Kiwanis Breakfast With Santa event set for Dec. 15

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER The Kiwanis Club of Germantown invites the public to its second annual Breakfast with Santa on Sunday, Dec. 15, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the American Legion Post 1, N120 W15932 Freistadt Road in Germantown. New this year, live reindeer will be joining Santa and Mrs. Claus to pose for pictures with the children in attendance. A professional photographer will be on hand or parents can bring their own cameras. Children will also receive gift bags from Santa and his helpers. This is a fun and unique part of the event and I think the kids will really enjoy it, said longtime Kiwanis member George Herro who is helping organize the breakfast. The menu will feature all-you-can-eat pancakes with toppings. Sausage, applesauce, coffee, milk and juice will also be provided. Students from the Germantown High School Key Club will serve the food. The Kiwanis-sponsored eventorganized with assistance from the Legion Post and the villages Tourism and Betterment Fundis just another way to raise funds and awareness for local youth programs, said Herro. We do everything with kids in mind, he said. All of our fundraisers are to help support kid-centered events and programs. Last years inaugural breakfast was held at The Gables; however, the crowd was larger than expected so a new location was chosen. It went very well and we were at capacity, Herro said of last years event. We expect another great turn-out this year. While spreading holiday cheer, the breakfast furthers a positive cause, he added.

Boys basketball: Warhawks win first two games

The Germantown boys basketball team kept a two-year winning streak unbroken following its first two games of the season. The two-time Division I champions opened the season with an 87-35 win over Milwaukee Lutheran Nov. 26. Lamonte Bearden led Germantown with 20 points while Brian Studer and Evan Wesenberg scored 16 points each. A week later the Warhawks beat Port Washington 81-41 in the home opener for Germantown. Jake Showalter led Germantown with 21 points while Bearden added 15 points.

Germantown HS band invited to 2014 event

The Germantown High School Band has been invited to perform in Washington, D.C. during Veterans Day week in 2014. During a presentation to the School Board Nov. 25, Band director James Barnes said the band is one of 10 nationwide that has been invited to perform during ceremonies marking the bicentennial of the "Star Spangled Banner," the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Europe and the 10th anniversary of the World War II Memorial. The tour will occur from Nov. 6-9, 2014. Barnes said the band will perform at the World War II Memorial. "It's going to be a wonderful opportunity for our students," he said. The cost of the trip is $874 per student and students will only miss two days of school. Travel, meals and a few other items will also be included in the cost, which is expected to remain under $1,000. "I think it's a great performance opportunity, a wonderful venue to be at," Barnes said. The item will be on the board for formal consideration at the Dec. 9 meeting In a separate item, the board approved a change in the credit offered for the "Cantanti" choir class at the high school. According to the class description, the class is open to sophomore through senior treble singers "who wish to more fully explore treble choral singing." In the past, the class has run in separate groups, with young men singing on alternate days for the young women. Under that format, students received a .25 credit as they were in study hall on the days they did not sing. The change approved by the board will have all students singing together for the semester. With students in class on all days, the credit will be increased to .5. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

Longtime local jeweler closing store after 34 years

Germantown and Milwaukee are losing a true artist and craftsman after 34 years of designing original one of a kind jewelry, Master Jeweler and Goldsmith Curtis Franklin is retiring and closing his Store, An Eye For Design Jewelry, due to health issues. Curtiss lifelong love of the jewelry and the jewelry business started early in high school. In high school he found he had a passion for the arts and especially the metal arts. He soon found himself working at the local jewelry store doing sketches of jewelry designs that customers had been looking to have made. He began working alongside a European trained goldsmith. That is where he honed his skills in wax carving, casting, soldering and setting techniques used to fabricate unique pieces of jewelry. After a few years he left to start his own store and has continued over the years challenging himself with new innovative designs along with learning to facet gemstones, which has led to Award winning designs that are on display in the store. One customer said that some of them look like they have stones inside of stone and were amazed at how unusual and beautiful these were. Curtis says he enjoyed his thirty four years serving his many customers and the community and will really miss them but the last few years have been difficult due to health issues and I can no longer work in the store on a regular basis. So it is with sadness, we made the choice to close the doors. Julie and I have enjoyed making life-long friends and consider many of them part of our extended family. For that reason, we have decided to have a short Going out Of Business Sale to say farewell and show our appreciation. I would rather give my friends and customers these great prices instead of selling it to a jewelry wholesaler and we hope to see everyone in the next few weeks and wish all a Happy Holiday and Merry Christmas!

