Our Programs and Initiatives

Arts and Education Outreach Program By combining basic education and the arts, Red Nose supports the perosnal development of underpriviledged children and provides them with valuable knowledge and skills that will support their formal education and will stay with them throughout their lives. The foundation has developed and grown organically and has created a holistic program the Arts and Education Outreach program (AEOP) that deals precisely with the childrens needs. a) Circus Arts and English Language: The circus arts and English language classes are the foundation of the arts and education outreach program. Red Nose holds classes for each of these subject individuals and use a cross-curricular method to reinforce what the children have learnt. For example, in circus class, the children are encouraged to use English to communicate with each other and their teachers and we use English terminology to describe each of the circus tricks the children learn. There are currently 220 who participate in our circus and English language classes. b) Basic Math, Financial Literacy and Music: A basic math class is offered to the children so that we can help them improve their mathematical skills. Gradually, as the children progress, we introduce them to the idea of money management, including how to set up and manage a bank account. This curriculum for this subject has been developed in cooperation with Bank Indonesia. The final stage of this program sees the children open their own bank account so they can begin saving their money. Additionally, the children take part in our Young Entrepreneurs class where they learn about how to develop creative ideas into a small business and how to go about writing a business plan and a proposal for a small business loan. The children will be given the opportunity to pitch their idea to Red Nose, which will act as a bank and give the children with the most feasible proposals an opportunity to borrow money to launch their own small business, and just like in the real world, the children will be expected to pay back their loan. The children enrolled in this program are also given the opportunity to take music classes. RNF currently offers guitar classes; drum lessons will be added in 2014. c) The Art and Science of Discovery: The Art and Science of Discovery is a new program scheduled to begin in January 2014. The curriculum for this program is being designed in coordination with The University of Queensland in Australia. This program will teach children applied science skills in correlation with their traditional education curriculum. The learning experience will be hands-on and the children will be given the opportunity to try different science experiments for themselves, all the while learning visual arts skills to document and further their understanding of the new information. This program will conclude with a one-week science camp and a one-day science fair where the kids will present their own science experiments to the general public. d) Tutoring, Formal Education Equivalency and Standardized Exam Preparation: Red Nose receives quarterly progress reports from the childrens teachers in order to keep up-to-date with their progress at school and to identify areas where the children may need extra assistance. Red Nose strives to provide this support through its tutoring program. Red Nose is also dedicated to helping children return to school whenever possible. We tutor and prepare the children for the Equivalency Exams that are available to children who have dropped out of school before finishing the 6th, 9th or 12th grade. If the child passes the exam, they are able to return to school. Red Nose works hard to maintain a positive and productive relationship with all of the childrens teachers so that hurdles can be identified and overcome when they arise. e) Career Direction Program: Red Nose creates opportunities for the children to broaden their understanding of their options for the future in the professional world. For the older children, we provide mentoring and guidance regarding their career aspirations and also assist in organizing internships and training programs in Indonesia and overseas whenever possible so that the children can gain some real work experience and increase their competitiveness as job seekers in the job market.

The Hidung Merah Performance Troupe: The most advanced cicus

arts students are invtied to join the Hidung Mera Performance Troupe. The troupe attends rhearsals once a week, giving them the opportunity hone their athletic and artistic abilities and work with their trainers to choreograph routines. This advanced circus skills program also allows the children to work close as a team and further develop their self-esteem and empathy for each other. The troupe performs at private and public events twice a month throughout the year. Formal Education Scholarships: In the 2013-2014 school year, RNF successfully secured and implemented 94 scholarships for students whove been enrolled in the Arts and Education Outreach Program with good standing for more than two years. These children are required to maintain a 70% GPA average and an 80% attendance record to continue receiving this assistance. During the 2012-2013 school year, the scholarship program maintained an 85% retention rate. To date, 95% of the 2013-2014 scholarship recipients have retained their good standing in school and at Red Nose Foundation. Public School Renovations: Red Nose is affiliated with more than 30 national schools in North and South Jakarta. Red Nose surveys and evaluates its partner schools on a yearly basis in order to determine which schools are the most in-need of assistance. Once a school is identified as being in-need, Red Nose seeks an outside sponsor to help renovate, improve and beautify the schools learning facilities. Professionals do the renovations, but the school children, the Red Nose children and the sponsors all work together to do their bit by painting classrooms and completing other simple tasks. This builds a sense of ownership within the children and a sense of community and a sense of charity on behalf of the Red Nose children and the sponsors.

Formal Education System Support: Red Nose understands that in order to create systematic change, there must be a movement to improve the formal education system. While RNF has long-term goals to lobby for a creative and active learner based curriculum, our short-term goals include improving the childrens learning environment and equipping the teachers with the knowledge and skills they need to teach the curriculum that they are required to teach. Teacher Training: In 2014, RNF will begin creating and hosting teacher-training seminars to promote new, creative and activelearning teaching methods within schools to complement the current national curriculum. Also, in an attempt to introduce the concept of using circus to engage and teach children, RNF will work to share and pass on its knowledge and experience in circus skills to local teachers.
