Mini Lesson Planning Tool for Integrating Technology Title of Lesson: The Spanish Traditions of the Running of the

Bulls and Bullfighting in Pamplona, Spain Curriculum / Content Area: Modern Languages Level 1/Spanish Grade Level: 9-10 PURPOSE / OBJECTIVES: Students will utilize the Internet to research the annual celebration of the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain and the Spanish bullfight. Students will write a report and topic outline. Students will present the information using presentation software. TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES NEED: Computers with Internet access, printer, LCD projector or other projection device, VCR (optional), AlphaSmarts (optional). Copies of rubrics (see attached) to be used for evaluation for each student, list of websites noted in each step for each student if outside research is to be done. APPROXIMATE DURATION OF THE LESSON: Greater than 120 minutes. BACKGROUND PREPARATION: Student should have experience with word processing, presentation software, and online research. The teacher should bookmark the websites on the computers the students will be using. CURRICULUM STANDARDS: LOE(9-12) Modern 6. Critique digital content for validity, accuracy, bias, currency, and Applications relevance SETTING FOR LESSON: If the school has portable laptops available, the teacher should reserve them for his/her students to use for their research. If this is not a possibility, the teacher will have to conduct the instructional activities in the classroom, then take the students to a computer lab to conduct their research. ACTIVITIES: 1.) Announce that the topics for research and oral presentation are the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, and bullfighting. (Decide if students are to research one or both of the topics.) (Running of the Bulls) This is a site that explains the history and the different parts of the tradition of the Running of the Bulls. 2.) Present these guidelines for the essay part of the research project: (a) Write a report which must be a minimum of 2 pages (double-spaced on computer). This must be in standard English, in your own words, and cited properly. (b) Define all terms that are unfamiliar and include a cover page and bibliography. Provide class time for students to begin research. Provide a list of the websites noted in the following steps for students to use if research is to continue outside of class.

(Running of the Bulls Images) Students can access this site to obtain pictures of the Running of the Bulls. 3.) Explain that the oral presentations will be done in pairs. Present the following guidelines for the presentations. (a) Choose a partner. (Assign partners if you prefer. The partners must cover both topics.) Combine your information to create a topic outline for class use. Your title goes at the top of your paper. Each separate topic that you will present in your oral presentation must to be listed on your outline, leaving space between each topic so that students may take notes as you speak. Your outline is due the day prior to your oral presentation, so that copies can be made for the class. (b )Use slideshow software. (c) Be here. Both students must be present on oral presentation day. Both students must do a part of the oral presentation. (d) Turn in both written reports prior to the presentation. (e) Practice your presentation so you do not have to read your notes. You may speak from note cards. Points will be deducted if the report is read. (f) Present in an orderly and systematic manner, following your topic outline and pausing from time to time to ask the class if there are any questions. Be prepared to answer any pertinent questions on your topic. (g) Explain all visuals used in your presentation. If you are using a video tape clip, arrangements must be made in advance for equipment that is needed. (Information about bullfighting in Spain) This is a site that explains the history and the different parts of the sport of bullfighting. 4.) Provide these guidelines for the reports. (a) When researching the running of the bulls, include the origin and history of the running of the bulls festival, the date and place of the event, the action, the significance to the people of Spain and to Spanish tourism, and any famous people (including Americans) who have participated in this custom. (b) When researching the sport of bullfighting, include the importance of bullfighting to Spanish culture, the history of bullfighting, a bullfighter's training, an explanation of the bullfighter's costume, and an explanation of the different parts of the bullfight. Remind students that all sources should be properly cited. (Bullfighting Images) This is a site that contains many pictures of bullfighting. 5.) Set aside class time for students to give their presentations. Make sure students allow time for questions from the class as they present.
