from a LPAR
This document describes the procedure to dynamically remove or move an I/O adapter or a DVD
drive from one LPAR to another LPAR.
Note: To dynamically move or remove an adapter from an LPAR, the adapter should be defined
as desired in the active profile of that LPAR.
The example below illustrates the removal of SCSI card and DVD drive attached to it from the
LPAR taapup03.
1) The SCSI adapter to which DVD drive is connected should be defined as a desired device in
the LPAR profile properties.
In this example, LPAR taapup03 has a DVD drive assigned to it. The DVD drive is connected to
a SCSI Storage controller that is placed at PCI slot U5791.001.99B076N-P2-C10. The device at
this slot is defined as a desired device.
This SCSI storage controller is defined as a desired device in taapup03 LPAR properties. If the
device at slot U5791.001.99B076N-P2-C10 is not defined as desired device then uncheck the
required box at that slot and save the changes.
Login in to LPAR that has this DVD drive. In this example it is taapup03.
#lsslot -c slot
Note down the PCI slot and device name for the SCSI Storage controller. In this example the
device name for slot U5791.001.99B076N-P2-C10 on which SCSI storage controller is placed is
pci7. Ensure there is no HDD’s connected to the same PCI bus.
You can cross verify that the DVD drive is connected to pci7 and sisscsia0 controller by finding
out the child devices of pci7 and siscsia0 SCSI storage controller.
You can see in this output that the pci7 is parent device for sisscsia0 (Storage controller) which
In turn is parent device for cd0 (DVD drive)
Once you have verified that the DVD drive is connected to pci7 slot, the next step is to remove
the device definition of cd0, sisscsia0 and pci7 from this LPAR.
This command would remove pci7 and all it child devices like sisscsia0 and cd0
Using HMC, right click on the LPAR and select dynamic logical partitioning physical
adapter resources move
On next screen,
In this case the slot to be moved from LPAR taapup03 is U5791.001.99B076N-P2-C10 and
LPAR to receive slot is adcapsap02.
Click OK.
This would dynamically move the slot and devices attached to the slot from LPAR
taapup03 to LPAR adcapsap02.
