Grade A STEEPLEJACKING

THE FOLLOWING IS A GUIDE TO THE MINIMUM ACTIVITIES A COMPETENT STEEPLEJACKING OPERATIVE WOULD BE EXPECTED TO PERFORM TO ACHIEVE INDUSTRY ACCREDITATION AT GRADE A 1 Contributing to Efficiency and Effectiveness of the Work Environment The operative should consistently work tidily and efficiently while carrying out their duties, maintaining an orderly work area, tools and equipment. Also, the ability to communicate and work effectively with colleagues and others. Contributing to Health and Safety in the Workplace The operative should be aware of their responsibility in respect of Health and Safety practices and procedures. They should be on the look out for hazards, and when identified deal with them if appropriate. They will be expected to have a basic understanding of emergency procedures and be able to respond. Slinging and Signalling for the Movement of Loads The operative must demonstrate competence to select the appropriate method of slinging, also, prepare and sling loads for lifting. Signalling and communicating to clearly and safely direct the movement of loads is also required. Operating Powered Tools and Equipment Operating powered tools and designated small plant for routing predictable operations. Positioning and Removing Specialised Equipment for Accessing The operative must be competent to identify the situation and specific requirements for facilitating access, positioning and securing specialised equipment including vertical ladders, roof ladders, crawler boards and rope ladders. Installing, Lifting and Suspension Apparatus The operative must be competent to identify and assess the requirements for lifting and suspension apparatus including setting up and removal. Apparatus includes wire and fibre ropes, chains and slings, winches and pulley blocks. Establishing Rope Access Arrangements The operative must be competent to assess the requirements and situation for rope access, setting up and testing the rope access and its utilisation. The equipment includes bosuns seats, roof rigs, tap anchors, cradles and powered winches. Establishing Provision for Fall Arrest The operative must be competent to understand when to use a safety harness including assessment of the work area and the situation for which provision for safety and fall arrest is required. It covers the checking and inspection of equipment, ensuring attachment positions are secure, use of harnesses and procedures for rescue in the event of a fall. Providing Surface Finishings (Painting) The operative must be competent to carry out the preparation and painting of new and previously painted stonework, brickwork, rendering, concrete, softwoods, hardwoods, ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals and glass reinforced plastics with protective and decorative coatings.

IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE COMPETENCES THE OPERATIVE MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE IN EITHER: Brick and Concrete Category 10 Erecting and Dismantling Basic Steeplejack Scaffolds The operative must be competent to interpret scaffolding requirements depending on type of structure, the type of scaffold to use (tube and fitting or system scaffolding), also deal with the setting out, erection and dismantling of the scaffolding and cover safety, security and maintenance during use. Installing Basic Banding or Irregular Awkward Objects to the Structural Fabric The operative must be competent to plan, organise and adopt safe working practices for installing components to the structural fabric, including steel bands/angles to structures and irregular awkward objects. Items also included are bolts and cleats, ferrous and non-ferrous items, structural and decorative masonry components. Providing Surface Finishings (Brickwork, Concrete Repairs and Rendering) The operative must be competent to cut out defective areas of brickwork, stonework, concrete and reinstate with compatible components and materials to solid and applied backgrounds forming vertical, inclined and horizontal, flat and shaped surfaces. Materials include bricks, mortars, concrete, rendering (sand/cement), additives, bonding agents, protective/synthetic coatings, primers, epoxy resin mortars and mastics.

OR Steel Category 13 Installing and Dismantling Steel Chimneys up to 40 Metres High The operative must be competent at interpreting instructions, planning, organising and adopting safe working practices for installing and dismantling steel chimneys up to 40 metres high. This will include locations and dimensions, identifying obstructions and hazards, identifying types of surfaces, selecting components, setting out, assembling, positioning and lowering components and commissioning completed structures. Grade B STEEPLEJACKING

THE FOLLOWING IS A GUIDE TO THE MINIMUM ACTIVITIES A COMPETENT STEEPLEJACKING OPERATIVE WOULD BE EXPECTED TO PERFORM TO ACHIEVE INDUSTRY ACCREDITATION AT GRADE B 1 2 COMPETENCE AT GRADE A STEEPLEJACKING ACTIVITIES PLUS: Contributing to Establishing the Operational Area, the Progress of Operations and Organisation of Resources The operative should display competence in contributing to the supervision of operations. Establishing and maintaining health, safety and

welfare systems. Assisting with the selection and deployment of materials and components, plant and equipment. Also, the ability to communicate and work effectively with colleagues and others. Plan and Set Out Scaffolding/Rigging to a Design The operative must be competent to interpret the design and measure and set out for the proposed structure. Also to confirm the area of operations, safety requirements for the work and surrounding environment. Planning the resources and agreeing a programme of work. Establishing Provision for Fall Arrest The operative must be competent to understand when to use a safety harness including assessment of the work area and the situation for which provision for safety and fall arrest is required. It covers the checking and inspection of equipment, ensuring attachment positions are secure, use of harnesses and procedures for rescue in the event of a fall. Inspect and Maintain the Integrity and Security of Scaffolding The operative must be competent in inspecting and maintaining the integrity and security of scaffolding. This includes inspection for the type, materials and make up to ensure they are correct, stable and fixings are secure. Also checking that environmental protection is in place.
