The NC Design & Prototyping Co-Op is a professional network of service providers driving eco-
nomic growth in North Carolina’s technology and manufacturing communities. The Co-Op mem-
bership reflects a wide spectrum of expert practitioners involved in the conceptualization, design,
development, production and marketing of innovative products and technologies for multiple

1) Professional network of service providers. The Co-Op provides an opportunity for peers to
easily find pre-qualified providers with the resources necessary for the completion of client proj-
ects. Companies looking for qualified, professional design and prototyping providers to design
and produce a product can find who and what they need within the Co-Op membership without
the need to engage a large, expensive corporation with similar options all under one roof.

2) Social networking and educational opportunities. Through multiple professionally-man-

aged Co-Op activities, members interact with one another; share leads, resources, and technologi-
cal innovations; build essential working relationships; and, find a welcoming support network of
peers who can provide encouragement and advice when needed. Activities include lunch-and-
learns, committee meetings and participation in the RTP Product Design Street Faire. Interaction
between vendors on a personal and professional level is key for the development of an effective,
local, trust-based network.

3) Exposure to potential clients. The Co-Op is dedicated to building its brand within the mar-
ketplace as a valuable resource for established, new, and relocating North Carolina companies
looking for quality local product design services. Utilizing traditional and innovative communica-
tion tools and methodologies, the Co-Op is actively engaging in proactive public relations and
marketing activities to raise its profile locally, statewide, nationally and globally so that businesses

4) Driving economic growth. Through its ongoing activities and supporting publicity, the Co-

Al Ely ADR HYDROCUT

Al is President of ADR Hydro Cut,
Inc., a water-jet cutting shop lo-
cated on International Drive in
Morrisville. He has over 34 years
experience as a business owner in
a wide variety of markets and in-
dustries. His drive and motivation
comes from the desire to help cus-
tomers solve a problem and com-
plete a project that is particularly
challenging. His personal interests
are also wide spanning, from 56-
year-old cars to spending as much
time on the water as possible, es-
pecially in the Bahamas. He is also
a Founding Member of the RTP
Product Development Guild with
the function of membership chair.
Al served in the U.S. Navy aboard
River Patrol Boats, (“PBRs”) on the
rivers of South Vietnam, and then
aboard a guided missile destroyer
sailing from California. He grew
up in New Jersey but has lived in
Vermont, Colorado, California, New
Mexico, New Hampshire, Maine
[aboard his sailboat] and last but
not least, North Carolina.
ADR Hydro Cut, Inc. is located on International Drive in Morrisville,
NC a convenient location to just about anywhere in the Triangle.
ADR was founded in 1998 by Al Ely and Ron Harris. ADR is a wa-
ter-jet cutting shop where they cut parts and solve problems.
In the beginning, Al and Ron made a decision to only cut parts
and offer no other services. “We wanted to do work for as many
fabrication shops in the region and knew we did not want to be-
come their competition, so we market ourselves as being an off
site cutting resource for all of our customers.” ADR stocks a wide
variety of materials and can track down just about any type of
material that customers need to have cut.
Cutting parts with water means there is no heat introduced into
the cutting process and very thick (6”) material is not a problem.
So far there are only three things that are resistant to cutting and
they are the tiles from the bottom of the space shuttle, safety
glass, and some laminates. ADR has cut parts for customers from
all over the globe. Al Ely says “I do not know how some of our cus-
tomers find us, but find us they do, and usually from references.”
Al and Ron have an artistic background, so they have a tendency
to think outside of the box in relation to accomplishing difficult
tasks.
