Soyuz cosmonauts to take Olympic torch into space ahead of Sochi Games
A Russian Soyuz rocket, with three crew members, has blasted off from the Beikonur cosmodrome in
Kazakhastan for the International Space Station. During space walks, the cosmonauts will take the
Olympic torch into open space as part of torch's relay, ahead of the winter games in Sochi in February
2014. But, for safety concerns, the torch would not be lit.
USA Teamretain Americas Cup capping streak of 8 consecutive wins
The US yachting team has retained the Americas Cup, in what is being described as one of the greatest
comebacks in sporting history. Team USA beat New Zealand in a deciding race in San Francisco Bay,
achieving an unprecedented eight consecutive wins.
Raghuram Rajan panel calls for ending special category criteria to provide additional aid to poorer
states
Raghuram Rajan Committee has made a case for ending the special category criteria for providing
additional assistance to poorer states. The committee, headed by the then Chief Economic Advisor
Raghuram Rajan, suggested a new methodology for devolving funds on states based on a 'Multi
Dimensional Index (MDI). The Panel has ranked Goa and Kerala as the most advanced state and Odisha
and Bihar the least. The committee has suggested that the 28 states be split into three categories - least
developed, less developed and relatively developed -depending upon their MDI scores. Based on the
MDI scores, the 10 least developed states are Odisha, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand,
Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The seven most developed status
are Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttrakhand and Haryana.
Land powers vested with centre not provincial councils: Sri Lanka Supreme Court
A three-member bench of Sri Lankas Supreme Court on 26

September 2013 stated that powers related
to land are vested with the Central Government and not with the Provincial Councils. The decision was
given by the bench headed by Chief Justice Mohan Peiris in an appeal filed by the Ministry of Plantation
Industries. The controversy over whether land and police powers can be exercised by the Provincial
governments erupted after Tamil National Alliance demanded full implementation of the 13th
Amendment which created the Provincial Council system in 1987.
Indian Railways Diesel Locomotive Works Produces Worlds First Ever 5500 HP Locomotive
Indian Railways has produced the prototype 5500 HP diesel locomotives (WDG5) which are already
running as a pilot project in North Central Railway. This Loco is developed by Diesel Locomotive Works
(DLW), Varanasi, a production unit of Indian Railways. This is so because no locomotive manufacturer in

smaller moving dimension of locomotive as compared to USA and Canada. The locomotive will be able
to achieve 100 Kmph speed on level track with higher axle load. DLW is now one of the biggest
locomotive manufacturers in the world. In the year 2012-13, DLW manufactured an unprecedented 294
locomotives, thereby increasing its production nearly three times from 112 locomotives manufactured
in the year 2002-03. Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi will be shining in the glory of Golden
Jubilee year when it will be completing 50 years of its production service next year i.e 2014 since its
inception in 1964.
CBSE plans to set up centre in Gulf Region
A gulf region-based new center of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is on the cards. The
new center is likely to be set up in Dubai. This was announced by the Union Minister for human
Resource Development, M.Pallam Raju who addressed by video conferencing a gathering of the
Principals of CBSE schools from the gulf region in Dubai. The new center helps facilitate and ease
communication between schools, students and teachers at CBSE schools in the Gulf. It will also help in
examination, teacher training and affiliation for CBSE schools in the Gulf.
India International Security Expo opens in Delhi

forces opened at the Pragati Maidan in New Delhi on 26
