Skimming for the main idea Read the following article quickly, then write down the main idea of each paragraph. It will be argued that it is right, every country and in every society - to give sport, games, and physical recreation an ample place in the curricula of schools and colleges. The reasons for this view are as follows: Boys and girls learn their lessons easily, take in new knowledge and understand new ideas more readily, if their daily program includes periods of sport and physical exercise which they enjoy. As Coubertin said the time given to sport iss not lost; it pays a big dividends in the greater ability to absorb and retain what they are taught. Time given to sport improves the general health of the pupils, and thus reduces the number of schooldays lost through illness and disability of various kinds. This claim has likewise been established by scientific research. The playing of organized team games make boys and girls understand: The necessity for the rules of the game, and their duty to observe the rules; Their duty to accept the authority of the refree, and never to dispute his decision; Their duty to cooperate with the other members of their team, in order to secure victory for their side Their duty to respect the authority of the captain of their team, and to help him to maintain a good team spirit. Their duty to treat their opponents with respect, and to maintain the highest standard of friedly fair play. Whe they play games, these lessons become part of the thinking of boys and girls. This happens, in great, subconsciously, but none the less effectively for that. Sport-games, swimming, athletics require will-power, endurance, the readiness to sacrifice ones own interest for the interest of the side. It may thus play apart in strengthening the characters, as well as the bodies and the brain, of boys and girls. Such matches and competition excite keen interest, not only in the members of the school teams, but also among the teahers and other pupils, a sentiment of loyalty to the school, and of pride in its achievements.The interest in sport does not fade when the pupils leave school. On the contrary, the ex-pupils follow the sporting achievements of their school through their lives. This helps to make their school a permanent influence in their

thinking. Physical education can help to make such instruction in world citizenship a thrilling interest to the young people. Questions Answer the following questions briefly. 1. The verbs used in the above pattern indicate non physical perception. The verbs used are: catch; find; get; imagine; keep; leave; set; set; and start Passive Construction: He saw a player of football running around the field. Daily runs or walks at a comfortble, steady pace over increasingly longer distance ( to a point) have the most positive effect on your health, and lay the foundation for other styles of training and even for competitive running. Aerobic training improves the health of the internal organs in general, and the efficiency of cardiovascular system specifically. It strengthens the heart and blood vessels, makes the capillary beds more responsive and improves muscular respiration. This means that oxygen and nutrients are delivered to the working muscles more efficiently and work waste products are carried away from the muscles more quickly. You can exercise, work, or play greater ease. You can enjoy life more and more productive with less effort.
