They will have to be able to match the prefixes and suffixes with root words as well as match the meanings of the prefixes and suffixes with the appropriate prefix or suffix. Materials Book: Oscars Spots by Janey Robertson (Have one copy for each student) Push It Say It cards (21 different sets) Suffix Worksheet that will be sent home with the students as homework for the night and we will go over it the next day in class. (Answer Key included) Flash cards made out of die-cuts that are already made ( there will be three for each student) SMARTboard activity (with Push It Say It cards) Laminated piece of paper that says Suffix and what the definition is (that we be hung up around the room along with other helpful definitions that the students will need to remember). White board access so the root words can be taped to them. Scissors Previously made words that are easy to cut for the word surgery. Tape Teachers set of Push It Say It cards 1 Baggie 21 slips of paper (7 saying ing; 7 saying ed; 7 saying s) Highlighters

Integration of technology There will be a SMARTboard activity where the teacher will do Push It Say It and then the students will do them with their cards that the teacher has previously made for them. If the SMARTboard is not working on the day that the teacher will have a set of previously made Push IT Say It cards that the teacher will have so that he or she may use them. Anticipatory Set (Focus) I am going to have a list of words and we are going to perform word surgery on them and will cut off the suffixes from the root words. Then I will explain that these are what we are going over for the next hour. Then I will pass around a bag that will have multiple of each suffix we are going to talk about. Whichever card that they draw will be the suffix they are responsible for later in the class. Access/Review Prior Knowledge When the teacher review prior knowledge, they will first begin by going over what the root words are to make sure that the students know them and we be able to use them when the teacher introduces the suffixes. The teacher will have the words written on slips of paper that they will go over one at a time, together.

Topic presentation (What will the students be told?) Go over what a suffix is. A suffix is a letter or group of letters that is added to the end of another word. (3 minutes) Go over what the meaning of -ing, -ed, and -s are. (ing means the present; ed means past; s means plural or more than one) (5 minutes) Go over examples for each suffix. -ing (spelling, showing, yelling, starting, slowing, ending, and adding); -ed (spelled, showed, yelled, started, slowed, ended, and added); -s ( spells, shows, yells, starts, slows, ends, and adds). (6 minutes) Make flashcards where they have to fill in the examples because the teacher will already have the cards made that have the suffix and the meaning. (5 minutes) Do Push It Say It: The teacher will have my set on the board and the students will have their set on their desks with them so that we are able to do it together. (8 minutes) Read the book Happy Endings. The teacher will ask them some questions to go along with the story. (8 minutes) While we are reading the book, the students will highlight all of the words that they see that end in ing, -ed, or s. After reading the book, we will read the definition together as a class. The teacher will have the students answer six questions that they will then turn in and the teacher will look at them to make sure that they have a good understanding of what a suffix means and what it is. They will bring it in the next day and then will be responsible for handling the suffix that they drew out of the bag the previous day.
