Crooks, a junior at the University of Mary Washington expected this to be like her other brief visits; a quick meeting with the doctor, a prescription for pain medication, and advice to slow down and limit her anxiety. She was sadly mistaken. I was in intensive care for two days and in the hospital for four. They [the doctors] found two large [blood] clots in my leg and in my lung, says Crooks. The clots left Crooks unable to walk and in horrible pain. As she lay in intensive care it was revealed that she could have died from the severity of her condition. The doctors told me that if the clot in my lung were to break off, it could have killed me. I was scared, my mom was scared, my boyfriend didnt know what to do. I was just scared.

While millions of Americans hit the gym three and four times a week, theres a new wave of workouts in town. Maybe running on a sometimes boring treadmill is not for you. Machines may not tickle your workout fancy. Hit the mat, the bar and the studio to try new forms of fitness that are taking the country by stormproviding the perfect balance of mind, body, and spirit while giving people young an old, that confidence boost they need. A 2008 study done by Yoga Journal states that at least 20.4 million Americans are practicing different forms of yoga. Why you ask? Many are drawn to this art form because it provides an overall sunnier outlook on life. Studies show that simply one hour of asanas a sequence of standing, sitting, and balancing poses help raise yogis levels
of brain chemical GABA (low levels of this are linked to depression.) Yoga has also been linked to the disappearance of body aches and better sleep. Simply doing 45-minutes of yoga before bed allow individuals to relax, and turn off the active brain therefore sinking into a deeper sleep. Yoga practice has also been linked to reduced anxiety, increase body awareness, and steamier s-e-x. For these reasons alone, you should hit the mat. Dumbells arent the only way to tone & sculpt. Yoga involves poses that challenge and use body weight to move from posture to posturedive down into a chaturanga, and catch the wave. If its not hitting the mat, then hit the bardance bar that is. If nothing else the first positive benefit of dance, is the confidence boost it provides. Noth-
ing can be more embarrassing than conquering unknown dance moves in front of a class full of strangers. However, as you progress in your class whether it be Ballet or Zumba you will feel more confident and be a dancing machine in no time. Aside from this even 2 dance classes a week can help to build and tone muscle, while also improving your posture, grace, and rhythm. Some forms of dance focus on lengthening your body, which in turn lengthen your spine and correct posture issues. Even if its not ballet, hip-hop, jazz, belly dancing, or even a pole-dancing class can give you that mid-week breather from class and work that you so long forwhile sculpting you into the body that you desire, or toning the body that you have.
