ENGL 1101-017 3 November 2013 Multi-Genre Project: Project Rationale Poverty is a known and widely occurring issue of the world. Lately you hear many political leaders call for a fight against Poverty. Most of what they are saying is empty promises. The ad I chose depicts a mother bird, which is the governments of the world, feeding its baby birds, the poor, promises. Literally the message is promises are not food and poverty is still a major global issue. The three different genres I chose to spread the message of poverty are a newspaper article, bumper sticker, and an encyclopedia entry. In each genre I give my audience facts about how poverty occurs and the necessity to help those below the poverty line. One of the genre pieces that I have chosen is a newspaper article. A newspaper article most likely portrays day-to-day events, such as, sports, world and local news and advertisements. But a newspaper article will most likely include news about wars and conflict that are occurring around the world. The articles length varies depending on the detail of the event or issue. Newspaper articles are well worded in complete sentences. Newspaper articles are most likely serious because they display conflict. They could also be passive in sport related articles. The language of the newspaper article can vary. Most articles portray pictures that give a hint of what the message is of the article. Newspaper articles also give facts, but can also be bias depending on the journalists stance on a

Cheikhali 2 certain issue. Newspaper articles are widely read and now more than ever because of their accessibility on smartphones. The newspaper article I created portrays how conflict leads to poverty. Newspaper articles most likely have topics focused on conflict and violence. The audiences targeted are people who are interested in the world conflicts, issues, and politics. I choose to factor violence and conflict into the issue of poverty to be able to reach the intended audience in the newspaper article and at the same time deliver the facts about poverty and how war causes poverty. Newspaper articles attract readers through daily conflicts and events. The picture used in the newspaper is an African child with a soccer ball and behind him a wall full of bullet wholes. The children in the picture look as if they are poor. They are wearing old, dirty, clothes that are in bad condition. Their facial expressions are drained because of they are living in poverty with no adequate housing and living in fear of being caught up in the crossfire. The image presents that the true victims of conflict and violence are children. On the right side of the article I have details explaining the situation. The introduction briefly explains who, what, where, when, and why of the issue of conflict and poverty. After that it briefly explains how conflict causes refugees, loss of jobs, economic and political instability, and destruction of infrastructure, which makes acquiring resources needed to survive challenging. These aspects of conflict ultimately lead the victims to be pushed closer towards poverty. A bumper sticker as a genre portrays issues ranging from political to controversial. For example, political policies, environmental issues, war, poverty and etc.. The beauty of bumper stickers is they are simple and bias, formatted with big bold wording, usually in fragments or abbreviations and an image covering the whole

Cheikhali 3 background of the sticker. In a bumper sticker you have the freedom in portraying your message through sarcasm and aggressive wording. The bumper sticker is also a unique technique in getting the message through to the public. It will be difficult for individuals to try to avoid it. A bumper sticker is short and to the point and drives an aggressive stance toward an issue. The bumper sticker I shall be using has a picture in the background of poor, starving African reaching out for food. In the middle of the sticker THEY NEED YOUR HELP! is written. The image used in the bumper sticker underlies the suffering the children go through due to poverty. The children in the picture are starving due to famine and malnutrition. The starving children are reaching out for food that is being distributed to them. The children reaching out for food could also imply, they are reaching out for help. The saddening image will make the driver think of what if that was their child, nephew, niece, or grandchild suffering from starvation, in the need for help. The white, bold, large font text gives an aggressive assertion of need to help. The use of black and white in the bumper sticker expresses the seriousness of the issue. The bumper sticker would be asking the audience to help by donating money, food, or clothing to these poor children. The slightest donation could make an immense difference for the child. An encyclopedia entry portrays historical facts and issues to current fact and issues ranging from environment to conflict. Encyclopedia entries are at times lengthy because entries go in depth on a certain issue explaining specific details and giving evidence. Encyclopedia entries have a serious tone getting to the point and explaining facts. Such entries are written in well-worded complete sentences. Encyclopedia entries are great tools for those who want to know more details on specific issues. Recently

Cheikhali 4 encyclopedia entries have been much more accessible due to the Internet. An encyclopedia entry also targets an audience who is interested in the world issues that has surfaced the world. I will be using this specific genre to explain specific details of the causes of poverty. The entry is intended for those who are specifically curious about the situation of poverty. The informative entry gives the reader a slight knowledge of poverty and how it is occurring. Conflict, violence, war, increasing drought, flooding, increasing populations, and changing climatic patterns are causes of poverty that are explained in the encyclopedia entry. I present such information by splitting the text up into separate subsections and with an image underneath each as a way to guide them down the entry and make it much more interesting for the reader. The entry explains over 3 billion people of the world population lives on less than $2.50 a day. Many spend much more than that within minutes of a day. The entry can persuade the reader through its enriched information of facts to do something to help like donating, protesting conflict and war by trying to get the government to use peaceful methods, or by going green, reduce your carbon footprint to reduce the drastic changes of the climate due to global warming. The issue of poverty is serous that has taken many lives away. I believe it is important to create awareness of the issue of poverty. My parents are from Lebanon, which has been torn apart due to many conflicts. Lebanon was hit pretty hard with issues of poverty because of war, which created a fragile economy. It was extremely difficult to obtain a job when there is an increase in refugees from neighboring countries. My father experienced the hardships of poverty growing up in a household of ten children. My fathers experience with poverty gave me the incentive to spread awareness of poverty.

Cheikhali 5 The genres I chose deliver the message of poverty in different ways to different audiences. Each genre has its way to hook its audience and give information about poverty.
