Housing Unit An Integrated Activity

Name:___________________________

PART A

Housing Unit Design & Technology

ACTIVITIES

1.

Sketch a rough floor plan of your imaginary Cabin using rectangles, squares and circles. Identify what each room will be used for - kitchen etc. Your house may be one or two stories. It may also have a basement, attic, loft and a garage if you wish. All designs may have the following: * Full Bath (you may have an outhouse) * Kitchen * Living Room * 2 entrances * Windows in each room * Two or more Bedrooms * Closets in every bedroom

Your design is not limited to just the above rooms, you may have other rooms/loft. If you chose an Outhouse as well/instead of indoor washroom, its materials must be included in all costs. 2. Using grid paper and straight edge, draw a scale model of your sketched imaginary house using the scale of 1/4 inch = 1 foot. The minimum area is 384 square feet (24' X 16') and the maximum is 864 square feet (36" X 24'). From your scale drawing find the perimeter, area, and wall surface area (based on wall heights of 8 feet/2.5 metres) of each room . Also, calculate the perimeter and area of your house. Draw to scale the four profiles/elevations of your house. Include windows and doors, the roof lines and the colour/texture of the exterior surfaces. Using one or two point perspective, create a 3 - D representation of the exterior of your scale house. Identify the following terms: Passive Energy, Solar Energy and Wind Energy. How could some, or all, be incorporate into your house design to help save some nonrenewable energy. Using box-board and other materials from home/school, create a scale model of your imaginary house; including interior walls. * Exterior and interior surface finishes are not necessary.

PART B

Material Requirements
Through the following activities students will use their created floor plan to cost out the real construction material costs of their cabin. Using catalogues, flyers, information sheets, etc. from building supply stores, create a data collection table of required materials you need to build the cabin. Your total limit, including 13% tax, is $50.00 per square foot. Foundation/Support Sub-Floor Walls - Framing - Exterior Sheathing - Exterior Cladding - Insulation - Interior Cladding Roofing - Trusses/Rafters - Sheathing - Insulation - Exterior Cladding - Interior Cladding Windows Doors - Exterior - Interior Heating Plumbing - Kitchen - Bathroom Electrical - Panel and Circuit Breakers - Wire - Outlet Boxes - Junction Boxes - Lighting Recepticals

PART D

Housing Unit Communications Descriptive Paragraph

Write a descriptive paragraph about your cabin. Pretend you are in the real-estate business and you must interest potential buyers in the home and property.

Comparative Paragraph
Write a paragraph comparing a Canadian house with a traditional home for a different cultural country.

Recount Paragraph
Write a paragraph recounting how you determined what type of green technologies to use in your house - consider solar/wind, propane, and hydroelectric.

Narrative Paragraph
Write a short narrative about moving day and some possible difficulties which may arise.

Expository Paragraph
Write a paragraph about the advantages or disadvantages of internet shopping verses store shopping.

Procedural Paragraph
Write a paragraph explaining how to build a wall of your cabin.

Report Paragraph
Write a report explaining why you selected the type of major appliances you plan to purchase, for example: refrigerator, oven/stove, wood stove.

Explanatory Paragraph
Write a paragraph explaining how you would improve your house design and what furnishings you would use to complete it.

Curriculum Outcomes
MATH
Number Sense and Numeration < compare and order fractions and decimals; divide numbers by 0.1, 0.01, etc. (scale); pose problems involving fractions, decimals, and percentages; convert between fractions and decimals and percentages; apply percentage in problem solving involving discounts, sales tax, and simple interest. Measurement < make increasingly more informed and accurate measurements in perimeter, circumference, area and volume. Geometry and Spatial Sense < recognize 3-D figures from their different views; sketch and build 3-D figures using net sketches; identify the angle properties of intersecting lines. Patterning and Algebra < find patterns and describe them using words and algebraic expressions, evaluate simple algebraic expressions by substituting fractions and decimals for variables. Data Management and Probability < collect primary data using sample populations/product lists on tally charts; create computer data base(s) for information; create bar, line, picto, and circle graphs, and picto-grams and use the information to solve problems; extrapolate from a line (or other) graph to predict a future trend; explore with technology (computers) to find the best presentation of data. Decision Making

Art

Perspective < using parallel, converging (angles), intersecting and perpendicular lines to create 3-d images. Design < using ruler, compass, and protractor (angle development) create designs through repetitive patterns. This can also be done using computer technology. < origami/paper folding to create scale furniture/appliances/people/animals for your house.

Technology

Computers < construction of data bases, spreadsheets, and graphs. Use of spreadsheet applications. < word processing of paragraphs. < use geometer sketchpad to construct different elevations or floor plans of your imaginary house. Construction < construct, out of box board and card board, your Utopian house as a scale model from your 2-D floor plan. < construct, using 3-D nets of geometric shapes, scale models of basic furniture, appliances etc.

History and Geography

Canada and the World < compare Canadian houses with homes of other cultures. < compare furniture and appliances between two cultures < explore/investigate similarities in art, food, clothing and utilities between the two cultures.

Language Arts

Writing < spelling, punctuation. < word use and vocabulary presentation. < visual presentation: types of fonts, spreadsheets, charts and graphs (computer/hand generated work) Reading < plan a research project and carry out the research. Oral and Visual Communication < provide clear answers to questions and well constructed explanations or instructions in class work. < listen attentively to organize and classify information and to clarify thinking. < contribute constructively in groups. < demonstrate the ability to concentrate by identifying main points and staying on topic. <

Media Presentation
< create media works of some technical complexity.
