Introduction
Pupils should be aware of different levels of self-
identity, starting with the local neighbourhood or
town, moving on to the city, the region, the country
and the continent. They will also be able to name most
of the countries in the European Union.
Warm up
Write the names of the continents on the
board.
Ask a pupil to circle the continent they come from:
Europe.
Write on the board: European Union. Ask: Is our
country part of the European Union?
Ask pupils about the other countries in the EU.
T: Is France part of the EU?
Pin a map of the EU to the board.
Pupils come to the front. They point to and name
countries in the EU.
Activity 1
Ask: What colours are in our national flag?
Pupils colour the flags following the number key.
Ask about the flags. What colours are in the French
flag?
Answer key 1-France; 2-United Kingdom;
3-Portugal; 4-Italy; 5-Germany; 6 -Spain; 7-Poland;
8-Greece
Activity 2
Pupils label the map of Europe with the countries
in the text box.
Pupils can add other country names if they want.

Project ideas
Make a wall poster with flags from all the
countries in the EU.
Design a flag for the school or town.