Friends of Nature Celebrates 22 Years

riends of Nature recently celebrated its 22nd Anniversary. Established by Doug & Lynn Wilde in 1991 it has grown over the years from 1,000 sq. ft. to 12,000 ft. in the recently remodeled Pilgrim Village in Menomonee Falls. They added a second location in Slinger in 2000 and purchased Landmark Supply in Cedarburg in 2005. With the remodeling of the shopping center we also spruced up the inside of the store, adding new carpeting, ceiling tiles and lighting. Friends of Nature prides itself in having an extensive selection of holistic dog and cat foods. There have been many new foods introduced into the pet industry over the last few years and we try our best to

pick the cream of the crop. There is no one best food. Our advice is to buy the best food you can afford. Our staff is trained to help you make a decision based on the nutritional needs and life style of your pet. We have limited ingredient foods, grain free foods and many brands of frozen pet foods. We cant possibly stock every brand of food available but we can special order most of them and usually have it for you in a week or less. Friends of Nature also has a huge array of treats. We seek out as many American made treats as possible. Given the recent recalls on food and treats it is extremely important to read the labels to see where the items are sourced and

made. Since Friends of Nature is a full service pet specialty store we have the feed and supplies for every type of pet such as birds, reptiles, fish and small furry critters. We also carry fresh water tropical and salt water fish. Friends of Nature is also known far and wide as the place to go for wild bird seed, feeders and accessories. We have the largest variety of wild bird seed in three counties and hundreds of bird feeders. We also have squirrel and wildlife food. We have a knowledgeable and dedicated staff to help you make an informed decision on your pet or wildlife purchases so dont hesitate to ask for their help.

Benedons, Inc in Menomonee Falls is a full-service pawnbroker

Benedon's Inc is a licensed pawnbroker located on Appleton Avenue in Menomonee Falls. What is a pawn? Pawn is the process of using collateral to obtain a loan. When you sell your items to someone, that is NOT considered a pawn, it is a simple sale. Many businesses who buy things advertise under PAWN in the Yellow Pages or online, but they ONLY purchase, they do NOT lend. These companies are not pawnbrokers. They merely bait you into coming in with your belongings and try to buy them. We get calls on a regular basis asking "Are you a REAL pawn shop that does loans? We are such a business. Businesses can ONLY aLEND money with special licensing. In Wisconsin, the maximum a local pawnbroker with municipality licensing can give is limited to $150 by statute. Further licensing is required for a pawnbroker to give larger loans. We do hold such a license. A pawn loan is for a period of 30 days (a legal month) and are calculated that way, per diem. Interest is required on a monthly basis and the loan can be renewed for up to one year, maximum again, by statute. Chuck Benedon has been a gold and diamond dealer for over 35 years. Having traveled to the world's trade centers for various jewelry products, Chuck has always brought great deals to his loyal following of clients. He is an expert diamond evaluator, having visited Antwerp, Belgium and Tel-Aviv, Israel over 60 times on diamond-buying trips. Hong Kong, Naples and Rome, Italy and Columbia are some of the other places where Chuck has manufactured or imported products from over the years. We are a family operation and we LEND MORE and CHARGE LESS than any other pawn shop in Milwaukee. If you're looking for a short term loan, give us a call at (262) 2933990. Benedon's opened at Colonial Plaza four years ago and is now located at the old home of Maxwell Photography, which they bought last year. They've quadrupled the size of their operation to accommodate the large amount of collectibles and other valuables they've been purchasing from around the area. From odds and ends collectibles to high end watches, Benedon's is full of antiques, watches and refurbished jewelry priced lower than manufacturing cost. "You'll find serious bargains with real value," owner Chuck Benedon said. It's a family affair A career diamond importer and jewelry wholesaler for over 35 years, Chuck opened up his pawn shop/buying office when he "got tired of traveling." "It was fun in the beginning and a great learning experience," Benedon said. "But after more than 100 trips abroad and even more domestically, it got old. I decided to slow that down and stay closer to my family." Sam Benedon, a music student at Milwaukee Area Technical College, manages the music department at Benedon's, which is filled with guitars and amps. Sam gives lessons on Saturdays and has built a number of electric and acoustic guitars and does set instrument setup. In need of a good guitar or amp for the holidays? Stop in and see Sam. Services Benedon's Inc. is a licensed, bonded and insured operation providing short term loans up to $10,000. Benedon's lends more than other similar shops and charges less. When buying your old jewelry, Benedon's also claims to pay more than any other like business in the entire Milwaukee area. "Shop around and compare," Chuck tells his potential clients. "It will be worth your time. It's not uncommon to find we pay double what others do, particularly for diamonds." Sam, Bruce and Chuck are all musicians, as is Sam's sister, Tessa. Tessa is a percussionist at UW-Whitewater and is a guitarist/singer as well. Benedon's offers precious metals brokerage and buys jewelry, watches, diamonds, precious metals and scrap. Price look up:

