Beginners Guide : Administering Oracle Application

Administrating Oracle application, its important to understand the core components. In oracle application, lets take some of them start with some of the

Responsibilities Menus Profile Options Concurrent Manager Securit Concepts

Responsibility

A responsibility defines and address these:

o o o

!hat functions a user can use !hat data a user can access !hat "#$Set of %ooks"# a user can access

&ormall in oracle application a "#$Set of %ooks"# describes as significant piece of the enterprise that has a different currenc , calendar, or chart of accounts

Is the top le'el in the hierarch that a responsibilit is assigned to

!hat "#$Organi(ation"# a user belongs to

An organi(ation is a sub)set of the "#$Set of %ooks"#, which is used to further restrict the data a user can access Multi)org ,which allows a subsidiar ledger, such as AP, to process in'oices that will reside in multiple sets of books. *sers normall are assigned to multiple responsibilities.

+he R,- there is concept called MOAC which describe the access o'er different O* le'el. !ill discuss this in details some other da .

Menus
o

A menu is a hierarchical arrangement of functions and menus of functions. .ach

responsibilit has a menu assig ned to it. /ou should take a note functionalit of a responsibilit can be customi(ed b modif ing the menu associated with the responsibilit .
o o

+he same menu can be used b man different Responsibilities. In oracle application, menus can not be copied. &ew menus ha'e to be built from scratch. !hile creating a new menu hierarch , create the lowest)le'el menus first. A menu must be defined before it can be selected as an entr on another menu. !hen a menu"#0s name is changed, the menu entries are not affected. Other menus calling the menu b its old name, automaticall call the same menu b its new name. Menu structure can be documented b printing a Menu Report.

Profile Options

+hese are a set of changeable options that affect the wa

our application runs.

+hese can be set at different le'el, from ,,.3.,4 there are 5 different le'el where ou can make take the options. 2urther control securit b assigning a set of books to a responsibilit ,Application,or Site. Set of books is a compan or group of companies that uses Oracle Applications that share a common Chart of Accounts,Currenc ,and Calendar.

Profiles are established at six different levels: ,. ite Site le'el profile 'alues are used when the profile option can ha'e onl one 'alue for the entire instance of Oracle. 6e7ample) .1I Input file path lets sa if the entire ser'er is using one director to accept inbound files from .1I,then ou would 8ust set the profile option at the site le'el, then it flows down to all le'els, and there is no need to set this at other le'els9. !" If ou are 'er new to oracle application , it should be noted that s stem Profile Options are set b the S stem Administrator and affect the beha'ior of the Application and its modules for e'er one. Personal Profile Options are set b the indi'idual user and co'er that indi'idual"#0s interaction with the s stem.

)oncurrent Manager
o

In Oracle Applications, concurrent processing simultaneousl e7ecutes programs running in the background with online operations. with s stem Administrator, ou

can manage when programs are run and how man operating s stem processes Oracle Applications de'otes to running programs in the background.
o

!hen a user runs a report, a re:uest to run the report is generated. +he command to run the report is a concurrent re:uest. +he program that generates the report is a concurrent program. Concurrent programs are started b a concurrent manager. .'er time our users re:uest a concurrent program to be run, their re:uest is inserted into a database table, and is uni:uel identified b a re:uest I1. Concurrent managers read re:uests from this table. Part of a manager;s definition is how man operating s stem processes it can de'ote to running re:uests. +his number is referred to as the manager;s number of target processes.

A concurrent program actuall starts running based on<

o o

!hen it is scheduled to start !hether it is placed on hold, !hether it is incompatible with other programs Its re:uest priorit

+he priorit of a concurrent re:uest is determined b application user name, and is set b the S stem Administrator using the Concurrent<Priorit user profile option. +he first a'ailable concurrent manager compares the re:uest;s priorit to other re:uests it is eligible to process, and runs the re:uest with the highest priorit . !hen choosing between re:uests of e:ual priorit , the concurrent manager runs the oldest re:uest first. Often, se'eral programs ma be grouped together, as in a re:uest set. Submitting the re:uest set as a whole generates a re:uest I1, and as each member of the set is submitted it recei'es its own re:uest I1. +he set;s re:uest I1 identifies the Parent re:uest, and each of the indi'idual programs; re:uest I1 identifies a Child re:uest.

ecurity )oncept

In oracle application securit can be classified in two broad area 'i(<

*atabase ecurity

.ach Oracle application module database ob8ects 6 tables, 'iews etc.,9 are owned b a different Oracle I1. 2or e7ample, all =eneral >edger ob8ects are owned b the Oracle I1 called =>, all Accounts Pa ables ob8ects are owned b AP and so on. All programs under a responsibilit are e7ecuted using these Oracle I1s. 2or e7ample, the =eneral >edger responsibilities use the => database user)id. Custom tables created to interface with Oracle Applications should be placed in a separate Oracle id to facilitate upgrading the application when necessar .

+unction ecurity
o

2unction securit is the mechanism b which user access to application functionalit is controlled. 2unction is a part of an application"#0s functionalit that is registered under a uni:ue name for the purpose of assigning it to, or e7cluding it from, a responsibilit . +wo t pes of functions< 2orm function 6 known as a form9 and non)form function 6 known as a sub)function9. A form function in'okes an Oracle 2orms form. 2orms appear in the &a'igate !indow and can be na'igated to. 2orms can e7ist on their own. A non)form function 6 sub)function9 is a function e7ecuted from within a form. +hese are fre:uentl associated with buttons or other graphical elements in the form. Sub)functions do not appear on the &a'igate window.
