the realm of triadal existence (in which the initiate moves) is definitely an advance into

$hese together em"ody the com"ined forces of the planetary life as registered "y the perfected individual# $hey will eventually ena"le the man to achieve perfection# $hey ena"le the individual to respond to material forces, to soul energy and spiritual life, and they constitute a complete response apparatus to the planetary life, purpose, intent and form# Each of the seven centres is responsive to one or other of the seven rays and their Bualities under the conditioning energy of the soul ray and the forces, emanating from the environment# $hese centres develop progressively and under the impact of circumstances and the

of the four lessons which the applicant has to master and the four lessons which the initiate has to complete in order that a complete fusion of personality and (onad can "e "rought a"out# 5# $he significance of resurrection and ascension, particularly the latter, "ecause little has "een
given out to date anent ascension# $here are certain maAor framewor!s (if I may continue to use this phrase) within which the initiate has to learn ><age )53? consciously to wor!, recognising them for what they are2 once he has learnt to master that which lies within some particular framewor!, he finds that it is only a part, a small fraction, of a still greater whole, within which he must also learn to function and play his part# :irst he, as a disciple, has to learn to wor! within the framewor! of his "lending soulCpersonality# $his tas! at first ta!es the form of character "uilding and disciplining (whilst upon the <ro"ationary <ath), of a struggle to see, of an endeavour to ma!e a continuity of his soul contact# :inally, this leads to the "eginning of the stage of soul and personality merging and at this point he steps upon the <ath of =iscipleship, technically understood# :rom then on his pro"lem is to !now himself as he truly is, to direct energy to the needed centres which are awaiting scientific attention, to superintend consciously the fitting of himself, as a personality, to act as the instrument of the soul and later of the 0ierarchy, to

learn to contact energy, to handle and direct it# $his entails a comprehension of the mechanism within himselfthe seven centres within the vital "odythrough which the contacted energy must flow under soul direction, and it also means the perfecting of the response apparatus and the newly constructed spiritual mechanism which e%oterically ena"les him to contact the outside world, and esoterically ena"les him to contact the world of souls# It implies a steady process of interior perfecting until nothing further remains to "e done within that individual framewor!# $he "ul! of this wor! has "een covered "y the time the fourth initiation has "een ta!en, and has "een completely covered when the fifth initiation is undergone# $his all ta!es much time, "ut when a certain measure of success has "een achieved, when the initiate6s understanding is somewhat enlightened and his energyCuse and his power of direction are "ecoming intelligently applied, he can then "egin to wor! within the framewor! of the greater seven groups, that is, within the 0ierarchy# $his he does first upon the periphery of the hierarchical aura and later as a conscious, accepted and pledged wor!er in some ><age )54? $hen as he goes on and learns to su"mit to the

conscious direction, gradually developed, all the potencies of divinity are his to use, once he can "e trusted, as the advanced initiate can ever "e trusted# 0e is then set free for complete cooperation with the purpose lying "ehind the <lan# 0e has passed out of the human !ingdom into the 0ierarchy2 later he will pass out of the hierarchical group into Shamballa, or out of our planetary life altogether, and either here or there will "egin a greater and more e%tended service# @oming down to the immediate practical issues, the initiate is confronted with the pro"lem of wor! within the individual framewor!, for ,

am not here dealing with the -"age .//0 requirements for the initiations above or beyond the third# 0ere the
initiate has reached the point where he grasps the significant fact that the way into the innermost @entre is most securely guarded2 no one can pass onward and ta!e those more advanced steps which admit into the higher worlds of "eing and of unparalleled potency until he has demonstrated within the

framework of his own life a definite control of energy (and this the "lac! adept also possesses), purity of motive (which the black adept can likewise have, if "y
purity of motive you mean singleChearted and oneCpointed intent), deep love of humanity (which the "lac! adept never has), selflessness, willingness to follow the light wherever it may lead, a"ility to "egin wor! within the larger framewor! the moment such an attempt "ecomes possi"le, clear vision and spiritual insight, a developed intuition, and an undeviating intention and strong faith in the future#

