Alfred Dreyfus

FRANCE: Amidst a political storm, and Born; 1859 and Died; 1935.
Dreyfus was a captain in the French army and his family owned cotton mills. His only fault was an honest Jew.Maney superior officer were jealous of his straightforwardness and happy life. In September 1894, when he was captain in the army, he was falsely charged by another Army officer named Henry with delivering secret papers to Prussia (Germany). He was countermartialled, dismissed and transported to Devils Island prison for life. The storm of protest started by his wife and family, whipped up a period of pro-Jewish and anti Jewish rivalry lasting several years. The cursive writing found in papers was more or less similar to Dreyfus which put him on charges of treason and sedition. The anti-Jew Press spread rumors and created an inimical atmosphere for him. Dreyfus prayed for re- trail when Major Pie quart was in charge of investigation. He found that Drefus was innocent. Even then, the superior officers tried to hush up the matter. Piquant was a man of upright values and found one Esterhazy as the culprit behind.Picquart was sent to Tunisia, but he did not allow the matter to subside. He sent a letter to newspaper detailing the truth. He found powerful allies in Geroge Clemenceau, editor of L Aurore, and writer Emila Zola. Zola was exiled and Picquaet proved that many documents put up in Drypfus case were forgeries. Dryfus was retired on June 3.1899 and was granted amnesty on September 19, 1906, the court upheld the case. He was instituted in the army. Henry, who was had implicated him, commited suicide and war minister responsible for the faux pas eventually resigned. Dreyfus took part in the First World War and was honored with the Legion of Honor for his bravery. He died at the age of 76
