Dear Dr. Bruce:

Im writing this letter to you to demonstrate and explain how I have met all six Student Learning Outcomes during the course of this class. Included in this portfolio are my revised Blog post paper, the annotated bibliography submitted for our persuasive essay as well as an excerpt from my Profile paper, and finally an example of in-class writing exercises. I have not organized these documents in any particular order. The first documents included in the portfolio are the combination of the annotated bibliography and an excerpt from my blog paper. These assignments showcase my ability to ethically and accurately cite sources in-text as well as in a bibliography format. I believe that throughout the semester with the assistance of both peer critique and critique from you directly, I was able to master the art of citations in my assignments. I believe that these two documents more than satisfy Student Learning Outcome #2. Using MLA style citations in all of my papers, I am confident that these sources are properly formatted and correctly used in-text and in the bibliography. One part of this SLO that I had struggled with was the idea that sources could be introduced at the beginning of a sentence as an alternative to end of sentence citations and also to help show that throughout a section of a paragraph one source was used. For example, in my profile paper, when I used one source to support in two or more different portions of the argument, I had to initially introduce the source and then cite the source again at the end to show that both parts of information came from the same source. After adjusting my citations after this error was brought to my attention, I believe that SLO #2 has been met.

To demonstrate that I have satisfied SLO #1, Im using my blog paper. Seeing as there was much more freedom with the style of writing our blog since it was exactly that, a blog, I chose to use a more informal approach to writing my paper. Select examples from my blog post such as, Well what about

that big ugly shower; the one that just hangs there in the corner of the room? and Im sure many of you were itching to just pull the lever because you wanted to see what that much water looked like on the floor. I know I have, showcase the informality that I decided to display in my blog post. My purpose of the blog post was to relate to my readers, and for that reason I believe I have satisfied the informal writing portion of SLO#1. Brainstorming and preparation for this paper
was started in class and the paper was completed and adjusted outside of class. Because of this, the in and out of class section in SLO #1 was satisfied. My Blog post written about Safety structures in Chemistry laboratories also satisfies many other SLOs in the course. I believe that the remaining four SLOs are all satisfied within this document. Firstly, as my approach to writing this paper was to relate to my reader, SLO#3 was satisfied. I started the paper offering a common opinion of a student and then continued to counteract that argument giving reasons and evidence, the article included at the end, to support why they should change their previous beliefs. Through this, I believe that SLO#3 was satisfied because the paper contains counterarguments, assumptions, and common beliefs among the students. The fourth SLO, about organization within a paper was satisfied in my blog post. I started the paper with the opposing view and progressively providing reasons and evidence as to why that should not be the common view. For this reason SLO #4 was satisfied in this document. As for the fifth SLO, essentially writing with depth and meaning, this SLO is ultimately satisfied in every writing assignment that I have turned in. And the last but definitely not the least important of all the SLOs; SLO #6, was satisfied in submitting this portfolio complete with my first draft, the critiques, and my revised draft of my blog post. I hope that this portfolio effectively satisfies all of your requirements as well as your personal hopes for my specific portfolio.

And finally, the last remaining part of SLO#1, the formal portion, I believe is satisfied in writing this cover letter to you. While it can be debated that this cover letter is informal in style, I believe it to be formal in style because it is much more structured speech wise and tone wise in comparison to my blog post which was highly informal. So, as stated, I believe that all sections of SLO #1 are fully satisfied in addition to the other five SLOs upon submitting this portfolio Respectfully submitted, Nicole M. Dyviniak
