APES- Article Summary & Discussion Preparation Log Part I: Individual Assignment Article Title: Conservation for the

People Author/Source: Peter Kareiva and Michelle Marvier

A: List the major ideas, concepts or key points- point by point: Public sees nature-versus-people creates hot-spots strategy 30% of Americans have heard of biodiversity Least diverse regions have important seasonal, migratory stops, and nesting sites United Nations created study of ecosystem services Human health is also threatened when ecosystems and natural cycles are gone Conserving wetlands and forests reduce deaths We should save as much as possible because rare species today can become abundant Protect areas that provide the most ecosystem services to people Financial experts and ecologists will most probably need to collaborate for conservation Conservation will only become truly global and widely supported when people are central to its mission.

B: Summarize the AUTHORs main point or idea- at LEAST 1-2 paragraphs Many conservationists base their conservation efforts on the benefit of the richness and diversity. This causes many of the public to look the other away because it does not directly affect them in some cases. Many people have pity for the environment but do not truly help because it will be seen as nature vs. human. The authors of the article choose to approach conservation in a different way with the view of ecosystem services. With the public and conservation groups to know about the benefit of ecosystem services there will be an increase of support for conservation. C: Write a reaction paragraph to the article stating your own thoughts on the topic, using specific citations from the article to support your views: This article was very different from what I expected. I expected it to repeat how the environment is full of richness and life so we should preserve. I agree and believe in that idea but I know many would not care too much about it. This approach of ecosystem directly benefitting the people facing problems with poverty and unclean water will have positive feedback. With the public knowing that there is not a human vs. nature conflict, they are most likely to help and agree with the conservation strategy.

So What? It is important to know about the benefits of ecosystems services.
