RC = 1k , and = 270.

Figure 1: A common emitter amplier is shown above. Let VCC = 5V , VT = 26mV , IS = 26.03f A, VA = 90.7V ,

1. A common emitter amplier is shown in Figure 1. Answer the following: (a) For this transistor draw a graph, on the space provided in Figure 2, of IC versus VCE for VBE equal to 600mV , 620mV , 640mV , 660mV , 680mV , and 700mV . Be careful in drawing this graph as it will be used in answering some of the questions below. Assume the boundary between deep saturation and forward active occurs at VCE = 400mV . You can use a piecewise linear model for this graph. (b) On the same graph, draw the load line for RC in this circuit. (c) Using the intersection points, draw a graph (also on the space provided in Figure 3) of VOU T versus VIN . What is this graph useful for?

(d) What is the gain for VIN = 650mV ? What is the region of operation of the transistor?

2. Now that we have analyzed the large signal properties of the amplier, let us analyze some of its small-signal properties. Assume VIN = 650mV for the rest of the prelab. (a) Draw the small signal model of the amplier.

(b) Calculate the following (be sure to include the Early eect): i. Output voltage VOU T

ii. Collector current IC

iii. Transconductance gm

iv. Output impedance ROU T

v. Input impedance RIN

vi. Gain AV . Does this gain match your answer in question 1(d)?

(c) If the bias point changes, which of the above properties will change(answer completely)?

3. Let us explore what happens when we change the bias point by adding a load resistor. (a) If a load of 5k is added to the output of the circuit, intuitively, how do you think this will aect the gain and why?

(b) Draw the new load line on the graph you made for question 1(a) (be sure to label which load line goes with which question). (c) If we keep the same bias point (i.e., the same VBE value), is the transistor still in forward active mode?

(d) What happens to the gain? How about the output voltage swing?
maximum and minimum values of

Note:

The output voltage swing is the

vOU T

for which all transistors stay in forward active.

(e) Again, keeping the same bias point, what is the load resistance value for which the BJT begins to transition between forward active mode and deep saturation (i.e., where VCE = 400mV )?
