concerned that consuming soy


protein will result in increased estrogen levels that may affect muscle
strength and size. To investigate this, Dr. W. Kraemer and his colleagues
at the Human Performance Labs at the University of Connecticut
examined the effects of soy and whey protein supplementation on sex
hormones following short-term heavy resistance exercise. All subjects
completed 3 experimental treatment conditions supplementing with
whey protein isolate (WPI), soy protein isolate (SPI) and maltodextrin
placebo control for 14 days with participants ingesting 20 g of their
assigned supplement each morning. Following supplementation, subjects
performed an acute heavy resistance exercise test consisting of 6 sets
of 10 repetitions in the squat exercise at 80 percent of the subjects one
repetition maximum. Researchers
found the following results: 1)
lower testosterone responses
following supplementation with
soy protein, 2) positive blunted
cortisol with the use of whey
protein at some, 3) no difference
in sex hormone binding globulin
(SHBG) between experimental
groups and 4) no differences
between groups in changes in
estradiol concentrations. Main
ndings demonstrate that 14
days of supplementation with
soy protein does not lead to
anti-estrogenic or anti-anabolic

MITOCHONDRIAL FUNCTION

Skeletal muscle mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with aging and diabetes, which
decreases respiratory capacity and increases reactive oxygen species. Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)
possesses anti-oxidative and anti-diabetic properties. For this study, researchers used aged
mice that were supplemented with or without ALA in their drinking water for 1 month. These
researchers found that ALA supplementation improved body composition, glucose tolerance
and energy expenditure in the aged mice and concluded that ALA improves skeletal muscle
energy metabolism in the aged mice possibly through enhancing AMPK-PGC-1alpha-mediated
mitochondrial biogenesis and function. Moreover, ALA increases lean mass loss possibly by
suppressing protein synthesis in the skeletal muscle by down-regulating the mTOR signaling
pathway. Thus, ALA may be a promising supplement for treatment of obesity and/or insulin

Magnesium is an essential mineral often overlooked


in athletes. Surveys of athletes reveal that intake of
magnesium is often far below recommended levels. To
better understand the impact of magnesium intake on
strength in male athletes, researchers evaluated energy
and magnesium intake from seven-day diet records.
