Lesson Title: Music & Poetry CCGPS Connections: ELACC8RL10: By the end of the year, read and comprehend

d literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, at the high end of grades 6-8 text complexity band independently and proficiently ELACC8W4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 13 above.) ELACC8W10: Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences. ELACC8SL6: Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate. (See grade 8 Language standards 1 and 3 for specific expectations.) Learning Objectives: The learner will write poetry on a given topic with 90% accuracy. The learner will adapt speech and volume appropriately when reading with 90% accuracy. The learning will collaborate with classmates to develop a single product with 100% accuracy. Purpose of Lesson: The purpose of this lesson is for students to write and present poetry through participating in a classroom poetry slam. Implementation: Student Activity: Introduction: Write in journal. Topic: What do rap music and poetry have in common? Is the rap that you just heard an example of poetry? Why or why not? Instructor Activity: Play short clip of Macklemores Same Love. Explain that rap and poetry each have rhythm, sometimes rhyme, and can be read to a beat, citing To This Day as an example of poetry spoken to a beat. Remind students that emotion is conveyed through word choice and also through inflection in speaking. Give examples of how inflection changes meaning. Play Stop Bullying Rap video as an example. Observe students while completing task. Answer questions or give assistance as needed. Use rubric to assess student performances.

Body:

Work in groups to write an anti-bullying rap. Rehearse performance. Perform anti-bullying rap with each student presenting at least one verse.