7hen these Bualities "egin to show themselves, it then "ecomes possi"le to admit the initiate to further advancement upon the 7ay# It is "elieved to "e safe for him now to move on a few more steps into greater light, and thenhaving reached his ne%t point of testinghe must there again demonstrate the rightness of his wor! within the individual framewor! and his a"ility to wor! within the greater framewor! in group formation# 0e must appreciate the fact that as he passes upon the upward way he may not safely so do without the safeguards which protect the 7ay from him until he !nows more2 he must learn also that the group protects him and that only with the group can he proceed with security2 he "egins to realise that the group is not only a protection "ut also his chosen and destined field of service# 0e "egins to learn with his group the meaning of the Dunited "reathD referred to in the rule, and also to wor! with the group in Dunified rhythm#D $hus he goes from strength to strength# All the time the 0ierarchy is aiding in his development and at the same time protecting the 7ay from him until such time as glamour cannot reach him# $his individual security of his ><age )58? is only reached

between the time of taking the second initiation and the third$ <rior to that, he is still regarded as a potential ha1ard and as unsta"le# After that, he may suffer from illusion, "ut there is then no
fear of his permanently turning "ac! and reaching the leftChand path and so perhaps, in rare cases, finding his way into the 2lack of speed# <onder on that#

1eginning with this eighth rule which we are now studying, we enter upon the consideration of certain maAor unfoldments, maAor spiritual happenings and a series of maAor awa!enings in consciousness which are in the nature of events# $hese involve li!ewise certain maAor recognitions and appreciations which will affect the initiate increasingly and "ring a"out his eventual attainment# $hese are the factors which condition the date of his achievement and not the character underta!ings and the soul contacts which are so necessary upon the <ath of <ro"ation and upon the <ath of =iscipleship# 7e are principally concerned at this point with the interpretation of the

It must "e remem"ered that the +aws of &ature are imposed upon the mass of men, and cannot "e avoided# If these laws are "ro!en, infringed or evaded, they carry their own penalty within themselves, and this also cannot "e avoided# $hese great protective laws are intended to guard the personalities through which the soul incarnates and eventually to cement and further all the great and possi"le relationships# $he man passes from the stage of antagonism (as an individual) to the control of these natural though divine ><age )5F? laws, to a recognition of their inevita"ility and of their wisdom# $hey automatically then control him# 7hen this control "y the +aws of &ature has "ecome complete, the man "ecomes an aspirant and "egins to come under the +aws of the /oul, which are laws concerned primarily with the esta"lishing of the great :ellowship of the 3niverse# $here has "een much confusion among esotericists upon these points# $hey confuse the discipline to which the personality has to su"mit when coming under soul influence, with the +aws of the /oul which have naught to do with the petty little affairs of the personalityunimportant and unnoticed "y the soul on its own plane"ut with the growing recognition of right group relations2 these are "ased upon a growing understanding of the hierarchical mode of wor! and of interChierarchical relationships# $he +aws of &ature, therefore, concern the activities of the soul in form and are mandatory and accepted "y the form nature# $he +aws of the /oul concern the life of the soul upon its own plane, and the relation which the "lending soul and personality learn to esta"lish with other souls and with the 0ierarchy# $hese are consciously and voluntarily

Law of Life or of Spirit and is the law with which the initiate wor!s3 it is this law he wields# :rom acceptance of the laws of nature and o"edience to the laws of the soul, he passes into
the positive phase of understanding and wielding the +aw of +ife# 1ecause this is a governing law for all initiates, and "ecause we !now that the nature of lifeCenergy or of spirit cannot "e grasped until

after the third initiation, it is e%ceedingly difficult for me to write in e%planation of this
law# 4ou have not yet the initiate consciousness# ><age )55? Law of the Supplementary Seven is ever in force# It functions in the processes going on in the seven centres of the individual man, gathering
$hus the energy from one centre into another until all are centred, controlled and directed in the head# In the stage of what the 0indus call ><age )83? DsamadhiD the vital energies from all the centres are concentrated in the highest head centre in the etheric "ody, in the area Aust a"ove the physical head# $hus the analogy is complete# $he processes of a"straction are (as you may thus see) connected with the life aspect, are set in motion "y an act of the spiritual will, and constitute the Dresurrection principle which lies hidden in the wor! of the =estroyer,D as an old esoteric saying e%presses it# $he lowest manifestation of this principle is to "e seen in the process of what we call =eathwhich is in reality a means of a"stracting the life principle, informed "y consciousness, from the form or the "odies in the three worlds# $hus, the great synthesis emerges, and destruction, death, and dissolution are in reality naught "ut life processes# A"straction is indicative of process, progress and development#

remem"er that the individual initiate, when wielding this law, draws upon the united energy of the 7ill as the group is e%pressing it in Dunified rhythm#D It is "y the use of the Dunited "reathD of the entire group (as much of it as his individual will can assimilate, focus, use and direct) that he augments his own will and its directed force# $he "reath, as we well !now, is the life2 this +aw is the one wielded "y the living or risen @hrist, in perfect harmony with the will of /ham"alla# 0erein lies one of the mysteries of the resurrection initiation a"out which so little has "een told, and it is the very heart of the mystery of the ascension initiation# In this latter initiation the living risen @hrist withdraws or a"stracts 0imself and enters consciously and permanently into the great centre, /ham"alla# $he resurrection and the ascension are the results of the death or destruction of the causal "ody# It can "e seen, therefore, how true the Eospel story is to the purposes of /ham"alla#

