Alaundrysymbol,alsocalledacaresymbol,isapictogram whichrepresentsamethodofwashing,forexampledrying,dry cleaningandironingclothing.Suchsymbolsarewrittenonlabels, knownascarelabels,attachedtoclothingtoindicatehowa particularitemshouldbestbecleaned.Therearedifferent standardsforcarelabelsforthedifferentcountries/regionsofthe world.Insomestandards,pictogramscoexistwithorare complementedbywritteninstructions. Treatmentindicatedbythesymbolsis"themaximumpermitted treatment"andisnotrequiredorrecommended.GINETEXstates that"milderformsoftreatmentandlowertemperaturesthanthose indicatedonthelabelarealwayspermitted."Forexample,ifa symbolindicateswashinginhotwaterandtumbledrying, washingincoldwateranddryingonaclotheslinearealso acceptable.
Laundrycaresymbolswith instructionsinJapanese.Thefour symbolsshownindicatethatthe garmentmustnotbewashedin water,mustnotbebleached,maybe ironedonlywithaprotectivepressing cloth,andmustbedrycleaned.

TheCanadiansystemwasformerlythemostcolorfulone,using threecolours:greenfor"goahead",yellowfor"becareful",andredfor"stop".Thissystemhasbeen abandonedwiththedecisiontomovetoacommonNorthAmericanscheme.[1] GINETEX,basedinFrance,istheEuropeanassociationfortextilecarelabelling,andformedin1963after academicconferencesinthelate1950swereformedtodefineonestandardoflabelling.

Thecarelabeldescribestheallowabletreatmentofthegarmentwithoutdamagingthetextile.Whetherthis treatmentisnecessaryorsufficient,isnotstated.Amilderthanspecifiedtreatmentisalwaysacceptable. Thesymbolsareprotectedandtheiruseisrequiredtocomplywiththelicenseconditions.Incorrect labellingisprohibited.Abarbeloweachsymbolcallsforagentlertreatmentthanusualandadoublebar foraverygentletreatment.

Astylizedwashtubisshown,andthenumberinthetubmeansthemaximumwashtemperature(degrees Celsius).Abarunderthetubsignifiesagentlertreatmentinthemachine.Adoublebarsignifiesvery gentlehandling.Ahandinthetubsignifiesthatonly(gentle)handwashing(notabove40C)isallowed. Acrossthroughwashtubmeansthatthetextilemaynotbewashedundernormalhouseholdconditions.
