Analyse of Art Works

Golconda, 1953 by Rene Magritte My first impression of this piece of art is impressed, I also like it, it makes me feel inspired because it shows the different ideas and creativity of different artists and it reminds me of how people dressed before and Charlie Chaplin. In this art work you can see a clear blue at the edges of the painting with a slightly dark blue on the middle, also on the background there are houses close together with red rooftops, chimneys, thin and long windows with white frames and with a base of a dark cream colour and over the sky and the houses you can see many men dressed in an old fashion way with dark brown coats and trousers, an umbrella and a bowler hats all over the painting each one with different profiles of their body. The artist uses an intermediate colour palette between lights and dark, the colours are weak and most of them are tertiary colours, the colour that is most used in this piece of art work is the colour brown in different tones, the colour that is used least is the colour red, the colours are arranged in different places, for example the colour brown that is used to create the clothing of the men is spread all over the painting because of the position of the men, the red, cream and the white colours that make the houses, are arranged at the bottom of the painting and on the right side to create a image of a closer house and the light blue is placed as the sky in the painting as well as the darker blue on the middle. Lastly the colours have not been applied flat they have been mixed with other colours to create different tones and a complementary blending. There is a use of light and shadow on this painting that is showed from were the light is coming from that for me is from the direction the artist is painting, you can see the use of shadow on the colours on the background to create depth as well as on the shadows of the men and the use of light on the house on the right border of the painting. The painting is not realistic, however the buildings on the background are realistically modelled on some areas like the roofs and the tonal range on the painting is narrow. The use of medium the artist has used looks like oil painting and it looks like the paint has been applied softly, I can tell because of the appearance of a soft surface. You cant really see the brush strokes and because it was painted the brush the artist used I think would be a thin brush and it was painted slowly and painstakingly, this makes me think that the artist is patient and has a steady hand.

The artist on the composition of this painting uses similar shapes like squares, rectangles and curves to create the image of the men. The shapes are spread evenly across the art work on different areas of the paintings and the shapes are repeated. The whole composition of the painting looks still and peaceful, the artist created this stillness by making the men on the painting appear floating. The centre of interest on the composition is the men, the artist draws your attention to it by creating the illusion that the men are floating. What the artist wants you to feel when you look at the painting is the feeling of unreal and it makes you feel thoughtful. The mood of these painting is neutral, the artist creates these mood by using the similar tone in the weak colours. In my opinion what I think the artist is trying to say in this artwork is that everything can look normal but it can be different. What I think the main theme of the painting is raining men or floating men because the men have umbrellas on their hands. If I was inside this artwork would be feeling calm because I would be on mid air and the colours arent so strong. This piece of art work isnt a religious art work and it doesnt have narrative. The painting is abstract because the idea of men floating isnt realistic and I would explain the artwork to someone by telling them its an abstract piece with neutral colours and the theme is floating men. Rene Magritte has created a very creative abstract painting with a calm atmosphere and with a feeling of unrealism by repeating the image of a man through out the painting.
