Kronos Quartet commission heads to Toronto at Music in the Barns

January 24, 2014 performance features world premiere, Hitchcock projections & 80s electronica
TORONTO Music in the Barns, in association with the University of Toronto's Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies and Arraymusic, will present an electrifying Nicole Lize portrait event featuring three compositions by the 2013 Jules Lger prize winning Montreal composer, at the landmark 7,500 sq. ft. Mainspace of the Artscape Wychwood Barns on January 24, 2014.

Channeling Lize's eclectic mix of compositional inspirations from rave culture, post-punk, and 1960s psychedelia, this not-to-be-missed concert music experience incorporates her signature notated turntables integrated with performances by the cutting-edge Music in the Barns Chamber Ensemble and Toronto new music champions, the Array Ensemble. The evening, entitled Cinerama, will showcase on surround screens Lizes reworking of Hitchcocks iconic movie moments, for the world premiere of her new arrangement of her composition Hitchcock Etudes. The performance will also include the Kronos Quartet commissioned string quartet, Death to Komische, featuring the Omnichord, an electronic musical instrument produced by Suzuki Music Instrument Corporation in the 1980s and made widely know by musicians David Bowie and Brian Eno. Guests to the Music in the Barns series is the Array Ensemble who will perform their 2011 commission, Lize's multi-instrumental ensemble work, Traumnovelle. In conjunction with the University of Torontos Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies Friday Chat Series, Lize will be appearing at 2 p.m. as a featured speaker leading up to the evenings performance. There will also be a brief Q&A with host Howard Wiseman, York University film professor, at 7:15 p.m. for Music in the Barns' pre-concert chat series.
