Brochure
Description: A Tri-Fold Brochure of Project Love Date: 12/6/13 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 04, Julie Petersen Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop Objectives: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. (Incorporate at least four quality images (Not including the logo). One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.) Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three paragraphs. Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color. Process: I set up the tri fold in Adobe InDesign. I split my layout into three sections with the concept that one section would be the front flap of the brochure and the remaining sections would be the body of the brochure. I used black bar lines outlining the pictures I chose to help create a frame like design and add to the flow of this design. I deliberately chose kid photos that showed a lot of facial emotion in the background to create consistency in my theme and stuck to a simply background so I would not take away from the power of the images. For the image of the crying/upset child I used the quick selection tool in Adobe Photoshop to remove the background of the image. I then used the refine mask dialogue box to smooth, feather, shift edge and apply contrast to the outline of my image. The changes I made in the refine mask dialogue box made a softer image that didnt look so sharp and cutout against the brochures background. I then placed the image of the child into InDesign where I used the text wrap option to wrap my text around the alpha channel of the image. I created the logo in Illustrator using the pen tool and then I placed it into InDesign. I placed my first logo on my front page flap and then another smaller logo right underneath Our Mission section for the non profit organization Project Love.

Giving Back
We at Project Love are giving back to those in need by offering solutions to some of our growing problems; such as homelessness. We offer free haircuts, showers, clothing, and warm meals. We will help with resume/career/ job application, and leave everyone with an encouraging word. Project Love is here to help those in need, to make changes in their lives, just one day at a time. Project Love is about helping each other. Its about doing things differently. Its about hope. Its about faith. Its about promise. Its about love.

Those who have lost all hope, who have thought that the street is the only place for them, or for our friends (friends we may have never even met) that have lost their homes only to have found themselves on the street, welcome to Project Love.

About Us
Clair Tallbed--Founder My past work experiences include 10 years as Administrative Assistant at a local fire department and 15 years self employed as part of a family business. As a mother of three and grandmother of three, taking care of people comes natural to me. I am looking forward to helping Project Love make a difference in the lives of many people. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

Image Editing
Description: A personally taken photograph that has been edited/formatted using Photoshop. Date: 10/19/13 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 04, Julie Petersen Progam(s)/Tools: Sony Cyber-shot Camera, Adobe Photoshop Objectives: Learn basic photography skills. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Size and crop the image. 6x6 resolution 150 Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. Desaturate the selected portion of the image. Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image. Process: I took this picture using my little Sony Cyber-shot camera. With it being the fall season, I wanted to capture its beauty by taking a Focus FG shot of this berry tree. I then took my image into Photoshop and cropped it to a 66 inch square. After that I selected the background using the quick selection tools, and applied the Diffuse Glow filter while also desaturating it. While still using the quick select tool I selected inverse and added some Hue to the berry in focus.

Montage
Description: This project focused on blending images together smoothly using masks in photoshop as well as applying filters, typography, and images in an appealing matter. Date: 10/25/13 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 04, Julie Petersen Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop Objectives: Learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. (Two or more images) Use filters. (Apply at least one) Apply appropriate typography. Choosing good quality images. (Note background should be at least 16501275 pixels) Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour choice) Unifying a piece with a consistent theme Process: I first started off by cropping the background image to 8.511. Next I selected my background image of Denali then placed my additional photo on top and added a mask. With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged brush, I painted away the hard image edges. I then went in with a larger black brush at 50% opacity and 50% flow. I blended the image into the background so it looks like he is melting into the scene. To finish things off I adjusted the saturation to the entire project, added a warming filter and added some type with two contrasting fonts.

Flyer
Description: I was asked to create a news layout that will be attractive and more inviting to read by applying design principles and using appropriate typography. I came up with this black & white promotional flier to promote a graduate leadership conference. Date: 10/3/13 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 04, Julie Petersen Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign Objectives: Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. Process: I started this project by creating a few sketches with a couple different layouts. Once I chose the sketch that had the best format, I used it as a guide to create the final product in Adobe InDesign. I used the Rectangle and Line tool to create dimension and contrast as well as added a few small grey boxes for some repetition. I also emphasized one word in my title to create a good focal point, left white space and kept my body copy at 10pt. I was given the image, logo, and content for this flier.