Chuck, the owner of Benedons pawnshop in Menomonee Falls, wishes you a Happy Holiday. Don't want to pay an online subscription to find out what your item is worth? Bring it to Benedon's and they'll help you. They are knowledgeable in many areas and have subscriptions to the informational websites that show these sales values. "As a pawn shop, we attempt to help people with smaller short term money issues when bank money is not available for any reason. Credit checks are not necessary," owner Chuck Benedon said. New at Benedon's Benedon's now holds a Federal Firearms License and makes loans on all firearms.

Kindy Optical offers unique hands-on approach, decades of experience

With 30 years in optical industry, Menomonee Falls residents Don and Deb Galle relish every moment they spend servicing their cherished community, and their Kindy Optical store is just as much a gathering of friends as it is a business. "We're always in touch with our customers and we enjoy that," said Deb. "Not a day goes by that we don't have a hand in things. Customers come directly to us, not a corporation, with questions and issues." Voted in July as the Sterling franchises "Emerging Vision Store of the Year," the storewhich recently moved to a bigger location at N82 W15340 Appleton Ave.brings to the community the unique aspect of having opticians rather than an optometrist run the store, which gives everything a "whole different flow," said Deb. "We put a lot of time and energy into making sure our customers get the perfect frames," said Deb, who creates the many selections using state-ofthe-art equipment. "On any given day, we have more than 3,000 frames available. We offer a good mixfrom high-quality, 14-karat gold overlay frames with crystals to family-friendly options. We have something for everyone. The businesswhich also provides contact lenses, polarized sunglasses and accessorieshas an on-site optometrist who handles the eye exams. The Galles then work as a team to bring the product from start to finish, having the glasses ready the same day they are purchased. Don makes the glasses and does all the edging and I choose the styles on the floor, said Deb. It is such an easy and efficient way to do things. The owners take great pride in specializing in servicing hard-to-fit customers who have trouble finding their ideal pair of glasses or getting their specific needs met. You hear so many optical nightmares out there and a lot of those more difficult situations are sent to us, said Deb. "For example, this morning we had a two-year-old referred to us by Children's Hospitalwhich is a huge compliment, because they trust usimmediately followed by a 100-year-old woman in a wheelchair. Its such a blessing to work with these individuals. When customers enter the store, they know right away they will have a positive experience, Deb said. We have a great staff and there is a lot of humor involved, and customers can feel that energy right away," she said. "We run a tight ship and everyone knows what they're doing, but we're also relaxed and we have fun. The couplewho moved from Stevens Point to the village 23 years ago to open their storealso enjoy giving back to the community they are proud to call home. Although both of their children have graduated from Menomonee Falls High School, the Galles continue to sponsor various sporting programs such as Little League, wrestling and many more. We support many youth and high school sports, said Deb. Describing their new location as gorgeous and much bigger than our previous store, Deb said she and her husband are thrilled to be able to provide an attractive and comfortable location for their The staff at Kindy Optical wishes everyloyal customers. one happy holidays. From left, Jenna, Deb, Don and Deedee. We just love our community; we love Menomonee Falls, she said. The people are so honest and friendly and easy to work with. That makes all the difference. Business hours are 9:30 to 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 9:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The store is closed Sunday. Culver's celebrates milestone of 20 years in the Falls

