Manual for Training Students in OR Summary:

OR department at King Fahad Medical Military Complex (KFMMC) doesn't have a training and manual that help new training students who want to learn most important techniques and surgical procedure in the OR. Obviously, many new training students face difficulties when they enter the OR for the first time because of lack of knowledge. Moreover, OR staff are too busy, so the training students do not get the full benefit from the training period. In this manual, most important OR techniques and how to assemble some surgical tools will be covered. Also, this manual will be with easy language in order to make it easy for reading, especially for students who dont like to read complicated manuals. The rough draft will be finished by 21st of November. All cost including the labor, supplies and materials will be around 102,100 SR. If anyone is satisfied with the rough draft, the final draft will be on 15th of December.

Current Problems in OR Department:

OR department at ( KFMMC ) receives 10 training students every 3 months, so each student should spend 3 month in the OR. Usually, they spend 8 hours every day. Three months in OR are usually enough time to learn the primary rules and procedures. During this period of time some important OR duties are required to be learned by training students. For example, they are supposed to know how to do scrubbing and how to maintain the sterilization. Also, they should know the basic surgical instruments names and surgical suture classifications. In the first two weeks, training students should be able to scrub with registered scrub nurse in some minor surgical procedures. After one month, they should be able to do scrubbing alone as a first surgeon assistant in minor surgical procedures. In the last month, they should do scrubbing with registered scrub nurse in some major surgical procedures. In addition, training students are supposed to check patients' investigation test before the patient getting to OR. However, in reality, most students couldnt learn even the basic techniques. Most of them refer this problem to OR staff who dont give them the opportunity and the time to learn. On the other side, OR staff are complaining from the training students because the interrupt their work in the department. Many of wrong practices are done in the OR by training students. For example, students often don't have an idea about sterile technique, so they always break the sterility which might cause a serious problem for the patient, such as high possibility of having serious types of infection. The other example is that many students do not care about how to handle the surgical instruments and as known some of the surgical instruments are very sharp, so inappropriate handling and usage of those instruments might cause a serious injury for them or for other staff, especially if the instruments are contaminated.
