Although IU School of Medicine has nine campuses across Indiana, IUSMTerre Haute is the only campus that houses a Rural Medicine Program in the state of Indiana. IU School of Medicine educates the second largest medical student body in the U.S. The Rural Medicine Programs student body represents 34 of the 92 Indiana counties and 18 colleges and universities. 50% of the Rural Medicine Programs 2013 entering class received some form of academic scholarship. Nearly 40% of IU School of Medicine graduates enter primary care fields. The Rural Medicine Program has a strong focus in the primary care fields, but also encourages students to consider other medical specialties of need in rural communities. IU School of Medicine has more than 60 clinical departments and specialty divisions available to students. Approximately half of Indianas physicians received all or some of their education at the IU School of Medicine. Nearly half of IU School of Medicine graduates accept in-state residencies.

Timeline of Important Events Rural M.D. Program 1903 IU School of Medicine is established in Bloomington, Indiana. 1906 Third-year medical students begin clinical study in Indianapolis. IU School of Medicine moves to Indianapolis. Statewide Medical Education Centers are established. IU School of Medicine and Indiana State University create the Rural Health B/MD Program. IU School of Medicine creates the Rural Medicine Program, which is housed at the IU School of MedicineTerre Haute campus. IU School of Medicine matriculates the first class of M.D. students on the rural track Rural Health Innovation Collaborative forms to combat the worsening health care worker shortages in rural communities. 2010 Third-year rural medical students begin clinical clerkships in Terre Haute. IU School of Medicine graduates the first class of M.D. students from the rural track.