A lot has changed in the 20 years since Ray and Kim Nelson opened their first Culver's Frozen Custard in Menomonee Falls. "Everything is dramatically different," Kim said. "When we opened our store (located at W186 N9581 Bancroft Drive, Highway Q) on Dec. 9, 1993, there was almost nothing on that side of town. That area has undergone a tremendous transformation." In the last two decades, the beloved restauranthome of the signature ButterBurgerhas become a community favorite. "We have people who came here 20 years ago who still come here today," Kim shared. "Some of the kids who worked here for us as teenagers now bring their own kids here to eat. It's so cool to see them and talk to them." It's this spirit of camaraderie that keeps alive the popularity of an eatery that first opened in Sauk City, Wis. in 1984 and has since expanded to 489 stores nationwide. After opening the Menomonee Falls location, the Nelsons also obtained stores in West Bend, Sussex, Hartford and Port Washington. With both Ray and Kim having backgrounds in the restaurant business, this was the perfect fit for them, Kim said. "We had the entrepreneurial spirit and some connections in the Culver's company, as well as some very positive experiences as guests at the restaurant, she explained. We also had conversations with owners at the original Culver's, so we pursued this avenue for ourselves. Weve just always really enjoyed the business and the people." Tradition continues as two of the couple's three children are also part of the Culver's team. "Our oldest son was eight weeks old when we opened our first restaurant," Kim said. "Our kids have literally grown up in the business." While the famous ButterBurger always made fresh from 100 percent Midwest-raised beef is a major draw, the menu also features a wide variety of sandwich, salad and other food selections. But its the custardproduced in Wisconsin and made fresh all daythat brings in the crowds, noted Kim. "It's very interesting," she said. "Even though we have a lot of guests during lunch and dinner, the 7 p.m. to close custard rush can be even busier. People just love it. And two decades later, the guests keep coming. "We would like to thank the community for supporting us all these years," said Kim. This whole journey has been wonderful. Culver's is open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. most of the year, but closes at 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday during the winter. To reach the business or for more information, call (262) 2557718 or visit www.culvers.com.

An old friend of Bob Baer's once gave him a piece of wood cut into a circle that was nailed to the wall in the back room printed on the wood in black marker were the words "ROUND-TO-IT". Denzil (Dan) Baer passed Dan's Tog Shop to his son Bob so he could retire slowly, work part time there and spend winters in Florida. Bob made the store his life, putting off retirement because he never got "round-to-it". His daughter Robin worked for him since high school, eventually running Robins Nest for the last 30 years. Bob never passed the store down to Robinhe never got "roundto-it". In May 2013 Bob went from the store to the hospital and died five weeks later. Robin felt Dan's Tog Shop couldn't go forward without him so she donated the remaining mens clothes to a veterans organization in town. What did get passed down to Robin was a strong sense of promoting and serving the village of Menomonee Falls. She has taken that attitude to heart and expanded it to every customer entering Robins Nest. She and her staff continue to offer the service, knowledge, variety of brands and good humor you've come to expect over

the yearsplus Sally's homemade cookies! Customers often request the recipe of the week. Now there's more room to show the many styles and sizes (new plus size rack) of clothing, jewelry and purses available. Pendleton, Neon Buddha, Comfy, Icelandic and Tribal clothing as well as Pandora jewelry store-within-a-store status. Brighton, Baggallini and Vera Bradley keep

customers returning to become friends (and for the cookies). If you drive by the storejust east of the falls on Main St. you'll still see the Dan's Tog Shop sign up. Robin was going to take it down but so farshe just hasn't gotten "round-to-it". Enjoy this recipe from a Vera Bradley cookbook and a favorite at the Nest.

