This was my first major assignment in Journalism. Using this new style of writing, I am able to express my ideas in a new way that is much more tailored to my personal opinion. This project opened the door to a whole new world of communication. Because of this editorial, I have become more interested in the Journalism class. I did my piece about the argument of whether or not the government should be allowed to force businesses to provide their workers with contraceptive health coverage if it goes against the values or religious beliefs of the business owners. I argued that it was unconstitutional, for it would abridge the First Amendment right to the freedom of religion as well as violating the conditions of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. This form of editorialized writing appeals to me greatly, for I feel much less constrained by the rules of conventional academic writing. I am much freer to simply research and explain my views on a certain topic. This assignment reflects my growth in research, because I used many different websites as sources to corroborate information of the different laws and organizations that were concerned. I used these different sources to provide quotes to support the claims in my thesis. I have found that this project has helped me to be a better researcher, and was a great way to get used to this new style of writing. I am also very grateful to be taking this class, for without the Communication Arts Program, I would never had thought I would enjoy it as much as I do, and probably would not have enrolled. Many students do not have the chance to take this class and I am happy I have the chance to because it gives me a different perspective of writing. It is important for me to include this project in my portfolio because it was my first major assignment in Journalism. It has shown me a different way to go about proving my points and as such, has shown me a new style of academic writing. This editorial also helped me to discover how interesting writing journalistic writing is to me, and might even be a possible career choice for me. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed doing this project and I am looking forward to doing more like it in the future.
