Definition and objectives of research. Various steps in scientific research. Types of research. Research Design: Meaning, Needs and types; Survey research, Case study research. Unit-2 Population and samples, Sampling techniques, Sampling and non-sampling errors, Sample size, Limitations of sampling. Sources of data: primary data, Secondary data, Methods of data collection, Design of questionnaire, Problems in data collection, Data processing- operations and problems in data processing. Measurement and scaling techniques.

Unit-3 Data analysis: Meaning and methods-Quantitative and Qualitative analysis. Measures of Central tendency, Dispersion, Skewness and Kurtosis. Theoretical distribution: Normal, Poisson and Binomial. Statistical estimation and testing of hypothesis. Non-parametric tests. Unit-4 Concepts of Correlation and Regression, Simple and multiple regression analysis: Estimation of parameters and tests of their significance, Coefficient of determination, ANOVA-one way ,two way. Analysis of Time series. Methods of data reduction: Principal components and factor analysis construction of composite indices. Unit-5 Structure and Components of research report, Types of report, Layout of research report, Mechanism of writing a research report. Data analysis using MS Excel, SPSS and E views. Readings: 1.