Event Ad
Description: A full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner. Date: 10/11/13 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 04, Julie Petersen Program(s)/Tools: Microsoft Word, Epson Scanner Objectives: Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design Insert and edit images in Word. Use text boxes for layout in Word. Process: I began my project by first scanning my image. I then went into Microsoft Word and exported the scanned picture there and used gradient and transparency on the photo to soften it and provide a better transition. I then I added a few grey rectangles and used the line tool to provide contrast. I chose one font for the event title and one for the body however played with the contrasting weights. I was surprised at how much I could do with the hidden design features of Microsoft Word. You can do a lot using this program and will come in handy since its frequently used.

Beach Walk

Stationary
Description: Design a new logo and stationery items. Furthermore, the stationery pieces should all have a similar look and feel. Date: 11/11/13 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 04, Julie Petersen Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator & InDesign Objectives: Use The basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign. Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use your previous designs. (Dont use photos or live trace in your new logo) Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use your new logo to design two stationery items with consistent design. (Photos are okay on stationery.) Letterhead: 8.5 x 11 (full-bleed optional, but trim only .125) Business card: 3.5 x 2 (print above center on a vertical page) Apply typography rules keeping small copy. Learning to keep thing simple by having watermarks and drop shadows light and white space. Applying contact information: Include name, address, phone, and email on each piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone #; No parentheses/ hyphens. Process: I first chose to make my business cards. I picked the company and from there I knew a basic theme I was wanting to go with. I wanted green and trees within the design. I also tried to get a bit creative and substituted the T in the company name Protect for a tree that had similar features. Afterwards I began my logo design. I created the logo using simple shapes in Adobe Illustrator. I also used the pathfinder tool to cut and combine these simple shapes. Once the logo was created, I opened a new two page InDesign document and placed my logo .AI file into this document. From there it was rather simple; I added a text box with all my information and made a few minor adjustments. Then I moved on to the letterhead. By now I got the hang of this process and was able to go through the same routine

Logos
Description: Three logo variations for the same company. Date: 11/1/13 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 04, Julie Petersen Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator Objectives: Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image (at least 3 new logos). Do not imitate existing logos or use your previous designs. Use only the tools of Illustrator. (No photos on logo page) Setting up a professional display for the company. Arrange three logos on an 8.5 x 11 vertical page / .5 margins and add the company name in simple type at the top of page. Getting feedback from outside sources. Ask ten people to select their favorite logo. Process: I really enjoyed creating this logo in Illustrator. I started of by creating my type. I messed around with create outlines to help manipulate the text into a creative logo. I then used the pen tool to create a heart shape, house, and arrow to add to the typography. I made sure to choose fonts from contrasting categories to capitalize on the contrast. I also tried getting some more contrast by changing the sizes of the words.

Web Page
Description: A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo. Date: 10/6/13 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 04, Julie Petersen Program(s)/Tools: TextWrangler & Photoshop Objectives: Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. (Use TextWrangler Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file. Process: I created this web page using only TextWrangler. I had never seen or written any HTML/CSS. It was interesting to see how you could make a web page by only using a simple text editor. It was also interesting to use the http://www.W3.org HTML validator. It was useful to have something check to see if I had any problems with my code. After I marked up all my content and inserted my image, I attached a pre-made CSS document to my HTML. I then used the colors from my logo as the colors for my web page. I found these colors by opening Photoshop and using the eyedropper tool. I also changed my fonts to Times New Roman and Verdana. I declared some backup fonts just in case the viewers browser didnt have these fonts. I also used padding around the logo and text so that they would not be too close to the edge of the web page. This was one of the most challenging parts of working with CSS.
