1.(a) Define the following: [6]

(b) In a tension test the bar is found to taper from (D+a) dia. to (D-a) dia. Prove
that the error involved in using the mean dia to calculate the Youngs modulus
is (10a/D)2 Percent. [10]

2. A steel rope lowers a load of 15kN at tge rate if 1m/sec. When the length of
rope unwound is 10m, it gets jammed suddenly. Calculate the instantaneous stress
induced in it due to sudden stoppage and the max. instantaneous elongation if the
rope is 30mm in dia. Take E = 200 GN/m2 and g=9.81m/sec2 . [16]
3. An overhanging beam ABC carries a u.d.l. of 10kN/m over the entire length of 8m
and a point load of 20kN at the free end C. If the simply-supported span AB = 6m
obtain the S.F. and B.M diagram and locate the point of contraflexure. [16]
4. (a) Find the section modulus of a hollow rectangular section of outer dimensions
12cm × 20cm and inner dimension 10cm × 18cm. [6]
(b) Find the dia of wooden beam to support a u.d.l. of 27.5kN/m over a simply-
supported span of 4m. The bending stress is limited to 70N/mm2 . [10]
5. Find the shear stress distribution for a rectangular section (b × h) if the S.F. at
section = F. Find the ratio of max. to mean shear stress. Sketch the distribution.

6. (a) State and explain Mohr’s theorems used to find slope and deflection. [6]
(b) An overhanging beam of simply-supported span L and overhangs of “a” on
both sides carrier two point loads of W each at the two free ends. Obtain the
slope at left end, deflections at free end and mid-span (EI = Constant). [10]
7. (a) Explain the modes of failure of their cylinders. [6]
(b) Calculate the thickness of metal for a thin cylinder of 1m dia to carry water
under a pressure of 2N/mm2 , Max permissible tensile stress = 80 N/mm2 .

1.(a) Sketch the stress-strain diagram for a ductile material like mild steel tested in
tension upto failure and mark the salient points on it. [6]
(b) A steel wire 3mm in dia. and 2m long is extended by 0.75 mm when a weight
W is suspended from the wire. If the same load is suspended from a brass
wire 2mm in dia and 2.5m long. It is elongated by 4.64mm. Find the modulus
of elasticity of brass, if that of steel is 200 GN/m2 . [10]

2. (a) Explain the difference between gradual, sudden and impact loadings. [6]
(b) Calculate the strain-energy stored in a bar of length 3m and 20mm in dia.,
if subjected to a tensile load of 100kN. Take E = 200GN/m2 . Find also the
modulus of resilience. [10]

4. A simply supported beam of span 9m carries a point load of 40kN at 2m from left
end and a u.d.l of 16kN/m for 4m to the left of A. Obtain the max B.M. and max
S.F. Sketch the S.F. and B.M diagrams. [16]

5. Obtain the shear stress distribution for a circular section of radius “r” subjected
to an S.F = F at a certain section. Find the ratio of max to mean shear stress.
Sketch the distribution. [16]

6. (a) Explain the moment-area method of finding slopes and deflections in beams.

(b) Using the same obtain the max slope and max deflection in a cantilever beam
of span L carrying a load W at the free end (EI = Const) [10]

7. Derive Lame’s equations for a thick cylinder subjected to internal pressure. State
the assumptions made. [16]

8. A thin spherical shell of 1m dia, 5mm thick is filled with water under pressure till
its volume increases by 200 cc. Find the pressure exerted by water on the shell if
E = 2 × 105 N/mm2 and m1 = 0.3 for the material. [16]

1.(a) State Hooke’s law and define the terms Young’s modulus, Rigidity modulus,
and bulk modulus. [6]
(b) The modulus of elasticity of a material is 200 GN/m2 and the modulus of
rigidity is 80 GN/m2 . Find the Poisson’s ratio of the material and its bulk
modulus. [10]
2. (a) Explain the terms strain energy, resilience, and modulus of resilience. [6]
(b) A bar of length 4m and 60mm dia. hangs vertically. it has a collar securely
attached at the lower end. Find the max stress induced when a weight of 3kN
falls from a height of 10cm on the collar assuming the extension to be small
in comparison with the height of fall. Take E =200 GN/m2 . [10]
3. A simply-supported beam of span L carries a uniformly varying load of intensity
zero at left end and “w” per unit length at the right end. Obtain the max values
of S.F. and B.M. Sketch the S.F. and B.M. diagrams. [16]
4. (a) A beam of length L bends into a circular arc of radius R due to a constant
moment M. Obtain expressions for max. slope at ends and max central de-
flection.

(b) A steel strip 6mm wide and 3mm thick is bent into a circle of radius 1.5m.
Find the max. bending stress, if E = 200 GN/m2 . [8]
5. Obtain the shear stress distribution for a square section of side “a” placed with one
of its diagonals horizontal. Find the max. shear stress if the length of its diagonal
=d. and S.F. at section = F. [16]
6. A simply supported beam of span 10m carries a load of 20kN at 3m from left end
and 30kN at 2m from right end. Find the slope at left end and max. deflection.
(EI = Constant). [16]
7. A thin cylinder 1m in dia, 2m long and 20mm thick is closed at ends by rigid plates.
It is filled with water at atmospheric pressure. Find how much additional water is
required to be pumped in so as to make the final pressure in cylinder = 7N/mm2 .
Take E = 200 GN/m2 ; m1 = 0.25 and K = 2.4 GN/m2 (for water). [16]
8. Derives Lame’s equations to find the stresses in a thick cylinder subjected to internal

1.(a) Explain the terms “Elasticity”, “Plasticity”, ”Volumetric strain” and ”Pois-
son’s ratio”. [6]
(b) A bar of length 1m tapers uniformly in dia from 40mm at one end to 35mm
at the other. Find the decrease in length due to an axial compressive load of
140kN. Take E = 200 GN/m2 . [10]
2. A weight of 12kN is dropped on a collar attached at the lower end of a vertical bar
3m long and 30mm in dia. Calculate the height of drop if the max. instantaneous
stress is not to exceed 120N/mm2 . Also calculate the instantaneous elongation.
Take E = 200GN/m2. [16]
3. (a) Explain the concept of S.F. and B.M. Derive the relation between S.F, B.M,
and rate of loading at a section of a beam. [8]
(b) A simply supported beam of span 10m carries a u.d.l of 10kN/m over the left.

shear stress distribution marking the salient values. Find the percentage of shear
carried by the web. [16]
6. A simply-supported beam of span L carries a triangular load varying from zero at
left end to ”w” per unit length at the right end. Find the slope at left end and
central B.M. (EI = Constant). [16]
7. Derive the formulae to find the longitudinal and circumferential stresses in a thin
cylinder internal dia. “d” thickness of metal “t” subjected to an internal pressure
= p. [16]
8. Find the thickness of metal required for a thick cylinder of internal radius 40mm
to withstand an internal pressure of 25N/mm2 , if the max tensile stress permitted
=125 N/mm2 . [16]
