SOCAN holds Annual General Meeting
2009; new board of directors announced
More than a hundred SOCAN mem-
bers gathered in Montreal’s Centre
Mont-Royal on June 16, 2009, to
attend their Annual General Meeting.
SOCAN CEO André LeBel presented
an overview of last year’s accomplish-
ments and next year’s challenges,
while treasurer Stan Meissner
explained the organization’s 2008
Financial Statements, using a set of
comparative charts. President Pierre-
Daniel Rheault then summarized the
annual reports of each of the SOCAN
board committees (in the areas of
Governance; Tariff, Licensing and
Distribution; Membership; and Risk
Identification and Management). Gilles
Valiquette, as vice-chair of the SOCAN
Foundation board, highlighted the
Foundation’s achievements and read
testimonials from grant recipients.

At the AGM, the names of the organi-
zation’s new board of directors for the
2009-2012 term were announced by a
representative of Computershare, the
company hired to supervise SOCAN’s
first-ever online election. SOCAN's
members elect a new board of direc-
tors every three years. Voting to elect
the board for the 2009-2012 term took
place between April 15 and May 13,
2009.The board consists of 18 direc-
tors – nine writer members and nine
publisher members.
Heading the board as president is Earl
Rosen, owner of publishing company
De Sade Songs and the classical and
jazz record label Marquis. Rosen has
already served on SOCAN’s board of
directors for nine years, including three
as president. Other officers of the
board include Gilles Valiquette as first
vice-chair, Gary Furniss as second
vice-chair, Rosaire Archambault as
secretary, and Stan Meissner as treas-
urer.
The new board of directors is constitut-