+et us now "riefly interpret or rather paraphrase the ><age )84? four sentences "y means of which I have sought to em"ody this law, or as much of it as it is possi"le to put into words, for the enlightenment of the initiates of the future# )# $he +aw demands the entrance of that which can effect a change# 1earing in mind what I have elsewhere given, it is o"vious that that which must find entrance is that vital concentrated will which, when set in motion in an individual, in a group, in a nation, in a !ingdom of nature (a planetary centre), and in the planet as a whole, i#e#, in all the planetary centres simultaneously, will cause a stirring, a changed measure, a new movement and momentum, an uprising and a conseBuent a"straction# $he changes wrought in the centres when the death of the physical "ody is ta!ing place have never yet "een o"served or recorded2 they are, however, definitely present to the eye of the initiate and prove most interesting and informative# It is the recognition of the condition of the centres which ena"les the initiate to !nowwhen in process of "estowing healingwhether the physical healing of the "ody is permissi"le or not# 0e can see whether the will principle of a"straction to which I have "een referring is actively present or not# $he same process can "e seen ta!ing place in organisations and in civilisations in which the form aspect is "eing destroyed in order that the life may "e a"stracted and later again re"uild for itself a more adeBuate form# It is the same under the great processes of initiation, which are not only processes of e%panding the consciousness "ut are rooted in the death or the a"straction process, leading to resurrection and ascension# $hat which effects a change is a discharge (to use a totally inadeBuate phrase) of directed and focussed willCenergy# $his is so magnetic in Buality that it draws to itself the life of the centres, "ringing a"out the dissolution of the form and the release of the life# =eath comes to the individual man, in the ordinary sense of the term, when the willCtoClive in a physical "ody goes and the willCtoCa"stract ><age )85? ta!es its place# $his we call death# In cases of death in war, for instance, it is not then a case of the individual willCtoCwithdraw, "ut an enforced participation in a great group a"straction# :rom its own place, the soul of the individual man recognises the end of a cycle of incarnation and recalls its life# $his it does through a discharge of the willCenergy that is strong enough to "ring a"out the change# .# $he +aw demands that right

It is identified and individual "ut has no implementing form, e%cept that of the greater whole in which it finds its place# &either form nor Buality ("ody nor consciousness) are paramount in the new state of 1eing, "ut only the life aspect, the spirit on its own plane, "ecomes the dominating factor# /ome faint dim light on the significance of this may come if you "ear in mind that our seven planes are only the seven su"planes of the cosmic physical plane# $he process of developing sensitivity in this sevenfold evolution has "een undergone in order to ena"le the initiate to function upon the cosmic astral plane, when withdrawn or a"stracted after the higher initiations# 0e is a"stracted from our planetary life altogether# ,nly one factor could prevent this, and that might "e his pledge to serve temporarily within the planetary ringCpassCnot# /uch em"ers of the 0ierarchy 7ho pledge $hemselves to this wor! are stated to have the 1uddhic consciousness, and the line of $heir descent (occultly understood) is from the Eternal <ilgrim, the +ord of the 7orld, then the 1uddha, and then the @hrist# $hey remain identified through the free choice with the DBuality seen within the light,D and for the term of $heir freely rendered service $hey wor! with the consciousness aspect in order to lay the emphasis later upon the life aspect# 4# $he +aw demands that this is "rought a"out "y the ,ne, wor!ing through the $hree, energising the /even and creating the straight line from there to here, and ending in a point which ignores the $hree# +et me paraphrase this, for detailed comment is not possi"le or permissi"le# $he ,ne directed will (of the individual, ><age )8F? of humanity, of the 0ierarchy) and the great +ords of /ham"alla, wor!ing through the three major centres +head heart and throat2 0umanity, the 0ierarchy and /ham"alla), there"y energise all the seven centres (to the point of a"straction), using the straight line of the antah!arana from a"ove downwards (from the centre of power, the head or /ham"alla), and gather all upwards into a point which is neither of the $hree (/ham"alla, the 0ierarchy and 0umanity) and ignores them, for they must no longer limit the life# $his point lies outside manifestation altogether# A"straction is complete# <onder, therefore, upon this doctrine of a"straction# It covers all life processes, and will convey to you the eternally lovely
