Car battery charger

Description. Given below, is a very simple circuit that can be used for charging car batteries. In this circuit there is facility for monitoring the charging current and voltage. The circuit is based on the IC MC78T !"#T from $reescale. The IC is nothing but a 78 ! in T%&' pac(age with '" capacity. The transformer T steps down the mains voltage and diodes ) *)! does the +ob of rectification. Capacitor C does the filtering and C! acts as a decoupling capacitor. The ground terminal of IC is lifted to !. , using the diodes )' , )- and ). . /o the output from the IC will be a regulated -. , 0 !1!. 2.The battery is charged via diode )3.The )3 bloc(s reverse flow of current from battery to charging circuit when the mains power is not available. Meter M shows the charging current and M! shows the charging voltage. Circuit diagram with Parts list.

Notes.

The transformer T can be a !'4, primary5 .&4& .,, '" secondary step down transformer. The meter M can be a '" $/) ammeter. Meter M! can be a !4, $/) volt meter. $use $ can be a " fuse.
