REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS Students who register for this programme should possess a National Senior Certicate or equivalent qualication or have proven quality related job experience. Candidates who do not have a National Senior Certicate are advised to rst register and complete the six-month Basics of TQM course (7181-1) of which details are available on request. FEE PER CANDIDATE The all-inclusive fee (no VAT - value added tax - is payable) per candidate is ZAR 7950.00 This includes a study package (study material comprises study guides, tutorial letters, et cetera) and examination fees (excluding supplementary examination fees in the event of this being necessary). Full payment is required in order to become an active student and receive your whole study package. Only in exceptional cases and with the prior approval of the Programme Leader (ie conrmed purchase order from your employer or other special arrangement) can registration proceed without payment in full. For students who have already completed a course or module of which the contents are similar to that of PTQM04M and that was presented by an SAATCA (South African Auditors Training Certication Association) accredited course provider, an application may be submitted for a RPL credit and if approved, exemption from this module will be given. INTRODUCTION The national quality policy focuses on the quality of a product, service quality of the organisation and quality of work life (QWL). This certicate programme provides the fundamentals for the above which includes QWL issues encompassing environmental and occupational health aspects, integrated SHEQ management as well as risk management. Total Quality Management (TQM) is a strategic necessity. I t can have a denite positive effect on savings on the input costs of a business. This is why many businesses believe quality is free. Besides cost-route benets, TQM also creates many market-route benets. Suitably trained personnel are a prerequisite and, in pursuit of this objective, the Centre for Business Management, in conjunction with the business sector, has developed a TQM programme to provide training for those businesses and their employees concerned with quality.

This popular programme offers a comprehensive package (technical and human aspects are both included) that covers the full range of quality concepts. The dynamic nature of business management and the correlation between quality practices and corporate performance require that the total spectrum of quality improvement concepts be included. These concepts are SPC, QA, JIT, QWL, TPM, KAIZEN, QFD, SHEQ Management and many more. The programme is endorsed by SASQ (South African Society for Quality). This programme is one of Unisas Centre for Business Managements most popular non-formal tuition offerings in business and operations management WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT AND WHO SHOULD ENROLL FOR THE PROGRAMME? Students will be introduced and exposed to a culture and a value system that proclaims quality. If people are cultivated to accept fear, barriers and bad quality in terms of cheap inadequate products, poor tools, waste, damage, incidents, diseases, defects, rework, weak maintenance, low reliability, weak responsiveness, no access, low enthusiasm, lack of courtesy and so forth, then they will also accept the status quo of bad quality and low quality of life. RISK MANAGEMENT BASED ON THE NEW ISO 31 0000 STANDARD ISO 31 000: 2009 provides principles and generic guidelines on risk management ISO 31 000: 2009 can be for any public, private or community enterprise, association, group or individual. Therefore, ISO 31 000:2009 is not specic to any industry or sector. ISO 31 000:2009 can be applied throughout the life of an organisation, and to wide range of activities, including strategies and decisions, operations, processes, functions, projects, products, services and assets. ISO 31 000:2009 can be applied to any type of risk, whatever its nature, whether having positive or negative consequences. THE ODL-OPEN DISTANCE LEARNING METHOD The UNISA tried and tested ODL method of tuition is followed in this programme. The method is based on selflearning and uses a complete study package to impart knowledge and assist students to learn application skills in the particular eld or discipline. The study package comprises a textbook (to be purchased by student) and a study guide for each of the four modules and a number of tutorial letters (201s) containing details of the assignments and feedback on the assignments.

UNISA TQM PROGRAMME = 48 CREDITS This short learning programme is designed according to the criteria for short courses and skills programmes. The programme is unit standard based which means the outcomes of learning per module (with topics) equals a unit with 12 credits (this equals 120 notional hours). This TQM programme is NQF ( National Qualications Framework) level 6. ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION Students will be evaluated in each of the four modules by means of both assignments (formative assessment) and a formal written examination (summative assessment). Formative Assessment: For the purposes of the formative assessment, one assignment per module are set of which the students must complete (compulsory assignments) before or on the due date. The compulsory assignments are formally assessed by the lecturer and/or his/her appointed external marker. Note: the compulsory assignments provide the student with the opportunity to obtain a year mark which will be used in the calculation of his/her nal mark. Summative Assessment: For the purposes of the summative assessment, one two-hour examination counting 70 marks must be written in January/February for each of the four modules. The examination will primarily consist of essay-type questions. Should the need arise, supplementary examinations will be written in May/June.
