RESOLUTION 0032-1314

A Resolution Requesting the Office of Mission and Ministry to Institutionalize a University Intramurals Committee WHEREAS, stated in Article III, Section I, of the 2005 XU-CSG Constitution, the XU-CSG shall be the highest seat of student governance of Xavier University. Its officers shall represent its constituents in all university bodies and other association, both within and outside of the campus, which directly affect the students welfare and interests. WHEREAS, stated in Article IV, Section I, of the 2005 XU-CSG Constitution, the XU-CSG shall represent XU students on matters pertaining to their general interest and welfare in the areas of: 1.1 Academics 1.2 Students Rights and Welfare 1.3 Spiritual Formation and Social Development 1.4 Physical Enhancement 1.5 Extra-Curricular Affairs. WHEREAS, stated in Article IV, Section 5 (Student Services and Formation Units), of the 2013 Undergraduate Student Handbook, the Office of Mission and Ministry [or OMM] is the umbrella unit of the Universitys formation cluster and has the mandate to oversee offices under it, such asUniversity Athletics Office [or UAO]. [An] area of formation includes physical wellness [aimed at] form[ing] students into better person and better citizens. WHEREAS, stated in Article IV, Section 5.1, Letter D, of the 2013 Undergraduate Student Handbook, [the] University Athletics Office organizes and manages the different wellness, fitness, and sports activities such as Intramural Games in close coordination with the XU-CSG and the college councils. WHEREAS, modern studies in physical and sports education revealed that Intramural programs on college campuses enforce standards of moral conduct, otherwise known as good sportsmanship.1 Recognized as integral to a balanced physical education program, sports activities also enhance affective and reasoning abilities, positive attitude towards participation and cooperation, respect to individual dignity, and appreciation of individual interests and differences.2

WHEREAS, the second characteristic of Jesuit education3 highlights the fullest development of all talents including physical well-being geared towards a balanced person in service to the greater communities. WHEREAS, the Intramural Games let students achieve a balanced mind and sound body among a spectrum of holistic formations deemed and believed to be significant; develop their total individuality in terms of physical, social, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual growth just as Atenean education strives to develop the total individual; and engage in opportunities to nurture and increase skills heightening the value of life. WHEREAS, the University, in its Mission Statement, implies its responsibility to its students in providing opportunities and facilities for recreation as a part of the liberal educational offering and as leisure time activities. WHEREAS, the need for institutional support and control of clear and concrete Intramural program, policies, and processes and the establishment of a centralized and visible Intramurals Committee solely devoted to the organization and conduct of Intramurals activities are unquestionably necessary. WHEREFORE, said Intramurals Committee to be sheltered under the OMM shall be composed of representatives from the UAO, the Office of Student Affairs, the CSG, and the college councils. The committee head shall be appointed by the Vice President for Mission and Ministry. Proper representation among involved university offices and student organizations is made to determine ways in which campus intramurals and its objectives may be strengthened, expanded, and coordinated to maximize opportunities. WHEREFORE, the institutionalized Intramurals Committee shall convene thirty (30) days after the start of classes for the summer term, school year 2014-2015. THEREFORE IT BE RESOLVED, this resolution takes effect upon the approval of two thirds (2/3) of the Directorate, sitting en banc. Done this 22nd day of November, 2013 at Loyola Conference Room of the Magis Student Complex, Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan, Cagayan de Oro City, by the 20th Directorate in session assembled.