For all your music needs, come to Wondersound Music

Wondersound music has grown by leaps and bounds in its first 17 months in business. Owners Jeff and Sarah Holmes took a little lesson house whose retail life was long since gone and turned it into the newest destination music store in northwest Milwaukee. With a large selection of beginner, student and intermediate instruments to choose from, players from all over are coming in and making their selves at home. The layout was designed to feel like your hanging out in you favorite rock star's living room. It does not disappoint. No only has the retail operation taken off, but the education program has grown significantly. With more teachers and new exciting programs, Wondersound is covering the gambit. From the licensed Kindermusik program for toddlers to the 13 teachers teaching over 15 disciplines and the return of Rock U, Wondersound Music is a busy place. For those who don't remember, Rock U is an eight week course for future rock stars from 12 to 18 culminating in a live rock show here in the Falls. Last St Patrick's day 150 people showed up to AJ's Live to see the show. The biggest growth has been the band instrument rental program. Wondersound has partnered up with Melk Music of West Allis to bring reasonably priced, high quality instruments to town. In the first season they are working with families from Menomonee Falls, Sussex Hamilton, Milwaukee, Brown Deer, and Germantown school districts saving them as much as 40% over their past supplier. Wondersound has become one of those business that has seen the spark of hometown support grow into a fire that's catching on.

Shop Robert M Jewelers this holiday season

Robert M. Jewelers is the longest established jewelry store in the Menomonee Falls/Germantown area, having been in business for more than 46 years. In January this family-owned business will celebrate one year at their new location in the Crossroads at Bancroft shopping center, just south of Culvers and west of JC Penney. The new store provides up-close parking and easy access in a highly visible location next to Mancinos Restaurant. Robert M. Jewelers was first established in Menomonee Falls in 1967 by husband and wife, Robert and Pat. In 1981 their son Martin joined the business as the goldsmith. For 32 years he has been creating and repairing jewelry, and is GIA certified. The fact that this business is family-owned and operated has been a primary reason for the success of Robert M. The business has many regular customers who have been shopping there for 20, 30 and even 40 years. In addition, new customers are drawn to Robert M. Jewelers because they have heard about their honest and trustworthy reputation. Robert M. Jewelers moved to their current location in the Crossroads and Bancroft shopping center in Menomonee Falls in January 2013. The business was originally located on the four corners (next to the Kentucky Fried Chicken for those of you who remember it) in downtown Menomonee Falls. From 1977 to 1987 the business was located on Appleton Avenue in the North Hills Plaza Shopping Center. After 25 years as a fixture in the Crossroads Shopping Center, Pick N Save opted to move their store to the center of the shopping center, necessitating that Robert M. move their location once again. The new store has a welcoming atmosphere. You can find almost anything at Robert M. Jewelers from watches to diamond rings, pendants, earrings and bracelets, colored stone rings, and engagement and wedding rings. Baby gifts, decorative wall clocks, the ever-popular bead bracelets and beads and much more. The staff will also provide those special touches you wont find everywhere, such as free gift wrapping of your special gift or free jewelry inspection and cleaning. Robert M. Jewelers also provides jewelry and watch repair, engraving and appraisal services. All repair service is completed on the premises by Martin in a shop area which was specifically designed for customers to view Martins work. Martin prides himself on being able to repair many jewelry items which customers have told him they were unable to get repaired or restored elsewhere. Many customers have expressed how very pleased they were to have their sentimental piece of jewelry restored. As the jewelry business has changed in recent years, Robert M. Jewelers has adapted and made changes as well. At Robert M. they strive to keep overhead low and that translates into very reasonable prices on merc handise and repair services. Robert M. has been buying used gold and silver jewelry for the past five years. Their payout prices are very competitive and you can watch as your gold is weighed and calculated based on that days gold price. One of the most exciting new features at Robert M. in the past five years is the variety of estate and consignment jewelry for sale. Customers will find some real bargains on some very nice items with new pieces added almost daily. Only items that are in almost new condition are accepted and a fair price is paid out to those who leave their items on consignment once the item is sold. Many of Robert M. customers have followed them from one location to another for the simple reason that they enjoy the comfortable atmosphere and friendly service as well as the reasonable prices. Many new customers have found their way to Robert M. by hearing about the jewelry store from friends, family or neighbors. Robert M. Jewelers best form of advertising has always been word of mouth. Stop in this holiday season to see whats new at Robert M. Jewelers. For more information about all of your jewelry needs, call 262-251-9103.
