1. (a) Define
i. self inductance
ii. mutual inductance and
iii. efficient of coupling.
(b) Two coils of inductances 4 and 6 Henry are connected in parallel. If their
mutual inductances is 3 Henry, calculate the equivalent inductance of the
combination if
i. Mutual inductance assists the self inductance
ii. Mutual inductance opposes the self inductance [6+10]

2. (a) Give the applications of self excited generators.


(b) An 8 pole d.c. shunt generator with 778 wave connected armature conductors
and running at 500 rpm supplies a load of 12.5Ω resistance at terminal voltage
of 50V. The armature resistance is 0.24Ω and the field resistance is 250Ω. Find
the armature current, the induced emf and the flux per pole. [6+10]

3. (a) Compare the core Type and Shell type Transformers from constructional point
of view with neat sketches.

(b) Calculate the efficiencies at half full load and 1 4
full load of a 500KVA

i. Unity
ii. 0.8 lag . Given Iron Loss and full load copper Loss as 1000w and 2000w

4. (a) A 6 pole, 50 HZ, 3 phase induction motor runs at full load at a speed of 950
RPM Determine
i. Synchronous speed of the motor

iii. Frequency of rotor currents
(b) With neat sketches, explain the constructional details of the rotor of
i. Salient pole type
ii. Cylindrical type synchronous generator [8+8]

5. (a) Explain with a neat sketch the working of a repulsion type of moving iron

(b) Derive the expression for deflecting torque in the above type of M.I.instrument.

6. (a) With neat sketch explain the working of center tap full wave rectifier?
(b) In center tap full wave rectifier, the maximum voltage across half of secondary
winding is 50V and load resistance is 200 ohms. Find the average load voltage
and PIV ? Assume the diodes to be ideal. [8+8]

7. (a) Determine the bias point for the pnp circuit shown in figure 1 assume the β
=120, VBE = 0.3V?
(b) Explain any two applications of a transistor in detail. [8+8]

1. (a) What are the different types of elements that constitute an electric circuit?
(b) Find the current through the 10Ω resistor in the circuit shown in figure 1.

2. (a) Draw a neat sketch of a d.c. generator and label each part. State the function
of each part.
(b) A 4 pole d.c. generator with wave wound armature has 51 slots, each having 48
conductors. The flux per pole is 7.5 mwb. At what speed must the armature
be driven to give an induced emf of 440V. [8+8]

3. (a) Derive the EMF equation of a single Phase Transformer.


(b) The maximum flux density in the core of 240/2400 volts, 50 Hz single Phase
Transformer is 1.0 weber/sq.m.If the EMF per turn is 8 volts, determine
i. The primary and secondary turns and

4. (a) Draw a neat sketch showing the various parts of a Synchronous Generator and
Explain each part briefly.
(b) Explain why a 3 Phase induction motor can not run at Synchronous speed.
(c) A 3 Phase 50 Hz slip ring induction motor runs at 290 rpm at full load.

6. (a) With neat sketch explain the working of full wave bridge rectifier? Give its
advantages ?
(b) In bridge type full wave rectifier, the maximum secondary voltage is 136V.Find
the dc load voltage and PIV ? Assume the diodes to be ideal. [8+8]

7. (a) Explain the construction and working of an SCR.


(b) Give some applications of transistor amplifier in detail. [8+8]

8. (a) Why are the operating voltages of a cathode ray tube arranged so that the
deflecting plates are nearly ground potential?
(b) The final anode voltage of an electrostatic cathode ray tube is 3000volts, the
effective lengths of the deflection plates are 4 cm and they are kept 1 cm apart.
The distance of the screen from the mid point of the deflector plates is 32cm
and deflection voltage is 40V. Calculate The following:
i. velocity of an electron on reaching the deflector field
ii. time taken by an electron to travel through the field
iii. component of velocity due to field when the beam hits the screen
iv. angle of deflection
v. displacement of spot on the screen. [6+10]

of a Transformer.
(b) A 7.5 KVA,2400/120 V Transformer has the following parameters referred to
secondary side. Resistance (R2 )=0.05 Ω reactance (X2 )=0.1Ω.Calculate the
% voltage regulation at full load and
i. 0.8 Pf lag and
ii. 0.8 Pf lead [6+10]

4. (a) The Rotor frequency of a Three Phase induction motor when supplying a load
is 2 cycle per second and the slip is 4 %. If the rotor speed is 1440 rpm.
Determine
i. supply frequency
ii. Synchronous speed and
iii. the number of poles of the induction motor.
(b) Compare the constructional features of salient Pole and non salient pole al-

(b) Why is capacitor filter is preferred than inductor filter in rectifiers?
