HEALTH AND SAFETY BOOKLET Teachers Notes This health and safety booklet is designed to help the pupils and students gain knowledge and understanding about workshop safety and safe working practices in a practical environment. The contents of the booklet are to make the student aware of classroom/workshop rules, good practice and safety signs and symbols. The classroom rules may change from school to school (teachers and lecturers may want to change or add to these) but the basic workshop rules are shown. A series of drawings showing good and bad practices in the practical area can be highlighted during lessons with the students and comments made under each picture. The section on safety signs and symbols will help the student recognise standard national signs that are not just used in the school workshop but in shops, factories and in other industrial units. Teachers/lecturers may want to hand out the booklet as a complete unit or as individual worksheets. This is at the discretion of the individual teacher. Teacher/lecturers are encouraged to add more information and worksheets, as they are required.

Safety Signs and Symbols The signs and symbols shown should be known to the student and examples should be seen in the practical workshop area. The aims of having these signs in the area is to remind the students and staff about health and safety and safe working practices in the practical environment. The signs have been left in black and white so that the student can enhance the signs with the correct colour coding. The space left beside each picture is for the student to fill in. (A worksheet is also provided with statements already included). The worksheets should be used throughout the practical work either reinforcing previous learning learning or introducing new and relevant signs to the pupils. Tasks that could be attempted using these worksheets could include: Making signs for practical rooms (laminating them when complete) Making signs for other departments within the school or college. The teacher/lecturers are encouraged to add more information to this booklet.
The signs and symbols following have been reproduced with the kind permissions of Rivington Designs Limited, PO BOX 171, Bolton, BL7 9BF from whom a package Images for Industry is available.

Fire Extinguishers In the case of fire in the workshop, students and staff should be aware where the fire extinguishers are and what type of extinguisher is available. This worksheet shows similarly shaped extinguishers, but all are used for different types of fire. They should be colour coded and should show in what circumstances they should be used.
