Drunk driving crackdown
Sheriffs department to amp up
efforts during holidays. PAGE 6
By KRYSTAL TOMASSO
The Sun
To serve selflessly is a sure way
to become an admired leader.
Police Chief Nick Matteo is
this type of leader, according to
Mayor Randy Brown. Matteos re-
tirement from Evesham Town-
ship earned him a proclamation
at the council meeting on Dec. 3,
where Brown explained why lead-
ers seek out people such as Mat-
teo to be part of their team.
He is a man who throughout
his career has been as loyal to
Evesham as the township has
ever seen. Brown boasted about
the man he looks up to and whose
friendship he cherishes.
Nicks had more jobs in town
than probably most, and why?
Anytime somebody needed some-
body to do something, they asked
Nick. You always hope for that
person or those people who can

The Holidays
Make the holiday brighter for
local children by participating in
Project Giving Tree at the YMCA
of Burlington and Camden Coun-
ties, a cause-driven nonprofit
charitable organization.
Through Project Giving Tree,
the Y strives to build hope and
wonder for children by providing
gifts to deserving children whose
families face financial hardship.
The Giving Trees are decorated
with tags identifying a child's
name, age, clothing size and other
items they would like from Santa.
The community is encouraged to
stop by the Y and select one or
more tags from the Tree now
through Thursday, Dec. 12 and
help make a child feel like a star
this holiday season.
Individuals and organizations
are asked to return the star(s)
with the wrapped gifts to the Y by

Y
ouve heard it time and again
lately, but its worth repeating:
Shop local this holiday season!
Were already two weeks into this
shortened holiday shopping season
since Thanksgiving was so late this
year but if you havent already fin-
ished your shopping, you should
strongly consider buying as local as
you possibly can.
Keeping your spending dollars in
your hometown, or at least in the re-
gion, has immense benefits on the
local economy.
Even companies as large as Ameri-
can Express are touting the impor-
tance of shopping local. The company
started the now well-known Small
Business Saturday the Saturday
after Thanksgiving, the day after
Black Friday in 2010 to promote
small businesses. Just last year, a
study reported an estimated $5.5 bil-
lion was spent at small businesses on
that day in 2012!
A vibrant and successful local busi-
ness community has a trickle-down ef-
fect on our own pockets. Just think:
Successful local businesses make
other businesses want to locate in our
town.
More businesses equals more rata-
bles, which, in turn, lowers our taxes.
The more ratables we have, and the
lower our taxes are, the more attrac-
tive our community becomes to future
residents.
It all starts with you. If you have a
choice between buying a gift at a big
box store or a local mom-and-pop, sup-
port your neighbors by making that
purchase locally.
Our small businesses are already
struggling with a still-rebounding
economy and a holiday shopping sea-
son that is six days shorter than nor-
mal. Lets all help them out by opening
their doors and opening our wallets to
them. We can make it a truly happy
holiday season.
Shop local!
This holiday season, support local businesses

Sheriffs department cracking down on drunk drivers
The Burlington County Sheriff s Depart-
ment will be cracking down on drunk driv-
ers as part of the annual holiday season
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over statewide
campaign.
Running through Jan. 2, local and state
law enforcement officials will conduct satu-
ration patrols and sobriety checkpoints
looking for motorists who may be driving
while intoxicated.
A concentrated national effort, the cam-
paign helps to raise awareness about the
dangers of drinking and driving through
high-visibility enforcement and public edu-
cation tools.
As part of this program our department
received a $4,400 grant, which will allow us
to provide 88 hours of enforcement
throughout the county," Sheriff Jean Stan-
field said. This effort will bring attention
to the serious consequences of drunk driv-
ing and the grave danger those who choose
to drink and drive pose to all who share the
road with them.
Last year in New Jersey, 19 percent of all
motor vehicle fatalities were alcohol-relat-
ed. Nationally, during the combined
months of December in 2007-2011, there
were 4,169 people killed in drunk driving
crashes.
Stanfield offered the following advice to
help residents avoid the dangers of drunk
driving:
Take mass transit, a taxicab, or ask a
sober friend to drive you home.
Spend the night where the activity is
held.
If you see an impaired driver on the
road, contact law enforcement. Your ac-
tions may save someones life, and inaction
could cost a life.
Always buckle-up, every ride. Its your
best defense against an impaired driver.
If you are intoxicated and traveling on
foot, the safest way to get home is to take a
cab or have a sober friend or family
member drive or escort you to your
doorstep.
Be responsible. If someone you know is
drinking, do not let that person get behind
the wheel.

