SOCIAL/HISTORICAL/POLITICAL/CULTURAL CONTEXT
John Bowlbys Theory Bowlbys evolutionary theory of attachment tells us that children come into the world pre-programmed to form attachments with others, because this will help them to survive. This links with Five Kinds of Silence because it shows that since Billy did not receive attachment in his childhood, he did not survive. Abuse - The Violence Against Women Act was developed as a result of extensive public efforts in the late 80's and early 1990s. Violence Against Women Acts focus has extended from domestic violence and sexual assault to also include dating violence and stalking. This relates to Five Kinds of Silence as it was around the time of the play. It shows how the violence acted out by Billy towards the women and how he did not see anything wrong with the harm he was doing.
