metaphysics of the urban landscape

by Chiara Buzzi
Metaphysics of the urban landscape is a visual, cultural and existential research Gabriele Croppi has carried on for several years and it is still in progress. When we look at his landscapes we leave for an endless and jealously private trip. For the collective imaginary they are wellknown places, famous for historical vicissitudes, cultural excellences, generosity of architectures and social deformations. Almost like infiltrators, the Piedmont views clash with the stunning monumental nature of certain Manhattan and Brooklyn Avenues. Yet, not everything we see exists in reality and belongs to those places. Something disturbs us. Probably it is a detail? It is not a specific object that stains the image. What about that cloud? I remembered it differently. The views sometimes visions of the artist originate from a meticulous and careful research path, from a critical awarness which has formed through the meeting-clash with the elements of a territory, of a history, from similar or tragically opposite cultures. They result from a stratification of meanings, allusions, thoughts and theories that once they are combined form a dense but still free image. They are open images. An invitation to reading and to interpreting

that allows those who approach to shuffle the cards and again to multiply the pictures sense. Images oscillate between reality and fiction, allegory and metaphor and inevitably constitute the corpus of an artistic metaphysical research. This precise matrix distinguishes Croppis photography right from his initial analogical works like Borges Y Yo or Fughe. As a doctrine that studies the fundamental and absolute principles of reality and the universal structure of being, metaphysics pushes us over the limits of sensitive experience, beyond appearances. The overcoming of the art work physical borders and therefore of the represented image is the authors research drive. The mechanic automatism of the camera and the photographers creativity start an infinite dialectic of references, quotations, points of view and distortions where what we actually see on the final print is just a small part. Of what? Of a choice. Of subjectivity by the onlookers viewpoint from where it is not possible to abstract. A piece of a far horizon, of an infinitesimal portion of a sand grain, of a dimension that progressively detaches from Piemontesi 60-61, Presbyterian Church or Lexington Avenue towards other places, people and cultures. The dialectical image is an image that lightens Benjamin writes in 1939 in one of his fragments on Baudelaire. One year later, in the Preparatory Materials of the theses he states The dialectical image is a spherical lightning that runs above the whole past horizon It delimits a private space, a Bildraum that characterizes its double temporality of integral actuality and of opening from every side of the time1. Croppis urban scenarios call for slowness: the observation must conduct to unknown places sometimes secret places where ash has not cooled down yet and the image is still burning. This type of photography requires time, patience of looking and a certain ability to hold back the greed, in order to fully possess the image and to contain the risk of destroying it. From his poetics it emerges a particular sign. A European matrix, a feeling of being part of a culture as much as of a territory that has grown soaked in doctrines, sciences, techniques and which allows, through the porosity of physical and mental borders, a metaphysical approach to both life and art. To the individual and towards society. To the atheist and towards the believer. Photography is a place of work, a structured and structuring space in which the artist uses many expressive codes to let it communicate its contents, to evoke

other meanings and to produce sense. From Time Square to Asti, from Lexington Avenue to Milan, travelling through Oslo, Moscow, Paris and Hamburg. The strong contrast of the black and white prints acts as the chiaroscuro used by many painters and sculptors in the past centuries. It exalts the full forms as well as the empty spaces and it gives prominence to the light sources. For Croppi, urban architecture plays a fundamental role in the construction of the image. On the one hand it is realistic, a document that is nothing more that the analogical transposition of what is framed in the target. On the other hand, the hyperrealism of the detail added in postproduction let us mute in front of an image that remains suspended between our attempt to decline its sense and its evocative power. The coexistence of both these dimensions highlights the reality presumption character of this work. An element that in time has become a signature style, an author mark. Moreover, this artist is not independent from the past cultural heritages and from the classical taste of the past centurys paintings: sticking to traditional aesthetical rules, Gabriele Croppis work wants to appear as the pure representation of what we see. Here, reality shows up for what it is. It is exactly here that misunderstand arises: in the attempt of trying to be believable, Metaphysics of the urban landscape lies. Photographys credibility doesnt lie completely in its visible characteristics, but not even completely into some external guarantee2. To the contrast, the alienating metaphysical atmosphere of these images results empowered and steadier. Painting and cinema sign solemnly the authors images, which often seem like pictorial compositions or veritable theatrical sets. The industrialized city by Sironi returns in his urban interpretations as a demonstration of the European civilization. De Chiricos paintings weight for the uncanny, the spatial incongruity and the classical style which reflect in a conscious manner. An out of space and out of time dimension, which turns on the metaphysical climate of these urban fragments, extracts of the city which recall Hoppers metaphysical realism. The narrative power of his images made of alone, bored and melancholic individuals as much as the cinematographic construction of elements, figures, shadows and lights, stimulate the artist in being equally dense and cinematic. To some extents, his poetics recalls Magrittes and Rousseaus, absorbing Pessoas unrest and esotericism as well as the secrecy that surrounds Kafkas tales. In The Castle and The Process the meticulous and pragmatic writing seems to conceal something, to omit details. This absence disorients for its

inscrutability and its transcendence from reality, where it nestles the metaphysical component of our existence. Likewise, the truth and the frankness of cities like Milan, Stockholm, Oslo and Moscow within Croppis photographs leave something un-said and invisible. The places look more than real; however, the atmosphere is enigmatic, time is fleeting and landscapes are nearly uncanny. The instant in which the photo is realized is a temporal instant that sparks into the images subject, becoming its intrinsic and indivisible part. Gabriele Croppi loves working with space and time unities; answering to the state of suspension of an event temporalized the artist sets the necessary conditions for the photographic image to accept different themes and degrees of signification. Through a process of digital postproduction very respectful of the subject when it is used the artist acts for subtraction, strengthening the symbolic position of the present elements and looking for the compositions neatness and essentiality. It is also thanks to these reasons that Croppi affirms himself as an artist contemporary of his time, aware of the historical and cultural context where he works. Making pictures with a digital camera, working with pixels and the prodigious Photoshop does not mean betraying either the identity of photography or the role of the photographer. Perhaps they are attempts to confer, once again, to this practice an expressive potential, a cultural and aesthetic role. Metaphysics is what I have written in these paragraphs and what the artist shows you. It is what others will tell you and what you will decide to find and to see. The image is a threshold. Its subject is the access to the endless metaphysical peregrinations of the being.

contenuti, evocarne altri e generare senso.