Marc Ricci, manager of Long
and Foster Real Estates Marlton
office, announced that Cristin
Holloway has been named a Five
Star real estate agent for 2013.
This is the third time she has
achieved Five Star status. The
Five Star Professional Program is
the only service award based on a
combination of direct client and
industry professional feedback.
This award is limited to just 7
percent of all professionals with-
in a specific industry and market
area.
A collective approach to identi-
fying service professionals is
unique in the marketplace and
specifically designed to help con-
sumers identify professionals
who have scored highest in over-
all satisfaction (satisfaction of
clients, peers and industry ex-
perts).
Real estate agents do not pay a
fee to be included in the evalua-
tion process or to be named as a
Five Star Real Estate Agent.
With more than 16 years of real
estate experience, Cristin is a
multi-million dollar producer.
She is a certified short sale and
foreclosure resource through the
National Association of Realtors,
and holds a bachelors degree in
business and a masters degree in
administrative science from Fair-
leigh Dickinson University. Prior
to her real estate career, Cristin

and CEO of Big Brothers-Big Sis-
ters of Burlington County, then
became COO of a newly merged
organization, Big Brothers Big
Sisters of Burlington, Camden
and Gloucester Counties.
Previously, she was the direc-
tor of Operations for Community
Options, Inc. a nationally based
non-profit organization located in
Princeton.
She also worked as a fund rais-
ing director for the American
Heart Association in Philadel-
phia.

Six practices of Hyland Levin
LLP were named on the "Best
Law Firms" list issued by U.S.
News and World Report and Best
Lawyers, 2014.
Hyland Levin practices named
by Best Lawyers included the fol-
lowing New Jersey practices: liti-
gation environmental; natural
resources law; environmental
law; franchise law; litigation
real estate; and immigration law.
Firms included in the 2014
Best Law Firms list are recog-
nized for professional excellence
with persistently impressive rat-
ings from clients and peers.
"U.S. News has more than two
decades of experience in provid-
ing the public with the most accu-
rate and in-depth rankings of a
wide range of institutions, in-
cluding our Best Law Schools
rankings," Tim Smart, executive
editor of U.S. News & World Re-
port said. "Law firms are an inte-
gral part of our rankings and a
natural accompaniment to the
law school rankings."
The 2014 rankings are based on
the highest number of participat-
ing firms and highest number of
client ballots on record. To be eli-
gible for a ranking, a firm must
have a lawyer listed in The Best
Lawyers in America.
More than 12,000 attorneys pro-
vided over 330,000 law firm as-
sessments, and almost 7,000
clients provided close to 20,000
evaluations. In addition, to pro-
vide personal insight, a new Law
Firm Leaders Survey was imple-
mented in the decision-making
process.
The 2014 Best Law Firms
rankings can be seen in their en-
tirety by visiting bestlawfirms.us-

And Nicks been all that, for
many, many, many years hes
been all that.
During his 47-year career with
the township, Matteo was a detec-
tive first class, patrol sergeant
and was appointed in 1990 as Eve-
shams third chief of police.
When Brown came into office
in 2007, he was determined to get
the Fourth of July parade back in
full swing. It was during this time
that he saw the influence Matteo
brought to his cause. During the
proclamation, Brown reminisced
about the conversation he had
with Matteo during that parade.
In my first parade of July
2008, my friend, Nick Matteo, and
I stood at the top of Main Street
and Maple and looked down and
said, look what we did in one
year. Looked down at 10,000 peo-
ple sitting there waiting for a pa-
rade to start.
Matteo was honored not just
for his work in the line of duty,
but for his character, integrity
and the personal impact he had
on those he served and who
served him. Seats were filled with
citizens, and the back of the coun-
cil room was lined with several
