A new era in outd

As cities continue to grow and reinvent themselves, the use of light in urban design is becoming a key driver in creating a visual identity and experience for a city and its residents. The use of light in outdoor areas allows a city to improve public spaces and public life, creating a more livable community that residents are proud of and can relate to. Philips line of outdoor lighting products can help bring people back into the city at night by helping to light city neighborhoods.
Lighting can play an important role in transforming the look of an outdoor space.Whether you are looking to create a unique identity for your city, add a sense of well-being to an outdoor area, or light a local sports stadium, Philips has a solution for you. Outdoor lighting applications are no longer confined to yellow light sources. Recent technological advances are providing a new alternative that is successful in combining the qualities of daylight with the energy efficiency associated with high-pressure sodium lamps. This alternative is high-quality white light. White light offers many clear benefits when compared to yellow light. Users of white light appreciate it for its improved ambience, greater visibility as well as its energy efficiency. The ambience of white light is perceived as being brighter and more natural than yellow light. With brighter, more natural light comes increased clarity. Moreover, a study conducted in the United Kingdom on white light street lighting indicated that crime was lessened with its use, and community cohesion and pride were increased1. White light also improves visibility for motorists and pedestrians. Research has shown that white light enables drivers to see movement at the roadside from a greater distance, giving them more time to brake2. By increasing visibility for motorists and pedestrians, roads become safer. Aside from improved ambience and visibility, modern white light sources have comparable or even better energy efficiencies than high-pressure sodium sources. And with the latest independent research showing that white light sources are visually more effective than yellow sources at the typical lighting levels used outdoors at night 3, lamp dimming is now also an option as well as using lower wattage lamp alternatives. Using dimming and/or lower wattage options both equate to lower energy consumptionwhile producing the same perceivable result.

oor lighting

Historical context of yellow light for outdoor applications Traditionally, high-pressure sodium lamps have been the first choice in street lighting because they produce high levels of illumination and have a long, reliable lifespan. Even with its benefits, the distinctive and unattractive yellow-orange color makes it difficult to distinguish colors in the area being illuminated. The unnatural tint of our urban streets at night is something users have gotten used to through necessity rather than choice. The changing role of outdoor lighting The role of outdoor (street) lighting has evolved over the years. In the mid 1900s lightings function was to help contribute to reducing road accidents and improving traffic flow.4 Three decades later it also provided visual comfort for motorists. Nowadays, lighting in urban areas is often central in helping to create more livable and inviting streets with an improved ambience.

Aesthetic enhancement
Bringing out the best in buildings, streets and other features of the urban nightscape
Lighting is one of the most competitive elements of the city. It is very important how you handle it. It should have certain individualityit can give a city a certain identity.
Hans Hollein,World Renowned Architect and Designer Few, if any other outdoor lighting options, offer the flexibility of white light. It is suitable for general ambience, floodlighting, illuminating facades and many other applications. It is equally effective complementing modern construction materials like glass, steel and polished stone as it is at highlighting classical structures. It even gives landscaped greenery a healthy, lush look. White light is also perfect for functional lighting of streets and communal areas, producing a natural ambience that is generally preferred by many to the traditional yellow-orange glow of sodium.

Peace of mind
Helping to make people feel more comfortable when they go out at night
Comfort Many people can be worried about walking through certain streets after dark. Often this has to do with a distrust of the unknown; in poorly-lit areas, faces are harder to recognize and pedestrians are more uncomfortable with perceived danger of dark areas. White light helps people feel more comfortable when they go outdoors at night.Through its superior color rendering and a higher perceived brightness, it is easier to distinguish objects, colors, shapes and other details. In particular, facial recognition is easier, even from a distance, which goes a long way towards lowering anxiety. White light creates what you could call a virtuous circle. If city dwellers feel safer about their streets, they will use them more often. Having greater numbers of people walking, cycling and playing makes streets welcoming and less desolate, and may discourage acts of vandalism and crime. Visibility Tests have shown that drivers can detect movement at the roadside faster and from a greater distance with white light 5. Crucially, this can give them more time to stop if a child, adult, cyclist or animal is about to cross their path, or if another car approaches unexpectedly. The converse is also true; pedestrians are more likely to see oncoming traffic and react accordingly. White light can help improve visibility and therefore, potentially help to prevent serious injury or fatalities.

In the past, one of the main justifications for using high pressure sodium lighting was energy efficiency. However, ongoing performance improvements mean the latest white light sources are more energy efficient than their sodium counterparts.

Beyond energy efficiency, with energy-efficient white light solutions such as CosmoPolis, MasterColor Elite or LED options, it is now possible to specify a greater distance between luminaires (in new installations), reduce the mounting height during refurbishment, and/or install lower wattage lamps than used in previous installations. These new cost-saving options not only reduce operating costs, but also CO2 emissionsand at a level lower than was previously considered possiblewith the great benefit of superior light quality.

Savings experienced using CosmoPolis at Naples Pier, Florida

$40.74 per fixture

As Shown in the above chart, the City of Naples was able to save 45% in energy costs or approximately $900 a year in an installation of 27 fixtures along the historic Naples Pier8 . By replacing 100W quartz metal halide fixtures with 60W fixtures featuring the CosmoPolis system, bankable energy-savings provided an attractive return on investment. And likewise freed up dollars to be reinvested into other facilities or other municipal projects.
With such examples, it is easy to see that saving energy with sustainable lighting solutions goes well beyond helping the environment. It also has a significant impact on the total cost of ownership and therefore, bottom-line profitability.

Even a small change can make a big difference!

Aside from the financial and environmental benefits, another distinct advantage of white light is its proven perceived brightness. With white light sources being perceived as brighter than yellow-orange light at low light levels, it becomes possible to reduce overall light output while still giving users what they expect from the light source. And the associated savings can be significant.

Parts of Europe are already capitalizing on this white light opportunity. In fact, standards in the UK have been modified to allow the minimum level of illumination on subsidiary roads and paths to be reduced as much as 30% (depending on the application) when the white light source used has a color rendering of 60 or greater.7 Furthermore, energy efficiency and related cost savings can further be maximized with a dimming solution or with lower wattage lamp alternatives.

BS54891:2003.The British standard BS5489-1:2003 defines which of the specified lighting classes should be used on a given road or area depending on the crime rate, traffic flow, etc.The standard permits a reduction of one lighting class on subsidiary roads (access roads, residential roads and pedestrian or cycle paths) if a light source with a color rendering of 60 or more is used.

* Rated average life is the life obtained, on the average, from large representative groups of lamps in laboratory tests under controlled conditions at 10 or more operating hours per start. It is based on survival of at least 50% of the lamps and allows for individual lamps or groups of lamps to vary considerably from the average.
