WORLD LIBRARY AND INFORMATION CONGRESS 79TH IFLA General Assembly And Conference
Singapore hosted the International Federation of Library Associations WLIC 79 General Conference And Assembly, "Future Libraries: Infinite Possibilities", the leading professional event for the International and information Congress comprised of professional presentations, poster sessions and Trade Exhibition. It was hosted by IFLA and the National Library Board Singapore and the Library Association of Singapore and was held from 17-23 August at the SUNTEC Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Conference Centre.

The conference opened with a dazzaling dragon dance, followed by an Indian-Chinese-Malay dance drum routine by youths. This was followed by speeches from Mdm Ingrid Parent, IFLA President, Mr Yaacob Ibrahim Minister of Communications and Information Singapore; Keynote by Mdm Amb Chan Heng Chee. After speeches the children from the NLB reading programme entertained the audience. This year there were 3,500 registered delegates from 120 countries. Brunei Darussalam was represented by a 20 member delegation of librarians. Go to page 6

BLA TRAINING COMMITTEE MEETING

The Committee met on 2 Sept 2013 to discuss plans and action for study visit to Kuala Lumpur and forthcoming seminars.

IFLA ASEAN CAUCUS INAUGURAL MEETING

For the first time in IFLA WLIC history, a caucus on the ASEAN region was launched with the theme Community across Borders hosted conversations on regional initiatives to encourage greater use and awareness of the regions rich content and also foster higher levels of regional unity. It was held on Saturday 17 Aug 2013, at 4pm and was attended by CONSAL Executive Board Members and other guests and ASEAN librarians. Mr Andy Neale, Head of Digital NZ at the National Library of New Zealand made a presentation. It was followed by a reception where foreign delegates were able to gain new insights into the regions library developments and network with ASEAN librarians.

LAS AWARDS NIGHT AND BOOK LAUNCH

Singapore President was held on Sunday 18 Aug 2013 at the Grand Ballroom of the Conrad Hotel. Our heartiest congratulations to Mr Ramachandran, Executive Director, National Book Development Council Singapore, former CONSAL SecGen, former Director NLB Singapore and a good and longtime friend of many Bruneian librarians on being awarded the Lifetime Contribution Award.

A special publication of 99 stories from librarians In 99 Words: Stories That Librarians Tell was Launched. It was attended by IFLA Governing Board, President and President elect and key librarians.

INAUGURATION OF IFLA PRESIDENT

An inaugural reception was held by the Finnish Library Association to honour Ms Sinikka Sipita the incoming IFLA President. It was held on the evening of 21 Aug 2013 at the Empress Ballroom, Carlton Hotel. It was generously sponsored by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture and the Embassy of Finland in Singapore.

PRELIM DISCUSSION WITH IATUL

Dr Elisha Chiwaree IATUL Secretary /Director of Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Cape Town met up with Pn Nellie, BLA President, Hjh Pusparaini and Hjh Rosnani on 20 August 2013 at Suntec Singapore to discuss possible future collaboration between IATUL and BLA.

DISCUSSION WITH IFLA

Pn Nellie, BLA President met up with Ms Fiona Bradley, IFLA Manager, Member services and Development, to seek advice from IFLA on building a more dynamic library association.

IFLA SEMINARS
The BLA President attended a few sessions during IFLA, and two of them were on Internationalizing your career in the session Taking charge of your career: continuing professional development and workplace learning. It was led by Susan Schnuer, Mortenson Centre for International Library Programs, University of Illinois. Go to page 6.

The other seminar was on How to Prepare your papers for publication: strategies for getting your interesting results and important best practices published led by Prof Dr Sabdra Hirsh of San Jose Sate University. Topics covered were What is research?, how to develop a good research question, choose the right research approach. On Getting published, covered publication goals, match content with the right journal, manuscript development, manuscript submission.

TRADE EXHIBITION
The exhibition by library vendors, library schools, product demo and poster sessions was opened at 4pm on Sunday 18 Aug 2013 at level 4 room 401-403.

And today the task of librarians are the maintenance of correct search in huge amounts of information, formation of information culture and literacy, assistance to socially vulnerable people and persons with a low level of information literacy.
