Sociopaths

Sociopath versus Psychopath Sociopaths and psychopaths are antisocial personality disorders. Each has similar and different traits causing them to display antisocial behavior. Both the sociopath and psychopath get their antisocial personality disorder from a mixture of environmental and genetic factors and they both have the capacity for violence. Not all psychopath or sociopaths will become criminals but they have the potential to engage in depraved or illegal behavior. The psychopath and sociopath also have many clear differences. When conducting a criminal investigation it is important to understand the differences especially when developing a criminal profile. A member of a special behavioral science unit for Homeland Security would benefit from understanding the distinction from the sociopath and the psychopath. Sociopaths have antisocial personality disorder. Antisocial Personality Disorder is the clinical term used for the mental disorder associated with the traits of sociopaths and psychopaths. A sociopath is incapable of showing empathy or feeling emotion for others. They are extremely focused on their own needs and desires and are extremely manipulative. The sociopath masks their criminal and deviant behavior behind a faced of charm. They are outgoing and can easily manipulate others. Sociopaths have delusions of grandeur, and oftentimes feel overly entitled to certain positions, people, and things (). While they put on a good face inside the sociopath is insecure and lashes out at other in frustration. They are driven to engage in their bad acts but calculated enough to put on a false faade. The sociopath, however, cannot suppress emotions if they are anger, frustrated, or annoyed. While they may be charming at all times they lash out at others.

Sociopaths

Sociopaths are criminals. They display behavior that would be considered or abnormal in society. Most sociopaths are not serial murders or rapists but will engage in event small crimes, such as theft (Ohnine, 2011). Sociopaths are good liars that tell their lies as if they are truths. They feel no shame or guilt at because of their deviant behavior and are incapable of experiencing emotions, such as love and affection. Sociopaths do not love people they are relationships with but instead just want to dominate and control. Many sociopaths are domestic abusers. Sociopaths are selfish and do not feel empathy for others. Psychopaths do not care about others and only care about their own needs. Psychopaths are so driven by their needs they will fail to take the necessary steps to disguise their behavior. A psychopath lacks any type of emotion and takes pleasure in inflicting pain on others. Psychopaths are more guarded and better able to mask their anger or rage. Psychopaths are predators that enjoy stalking their victims or slowly and carefully inflicting pain. They plan their criminal behavior and go to great lengths not t be caught or detected after they have committed a crime. A psychopath will display superficial charm and will be really glib when they speak. They will attempt to appear confident and in control and will believe they are better than other people. The psychopath needs to be constantly entertained and are professional liars. They will lie about even the smallest detail of their lives. Psychopaths think they are puppet masters and love to control other people in their lives. Psychopaths are narcissist who will go to great lengths to get what they want. Not all psychopaths are criminals but when they commit crimes they are very calculated and careful.

Sociopaths

The psychopath and sociopath have many similar characteristics and a few distinct differences. Both the sociopath and the psychopath can be charming and display a facade of charm and caring but the sociopath is disorganized while the psychopath is organized. Both the sociopath and the psychopath are incapable of showing remorse or maintaining lasting and truly loving relationships. Sociopath and psychopaths are capable of hiding their antisocial tendencies behind a false mask of charm. Psychopaths are more intelligent than sociopaths and far better at hiding their identity when committing deviant acts. The sociopath and psychopath are different in the sociopath is less capable of covering up their crimes. They act on impulse which leads them to getting caught. The psychopaths lack of emotion reflects a detached, fearless, and possibly dissociated state, revealing a low-state autonomic nervous system and lack of anxiety (Ohnine, 2013). The psychopath is more calculating and patient and will take the necessary steps to plan the crime to avoid going undetected. Sociopaths do not have the same control making them less dangerous than the psychopath. Psychopaths are more dangerous than sociopaths. Psychopaths are capable of planning and waiting patiently in order to commit a crime. In their planning they will make sure no evidence is left behind. This makes it harder for police or Homeland Security to locate the criminal suspects. Psychopaths are dangerous because they are driven to commit their crimes and do not have a conscious (Knight, 2009). If there is an opportunity to commit a violent crime without being caught they will take advantage of this opportunity. Understanding the difference between the sociopath and the psychopath will assist members of the special behavioral science unit in identifying criminal suspects and better understanding

Sociopaths

their motive. When behavioral unit can develop a profile of the criminal they will be better equipped to eliminate suspects or locate the suspects in society. In a subject interview the type of approach that should be employed will not be the traditional approach. the traditional approach will not work on the sociopath or the psychopath. The interrogator will have to take a more creative approach to the subject interview.
