Jenn Pincher September 30, 2013 Susan Lago Essay Two: Draft Two Technology in Society Society today is most definitely different from the society that we once knew forty years ago. Finding a job was no trouble, and having a college education was treated as a commodity, not a necessity. Becoming more technically advanced, we seem to have become more of a fast paced society. From the growing and collapsing of companies, to the constant changing of jobs, everything seems to be much quicker than before. Technology must have played a major role in the frequency of different jobs. We as a whole have become obsessed with our electronics, and ever since having the luxury of the computer, the way we operate has changed. We now have machines that work a 24/7 work week, replacing human employees and that also, do not require a salary. The way we work, and operate business has changed dramatically. This relation between technology and the alteration of our work force is obvious. As technology grows, the faster our society functions and changes, making the environment in which we live a difficult place for people to adapt and also, maintain a career. Companies expand and fail at a remarkably fast rate and job changing here (explain, connection for next paragraph)

Learning to adapt to an endlessly evolving workplace has become an apparent struggle. People are having difficulty keeping up with the pace of society, and that is most definitely not stopping soon. We have become a society of devices. From cell phones, to laptops, having the skills needed to operate basic machines in todays world is a requirement. Almost every career

includes some type of electronic device, and having the ability to use them well will reward you in the long run. After interviewing several people who have worked years out in their field, I was shocked to hear how similar their answers were. Most of them believed that adapting to our constantly changing society is a struggle, do to our increasing fixation on technology. We are always coming out with the next best thing, Jeff says, Its almost as if we dont have time to get used to one device, before we move on to the next; its difficult for us fifty year olds. And its true. Not only are our cell phones, and computers under the effect of constant change, but companies are adjusting the way they exert their employees. I have had to learn to use new machines with technology I have never seen before, Jeff continues, its changing the way I have been working, and I have been working at the same company for almost thirty years!. Both Sennett and Carnevales readings provide excellent examples of the troubles in the workplace. (quote from reading here)(Sennett). Although Sennett uses a real life connection to explain his point of view, Carnevales reading provides facts, statistics, and charts, about certain kinds of careers and how the impact of unemployment can affect a persons ability to both find and keep a job. (more explaining) I found that the fields that include an abundance of technology, like computer science, have a low unemployment rate. (explanation)

Being a full time college student in the field of graphic design, just thinking about the struggles people encounter when searching for a job, frightens me. It makes me wonder if I have made the right choice in going with a career that will bring me joy, and not necessarily the best of luck when it comes to a salary and job searching. But given that I have already spent two years studying accounting, only to reward me with constant migraines and torn hair, I have chose

to go down a path that I am going to enjoy and gain the technical skills needed to strengthen my knowledge not only in my field, but (Art teacher interview here)

Current day finding and keeping a career seems to be more difficult than it used to. Back then, a person was able to keep a job for the majority of his/her lifetime. Now it is estimated that a person changes their job over four times in twelve years. In both Sennetts and Carnevales readings, they extenuate the troubles of younger generations and their ability to either get or keep a job. The truth is, as generations move into college, people are not only pressured to do well in their classes, but encouraged to choose a career path that has a low unemployment rate. It is quite evident that people who pick an area of study suffering from the strain of high unemployment, tend to have difficulty in finding a job that fits their degree. This makes it more difficult for people to find a field of interest that they would be interested in pursuing, making it harder for younger generations to be motivated enough to do well and also be excited about the work they do. Although the pressures of college can be overwhelming, the cause of the troubles in the workplace has yet to be answered. Why is the unemployment rate in fields, such as __ so low, and is society so different, that we now feel the need to consistently switch jobs throughout our working life? Some may believe that society has become more of an opportunist game, meaning that when a person has an opportunity given to them they do not hesitate, however, judging by the results of my interviews, there seems to be an ongoing similarity between answers; which is technology. The underlying cause of the issues addressed in college life and the workplace is rapidly changing technology. The expansion of technology constantly changes society and the environment we live in which makes it difficult for a person to adapt.

Society is fast placed. We as a whole need to learn to adapt, and take the necessary prerequisites to prepare for the future. Technology will continue to grow, and in the meantime certain career choices will become unnecessary. If I have learned anything from interviewing people involved in the workplace, it is that we need to evolve at the pace of technology. Its hard to imagine a career without electronics now a days, so any type of technical knowledge, whether it be with the computer or the internet, should only benefit someone not only in their career, but life. However, I'm hopeful that as our knowledge expands, it will produce more jobs and open up positions that weren't there before, solving our ongoing issue of jobs in our society. (stronger conclusion)
