Dressed for an excursion to the North Pole, the first crew of Block of Bucks collectors was out early this morning before the sun was trying to make an appearance. At left, Cottonwood employees were working on getting the patio heater fired up, and that was even proving to be a bit of a challenge in the frigid air (47 below wind chill at 7:30 this morning according to the National
Weather Service). Crews will be collecting until 5:00 this evening. Shopping takes place Saturday morning. Volunteer shoppers are asked to arrive at the Odd Fellows Hall at 8:45 a.m. and parents should report there at 9:00. Due to the extreme cold temperatures, it was decided that the children do not have to attend; it is still required that parents show up.

There are 3 million licensed amateur radio operators worldwide, which is less than 0.04% of the global population. In sharp contrast, 6 billion people (88%) have access to a mobile (cellular) phones and soon, there will be more cell phones in operations than there will be people on earth to use them. Compared to these figures, amateur radio operators are indeed a very small, almost insignificant minority, and telecommunications companies raking in billions in profits every year want to keep it that way. Worldwide, out of those 3 millions licensed amateur radio operators, Japan sits at the top of the list with almost 1.3 million operators, followed closely by the United-States, Canada being in 7th place on the chart. The average age of Amateur radio operators is 67 years old and that number keeps increasing every year. About 15% of operators are women and 85% are men. In some countries, you wont find an amateur radio operator younger than 80 years old. People who obtained their operator license in the 1960s and 1970s constitute the majority of operators today and would explain the mature age of operators. No wonder this hobby was very popular in the 60-70s, as it was the Internet of its era! Amateur radio is the only failsafe communication system left in the world.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a Victors Tour of the districts. Along the way, Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) -- a competition that could change Panem forever.

OBITUARY
Dustin Bietz Dustin Jeffrey Bietz, age 31, passed away from complications of a stem cell transplant in Billings, Montana on December 2, 2013. He was surrounded by many people who loved him and in the arms of his loving wife and son. Service will be held on Monday, December 9, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Glasgow, Montana. Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Dustin was born on March 30th, 1982 in Bismarck, North Dakota to Jeff and Kathy (Wold) Bietz. He grew up in Beulah, North Dakota where he was involved in many sports including basketball, baseball, softball, football and golf. Dustin was very competitive. He had numerous friends growing up and was always doing something spontaneous. He had a free spirit and loved everyone. His care-free, positive attitude wore off on anyone around him. Dustin also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family; especially his Dad. They took a trip to the Bietz family farm to hunt the opening weekend in November every year. Another favorite pastime was going to McClusky with his cousin Mitch and Uncle Pat. He enjoyed going to the lake and hanging out with friends whenever possible. He graduated from Beulah High School in 2000 and decided to further his education at Minot State University. There he played college golf and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Computer Management Systems and an Associate Degree in Business Management. He worked for Wells Fargo before landing his dream job with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad as a Conductor. In 2006 he met the love of his life, Samantha Koski, and they were married on September 10th, 2011. They have two beautiful children; a son Tayven Jeffrey who is four and a daughter Oakleigh Faye who turned one year on December 7th. Dustin was the strongest, most loving person who never gave up. Even being diagnosed with leukemia couldnt bring him down. Through the hardest times in his life he still showed strength, compassion, optimism, humor, love, and loyalty. Dustin was given a battle that no one should ever have to fight, but he fought with pure determination to win. Dustin was preceded in death by his grandparents Arlee and Diane (Romer) Wold and an uncle Mike Wold. He is survived by his wife Samantha (Koski) Bietz, a 4 year old son Tayven and a 1 year old daughter Oakleigh, all of Glasgow, his parents Jeff and Kathy (Wold) Bietz of Beulah, North

Every year on December 1, people around the world recognize World AIDS Day. This annual event is an opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services, and stamp out the stigma wrongly associated with HIV. This year, World AIDS Day is being celebrated with events throughout Montana, the nation, and the globe. This years theme is Getting to zero: zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS related deaths. While the World AIDS Day theme is global in nature, we must also address it on the local level. Leadership in the fight against AIDS starts in families, schools, workplaces, places of worship, health care settings, and elective offices. Together our collective voices can help. All of us can take the lead. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. In Montana, 586 people are living with HIV or AIDS, and 16-31 new cases are diagnosed each year. HIV may not grab the headlines anymore like it did at the height of the epidemic in the 1980s, but it does threaten lives and loved ones right here in Montana. This devastating disease has taken the lives of more than 400 Montanans since 1985, and continues to debilitate the lives of those living with HIV and their families. What steps can you take? First, learn your HIV status. An estimated 1.2 million Americans are living with HIV, but one out of five doesnt know it. A new website, www.GetCheckedMt.com, lists testing locations around the state so it is easy to find the nearest place to get tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Approximately 56,000 Americans are infected with HIV each year and half of them are teenagers. Be sure to talk to your doctor about ways to reduce your risk of contracting HIV, like practicing safer sex. Help to educate members of your community about how the disease is transmitted and how it can be prevented. Testing is easy and can be done by either a mouth swab or a finger stick. This test takes only 20 minutes for results. When a positive test is found, this is called a positive preliminary test. Blood work would then be sent to the state lab for confirmation results. If you would like to make an appointment for testing or if you have a question regarding fees please ask to speak to a nurse. The phone number for Valley County Health Department is 228-6261. One reason people do not seek out HIV testing is a concern over confidentiality. The health department wants you to know when clients call in they can remain anonymous.
